Wheel width help.

Featured Replies

For a bit of a change around here, I'm looking at changing the wheels on my vRS.

Has anyone fitted anything bigger than a 8.5j rim on a Mk2? The set I've been looking at have got a 9.5j wider rear wheel option, but would thing this would be waaay too wide with an offset of ET42.

If anyone could help it would be muchly appreciated!

Anyone had anything wider than standard on there?

215/40/17 tyres work pretty well on a vRS.

How wide do you want to go with your tyres on the wheels you want to fit?

Is it for the look?

I think depending on your suspension you could go 8 x 17 et40 with 215/40R 17

or

8 x 18 & et 33 - et 35 with 215/35R 18

This is what is fitted to some A1's i believe.

Here is a thread on Mk1 Superb forum showing exactly what happens if you overdo wheel/tyre width without addressing/correctly adjusting the offset.

Worn insides of every tyre on the car and messed up handling, to sum it up.

Ive got Weitec Hicon coilovers on and am just looking at upgrading the wheels for some 18's.

Main issue is whether the 9.5j width wheels would fit without having to modify the arches, or if 8.5j is the limit.

I would probably go for using 215/35/18 tyres, possibly 225/40/18 on the rears if the 9.5j fits.

Pictures pinched from other Members cars & sections in the vRS Pic thread or Projects.

215 / 225 tyre width is not extreme, the problem is you are trying to put them on very wide rims, in fact your 9.5in rims are wider than the tyres you plan on using and that says something, 7.5J rim is already enough for 225 tyres. To fit rims 9.5in wide, people put spacers. Spacers make the rim fit, but move center position even further outwards and mess up camber in more ways than one.

If you want them just for looks, they probably will fit, with 10mm-20mm spacers at worst, just don't expect good handling or even tyre wear across the thread. Though I'd look for 7.5J-8J 18in rims instead.

Have you got pictures of tyre wear?

Personally i would not be caring about tyre wear because the only reason i would have rear wheels fitted that wide would be slicks on a highly modified set up.

I think on a standard set up, even the coils the handling will be gash.

Is it for Track or Micky D's cruising you want these wide wheels on?

Easy enough to flare arches if you must have wide rear wheels/tyres.

If you have the rear weights off and a light back end i do not fancy the handling.

George could you please tell me where you got those progress pics of the S2000?

'google images'.

keywords something like.

skoda fabia mk2 rally car

skoda fabia mk2 wide kit

or

fabia mk2 wide arches,

fabia stretched tyres, or similar

EDIT.

fabia mk2 s2000 , on 'google images'

* a very nice black car on the second line, i like very much.*

I've got 225/45/17 on 7.5j rims. Need atleast a 15mm spacer on the front 20mm on the back and they still rub without Modding the arches.

I wouldn't be too fussed regarding tyre wear, I know that as soon as you start altering suspension and wheels your never going to get it perfect. Its more for everyday use, I very much doubt the Fabia will be seeing a track, as nippy as the car is, I will be using a different car for track use.

Think the widest so far out of those wheels is possibly 8j so maybe combining 8.5j with spacers or low offset wheels should help, I'll leave the S2000 kit for somebody else to do to their own car.

got 8x18 ET 32 with 10mm spacers fited allmost without problems .
