What are they like to own? What is the insurance group for the 1.8 vvc model, mpg and whats the finish like?

I distinctly remember a certain motoring programme pondering the wisdom of buying an MG now.....

The verdict on the TF was far from favourable.

Steer well clear was the general drift.

My boss used to have one, and I used it for a while when I was working in the sales team.

They're not that quick, drink fuel if pushed, the driving position is awful, the seats are uncomfortable, the suspension's too soft, the engine sounds rough as guts and has no appreciable torque whatsoever, the steering's too vague, the visibility with the roof up is dreadful, they eat rear tyres, the dashboard is dated, they're badly put together, and frankly if I had to have an accident I'd rather have it on a skateboard. Oh, and the roof leaked. All of this on a car under two years old with less than 20K on the clock.

Apart from that, it was great. Nice enough at fifty on a backroad with the sun shining, but crap every other moment.

Buy an MX-5.

OOOOOOHHHHHH

You didn't like it, then? :P

They have a little problem with head gaskets apparently, but apart from that people that have them seem to like them. I don't think they're really a sports car, but you pays yer money ....

buy an MX5 or Z3

135 bhp group 12,160 bhp group 16.

Never heard a good word about one I'm afraid.Helped a neighbour push her broken down one back onto her drive but never actually driven one.

Far,far too many better cars out there. As said above,z3 going for a pittance at the moment.MX5 great car.I even like the fiat barchetta....a lot!!

Barchetta is nice...if not too much like a loaf.

MG TF...umm erm no. Well not for me anyway. Seen a few in odd places, but never seen one used in anger (except the remains of one in the middle of a a sweeper into Settle).

I'd look at a mx5 (import or not) or *holds desk* z3.

*holds desk* z3.

 Should mention the one I had a spin in was not quick ( Z3,think it was a 1.9 petrol  ) but they should be a better investment than the TF (the BM's gearknob did come off in my hand though when selecting reverse....oops  )

IF you must go for one I've heard the 1.8 MPi engine is the best one to go for. Much more tunable (can add a supercharger  ) than the VVC, lower insurance and better fuel consumption.

Having driven the MGF and the MGTF I'd say that the MGF is a nicer drive - feels better balanced and not such a hard ride.

The good thing about them is the number of aftermarket bits available from Mike Satir and Brown & Gammons and the like
