DashCam (one for the brokers)

Featured Replies

Seeing as we have a few of the insurance brokers on here.............

DashCams:

1) What do insurance companies make of them? Do they accept footage as part of the incident statement?

2) If it's hard-wired in to come on when the ignition comes on, is it considered a modification?

One of the new sponsors is a camera provider and claims on their website that you can get an insurance discount for having the camera fitted, but no details of how to get it. Would be nice to get a formal response on that as well.

One of the new sponsors is a camera provider and claims on their website that you can get an insurance discount for having the camera fitted,

I have a feeling that the insurance companies will cotton-on to the idea and say "you can have a discount, but only if you have our preferred camera, fitted by our preferred installers, at a vastly inflated price). ;) ;)

The words "can get" and "up to" spring to mind.

That doesn't actually mean you'll get a penny off.

But aside from that I've had two accidents where I had a camera fitted.

In both cases it resulted in the claim being settled quickly and in my favour as not at fault.

I just put the footage on YouTube and sent the other solicitors a link when they started asking for info to see who was at fault.

We have a deal with Adrian Flux where any of our cameras offer a discount. If you mention you have a SmartCamDirect camera and which model installed you will get the discount, nice and simple :) It doesn't need to be professionally installed just mounted and plugged in.

We also provide a camera which provides a discount with Westminster commercial insurance which can cover fleets etc and offer a substantial saving.

When i bought my RoadHawk & had it fitted 12 months ag othe only insurance that would do an additional discount was Westminster, but was advised that this was on Commercial vehicles only.

Whilst it is no consolation that i get nothing extra for having cameras fitted, it does give me peace of mind that if when a tosser inconsiderate car driver does hit me there can be no arguement. & will hopefully get a quick settlement as above.

I really dont understand why , if Insurance companies are serious about reducing false claims, that they dont give the sensible motorist with the in car cameras some sort of insurance reduction, or are they showing the true colours of being greedy money grabbers ?

It's because (In my experience) insurance companies only allow a certain amount of discount.

They have all sorts of promotions like Drive Recorders, forum discounts, car club discounts etc... but it's all just a bit of a game really.

But then I am sceptical of vehicle insurance as I pay out an absolute fortune every year. :(

Who do you use for fleet insurance? we may have some contacts who could help you out

I'll PM you.

I've tried most of them out there for the fleet (I was talking about private insurance above) as it's a bit specialised and only about eight underwriters will touch it.

Paying £160k...

Interesting how there's no response from any of The Brokers on this, especially around "it is a mod" question. Maybe they're in hibernation, only popping out to tell us about some "great deal" that's at the wrong time of the year for most of us.

So, after two weeks, not one of the brokers on here has anything to say on this? Speaks volumes in itself.

Am looking to insure The Fun again soon, guess I have a list of "helpful" companies I won't be phoning.

if they do give discount, what is in the small print?

if you drive with camera off is the insurance void?

I have the experience with insurance companies that is works something like this:

You have the obligation to say everything. Anything you do say will be used against you on your quote.

I have never, ever in my life notified of a change or modification to my policy and had them reduce my premium. It either stays the same or goes up. You add winter tyres, it stays the same or goes up. Someone here wanted to add locking wheel nuts and premium went up. I would not at all be surprised to hear that someone notified of a dashcam and had the premium increased. I did try Adrian Flux with their dashcam bonus, but it turned out to be £0.00.

That was me. :(

Apparently the rationale was that: fitting locking nuts meant I *must have* fitted alloys where there were no alloys before. It was beyond their comprehension that alloys could have been factory fitted without locking nuts.

Sorry but :giggle:

Who was the insurer?

Thanks

It was a specialist commercial insurer based in Wimbledon. (It was a couple of years ago.)

Interestingly Sky Insurance declined to quote for insuring The Fun at all.

Hi,

we prefer performance or modified vehicles.

Thanks

It's interesting that after all this time no insurance brokers have responded to the original question, yet as soon as one was mentioned they appear (and still didn't address the question).

It appears that Sky don't know what they will/won't insure, and I suspect that the others are actually too scared to venture an opinion.

Well there is a thread on here where an insurer who has a logo showing a 15% camera against a certain brand of camera, declined to give that discount to a member on here who has one fitted.

....not you guys then? :giggle: :giggle:

:wonder: - I'm not sure what our successful Van insurance scheme has got to do with the price of fish?

We have schemes for modified cars, imports, prestige, high performance and vans. The 'fun' doesn't fit any of these schemes.

Cheers

Ollie

1) What do insurance companies make of them? Do they accept footage as part of the incident statement?

Yes, you can send the footage through, whether you spin off the road when driving too fast or whether you are involved in a cash for claim scam. I can only see footage being provided for the latter.

2) If it's hard-wired in to come on when the ignition comes on, is it considered a modification?

Sure is.

It's interesting that after all this time no insurance brokers have responded to the original question, yet as soon as one was mentioned they appear (and still didn't address the question).

Interesting indeed, easily explained though.

I look after over 200 UK based car clubs and communities, amongst other things. This keeps me very busy. I simply do not have time in the day to be answering general insurance related questions but will do if I am able. I cannot speak for the other insurers on here.

In this case, my search of the forum brought up this:

Interestingly Sky Insurance declined to quote for insuring The Fun at all.

Which is what I replied to and didn't read any of the rest of the thread.

Thanks

Ollie

So it seems, but it took 20 minutes after "yes we can definitely quote for one of those" to find that out.

So if it's not a modified, nor import, prestige, high performance or a van/commercial vehicle, what is it?
