with skoda center caps ??

that is going through my mind, but does the car need bigger alloys than 16"

If they will fit, I'd put the skoda ones in. The Monte Carlos fill the wheel arches by a deceptively greater amount than you'd expect 17s to do.

Monte’s for summer and the greenline (with winter tyres) for the winter…. or sell me the greenline wheels for my winters :giggle:

(especially as we both have quoted the legend)

that's as good a reason as any  !!!!, but shipping from ireland would be mental

I know

I don’t actually need them either but I do really like the Greenline wheels

My Superb Elegance 2.0 TDi 170CR has 18" wheels as standard, with 225x40x18 tyres. For the winter I've fitted 16" wheels with appropriately sized tyres that give a similar rolling circumference. The car rides better, is a lot more comfortable, copes better with Herefordshire's potholes and delivers a 10% improvement in fuel consumption, while handling is unimpaired. I now want to stick with the 16" wheels for the summer, but wonder if that is permissible. Other Superb models have 16" wheels, so they will certainly fit, but they are not standard for cars with my spec.

It depends on the legislative where you live. However in general, allowed wheels are in COC document coming with the car. You can switch among them flawlessly (set of them), all wheels at COC are permited without any other state authorization.

?????????

I too have been considering going down the 16" route. I bought my Superb partly because of the positive comments from fellow sufferers with spinal problems and good as the car is, the ride for me is let down by the 18" Thermisto wheels and 'rubber band' tyres.

I am seriously considering selling the Thermisto's/tyres and buying a set of 16" Cades Eros alloys which seem to have been fitted to the Audi TT at some point. I have checked with my insurer and all they are worried about is the cost of replacement so seem OK on that score. Does anyone have any experience with these Cades alloys or able to make any other recommendations? I would have liked a 16" version of the Thermisto's but they don't exist. I am also considering putting all weather tyres on them. Again any tips or experiences would be welcomed.

Thanks in anticipation,

Mike

you have COC document with the car. In that document you have allowed wheels in it, you don´t need to ask anyone even dealer or insurance company if they permit you to use them.

COC = Certificate of Compliance.

When you change alloy wheel size do you need the computer recaled by the main dealer?

Not if the rolling radius stays the same. So bigger wheels means smaller sidewalls. Basically 205/60/15 and 205/55/16 wheels and tyres have the same radius and so don't effect the speedo.

I am buying a second hand superb shortly, I suspect I wont have the (coc) certificate of compliance so can anyone tell me what it says.

the car is an elegance 170bhp L&k

The Skoda dealer has offered me a set of 17"alloys with winter tyres for £1300, does that seem a good option or should I just get some 16"steels and some nice wheel trims. (any wheel trim suggestions that look similar to the L&K wheels?

Thankyou Argee for explaining what the coc is..

£1300?? !!

wow you can get a new OE set of wheels and premium winter tyres for half that price.

Wow! Really? From the dealer?

I have Thermisto alloys on my Elegance. I would be interested to permanently trade for 16 inch 'sensibles' if they saved 10% fuel and were much cheaper to maintain in the future (without hitting looks too much)

So a couple of questions,

  1. have other people found 16inch sensible, winter type wheels and tyres give much better fuel economy? - if so how much?
  2. What is the going rate for a set of barely used Thermisto alloys (<1000 miles) + tyres?

Superb is a lovely car, anything that helps running costs would improve the car even more for me!

On my octavia I have done it somewhat backwards. I have 15" skoda wheels with summer tyres and 16" audi alloys with winter tyres. Both sets of tyres are 205 wide and the handling/ride seems to be the same and not seen a great difference in fuel economy.

Therefore I would expect to see a slightly softer ride if you just drop wheel size. Any change in width will probably make more of difference in terms of mpg.

With steel rims yes, it will be ~half the mentioned price. With proper OE alloys it wont and will be in the region of ~£1000-1100 (depends on the size of rim/tire)...

I went steels for winter route. For just a shy of £600 I got premium winter tires and steel rims. Very happy with such solution :giggle:

I paid £700 for a set of new (BBS) Audi alloys and winter tyres from a dealer.

Very nice! What size? What tires?

I'm guessing - a decent 16" (http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/dunlop/winter-sport-4d/205/55/R16/H/94/f?returnurl=%2forder%2ftyres%3f%26width%3d205%26profile%3d55%26rim%3d16%26speed%3dV%26wintertyre%3d1%26minpricerange%3d0%26maxpricerange%3d0%26loadratings%3d94%26customerrating%3d0%26displayall%3d999&tyre=32330283) (IMHO :giggle: ) costs ~£100+. 4x£100 = £400.

£300 for a set of nice BBS rims... you're either lucky one or got cheap winter tires, thus the low price. Plus try changing BBS to genuine VAG rims and you'll see the price going through the roof :).
