Cheap tuning box-performance figures

Featured Replies

The Dragon box is pretty good, and when combined with cupra intake & green filter it shouldnt cause that much more smoke. Without the cupra intake it will probably bellow out clouds of the stuff though ;)

I have used both analouge and digital dragon tuning boxes on the same car neither put the engine management light on and both were different.....the Analouge was a bit of an animal all or nothing did make my 130 pd octy easier to drive but as the power came in in one big burst the clutch didn't like it and used to slip in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th then I bought a Dragon Digital box totally different, much smoother but no less fun and enormous amounts of torque as a guide we have a road near us 30mph at the bottom of the hill so if you floor it at the bottom you can tell by your speed at the top how well the car pulls with a digital and an analouge tuning box my elegance estae 130 pd was doing exactly the same speed at the top as my octy Vrs does now  and to be honest was quicker at overtaking than my Vrs is. the Digital tuning box didn't produce any more smoke than normal but boy was it fun and I would advise that the digital route is probably the way to go on a budget although the analouge will do at a pinch for a while :D

I went out last night with a car full of fat barstewards for the first time since the tuning box was fitted.

I was amazed that having a car full of blokes made NO difference to the performance, it pulled like buggery and the only time I really noticed it was when I had to throw out the anchor.

Can I fit bigger brakes?

If you have a vRS then do a search for a thread on 312mm brakes from the Octy vRS. If you have a TDI, then you'll need to replace an awful lot to get better brakes as Jason will tell you! Best bet if you're on a budget is to look at better quality pads and fluid as a start, and maybe replace the discs with uprated items at a later date.... :D

Or go slower? .... nah!

A tuning box is safer for the car then a remap and can be removed easily as well.

So lower risk in that regard :)

Try an AMD One Click then tell me this is still correct.

Remap can be risky as flashing the ECU is not without risk' date=' plus the extra strain on the engine by increased boost and therefore temperatures cannot be ignored :)[/quote']

VW design engines to run alot higher power for example the 150bhp petrol is the same as the 180bhp apart from the 150bhp is running a lower boost pressure so adding another 30bhp isn't going to kill your car, tharshing from cold, grandprix traffic light starts and red lining your car will damage the engine eventually, anyway most people get rid of there cars after the warranty runs out which is more than enough time before it goes bang..

One click is easy - true :) - and there are others who have a similar system.

Problem is that reprogramming ECUs is not without risk of corruption - and that in turn can cause fun. In reality it is unlikely to go wrong as long as the connectors are working properly :)

Temperatures go up with a boost increase - that's why FMIC & Pikey was worth it ;)

I totally agree with what you're saying in principle, don't get me wrong :D

There will be more strain on the engine but we know the engine block can do more than stock without any trouble, unlike some other engines :D

UPDATE Had cheap tuning box on for 1 tankfull now.Just filled up and brimmed the tank, according to the trip computer I was getting 50mpg but working it out with a calculater the true figure was only 37mpg-terrible!

I am now going to run the car for a tankful without the box for a direct comparison. I think it will feel sluggish at first but I wont miss the smoke especially at low revs in a high gear....

My tuning box made very little difference to economy, but the increased torque is addictive :) and therefore worth every penny in my book.

Sounds to me like the smoke issue has a lot to do with driving style ... I've recently arrived into tdi-ville from the world of petrol (motorcycles and smarts), so I'm probably still using more revs than the rest of you.

Either that, or my twice daily snort up the M5 clears it out ... ?

I would have to agree with Hellfire (for once  ), I wouldnt spend

hellfire, do you think the dragon box is a decent buy.

Most things will void warranty. Even a PD160 air intake can void warranty.

But then most dealers will be more reasonable than that :)

I think as far a tuning boxes go it's the best out there, certainly in the UK and

i cant fault the box for performance and economy but still curious if theres another (safer) way of power increase without voiding the warranty.

An increase in power apart from things like cold air etc is going to void your warranty, it's black and white, leave your car standard and the warrany remains intack. Start messing around with tuning parts and Skoda can easily pull the warranty on your car with good reason.

cheers guys

Even the PD160 intake they were NOT allowed to fit at the dealer. Strut brace they would however fit as it was considered purely mechanical.

Odd but true. I'm surprised as that implies brake upgrades would be ok whereas I'm quite convinced warranty would be voided :)
