New Laurence & Kermit Yeti ordered.

Featured Replies

Just ordered a new L&K from Gordon Lamb in Derby to replace my SE 4x4 110 as the PCP is up this year. Can't wait to see how the 170bhp compares to the 110.

Opted for Rough Road Pack and spare Tyre in Steel Grey. Nearly bought the 12 speaker system too but decided 4 extras speaker for £390 wasn't worth it.

Should be due May/ June.

Was planning on keeping the rubber boot liner but am thinking it won't fit neatly with the raised floor? Has anyone tried that combo?

Also, I will have a 5 net system going spare as they too don't look like they will fit with the raised floor.

Anyway, just wanted to share my news!

Congrats on the deal, we ordered our L&K nearly 3 weeks ago now and just got a build date of week 15. Based on that I expect it to be at the dealer for around May time.

It's interesting that so many people are opting for the the CR 170 TDI, any particular reason?

We went for the CR 140 TDI DSG when we ordered although I would've specified the 170 if it had been available with DSG.

I've been so impressed with the DSG on my Fabia vRS that I just couldn't contemplate going back to a manual. It was never even a consideration in fact, to choose a manual gearbox.

I'm still torn between sticking with the 140 DSG combo or changing the order to a 170 manual though. Going from an Octavia vRS 170 TDI to a Yeti 140 TDI DSG may be a bit of a comedown, despite how impressed I've been with the DSG.

To be honest I didn't really consider the DSG. I've had lots of autos in the past but have never liked them when working off road so stuck with the manual. There isn't much difference in price between the 140DSG and 170stick so opted for the more BHP.

Blimey!!

Can you order colour matched tyres now?

I'll get my coat. :giggle:

Laurence & Kermit...

I think you meant:

Because Laurence & Kermit means something different:

I was never a fan of traditional auto boxes but the DSG is completely different in that it's an automated manual and works entirely differently to a standard auto.

It's one of those things you have to try for yourself, it can't be explained in words really.

I've always been a power freak when it comes to engines, particularly TDIs but since being introduced to the world of DSG, I've had to settle for 2nd best this time as there's no other choice of engines, save for the 1.2 TSI. Seemingly, the 140 TDI is the most powerful engine offered with a DSG box. Those Germans must not have figured a way yet to engineer a DSG box to handle the extra torque from anything more powerful than that.

Yes I know, but I can never remember the correct pronunciation & Laurence & Kermit sounds funnier too.

Llanigraham: Yes, wheels to match...! LOL

But there are DSG boxes in the VW group coping with more power/torque already. There is one in the Audi S5. They call them S-tronic but that is just Audi speak for DSG.

Keep the mat as it will fit OK as I have done it - you just need to trim a small piece from the 2 front corners.

So why aren't Skoda offering these boxes in their range then? Same goes for VW and Seat?

Also there are 2 types of DSG gearbox - the dry type (7 speed) and the wet type (6 speed.) All petrol engined cars seem to get the dry type whereas the diesels get the wet type.

I don't think I've seen a diesel engine in the VW group with an output higher than 140bhp that is also offered with a DSG gearbox. I've seen plenty of petrol engines e.g. my Fabia vRS that puts out 180bhp with a DSG box but these all seem to be the dry type due to less torque produced from the engine, despite higher bhp.

You'd have thought the engineers would have developed a stronger DSG box by now as it's been around for a good few years.

I would also like a 170 but I feel that DSG is a more important factor. I think that going from DSG to manual would be a bigger shock than going from 170 to 140, but that's only my opinion, of course.

I agree and that was the main factor in going DSG for the Yeti.

We did go for the 12 speaker upgrade by the way, having listened to the standard system and was disappointed. It's more than just 4 extra speakers, I believe you also get a pre-amp and uprated speakers all round.

I'm led to believe that the Columbus head unit also makes an appreciable difference to the standard Bolero unit.

Did you actually mean 'an output higher than 140bhp that is also offered with a 'dry' DSG gearbox'. IIRC there are a number of examples with the 6-speed DSG such as the Golf GTD (Mk 6 that is, think the Mk 7 version has yet to appear).

No I didn't - I've never seen a diesel engine with a dry DSG box, only the 6 speed wet box. I already own an example of an engine that produces more than 140bhp with a DSG box - my Fabia vRS. This, however, is a petrol engine that produces 180bhp and has the 7 speed DSG.

The dry 7 speed has a lower torque rating than the wet 6 speed box which is why only the petrol engines seem to get the dry 7 speed version.

Just had a look on VW's website - I stand corrected. The Golf GTD is offered with a 170bhp TDI with 6 speed DSG although this will be the 6 speed wet type. As I say, I've never seen a diesel engine with the 7 speed dry box in any output variant.

This still begs the question then, why can't Skoda at least offer the 170bhp TDI with the 6 speed DSG box as VW do?

Because VW and Audi would then looses sales to Skoda. This isn't a new thing tbh, deivetrain combinations have always been comparatively limited on the skodas.

Skoda are already taking chunks out of both companies anyway with their successes over the past few years.

If VAG were so bothered that Skoda might take more than their fair share of the group pie then why were they so keen to buy them out in the first place?

That's the problem with Skoda, they'll always be the poor relation.

We really should get this thread back on topic soon!

Sounds great, good choice. You will find the 170 a much nicer drive with plenty of go, power in reserve for a relaxed drive and better brakes. We had a 140 first and then moved to a 170 and it was a much better combination so the move from the 110 will be even more impressive.

The Golf offers the 1.6Tdi with 7speed DSG which I assumed was dry-clutch. FYI

It may well be, however, the latest torque uprated 7 speed DSG box is also a wet clutch.

This means that in future, it may no longer be possible to determine what type of gearbox has been mated to the engine by number of gears alone.

As regards the 1.6 TDI engine, I've no idea what the rating is for that so wouldn't like to guess which gearbox it uses.

After a bit of Googling, the latest 7 speed DSG box that can be found on VW's 177bhp TDI 4 motion combos has been around since 2010. Why then does Skoda still not offer it, even on their top of the range cars? I don't believe it's down to marketing alone surely?

I'm going to call it quits on the subject of DSG anyway as I've obviously reached the limits of my knowledge!

I would also have gone for the 170 if I could have opted for the DSG, you wait it will probably be an option with the facelift

I hope not, otherwise I'll be a little miffed!

A couple of us on here also wanted a CR170 & DSG.

That is now what we have.

Ah... but does it also have 4x4? :p

Yes. He means its a 140 DSG with a remap so not an actual 170. ;-)

Hello.

Based on this and some other research I have spoken to the dealer today to add the 12 speaker system onto my order. Now I realise its more than just a few extra speakers the price makes more sense.

Oh, and whilst we were at this, Wifey has ordered a new Citigo too!
