1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures

Featured Replies

Well after nearly a month of Skoda (not customer services fault) processing my claim I have had a good will contribution of 4500 pounds in my bank account. Unfortunately my UK car was repaired in Belgium which is far more than UK !!!

If this had been my dealer in UK it would be about 80% of cost which would be very good. So looking at it from that point of view I am very happy and not bankrupt :)

The lady dealt with my case at Skoda was very good so can't fault her just the system was going through the cogs of the Skoda system took far too long. So I had interest to pay on my overdraft grrr!!

But I now have 2 years warranty a car that drives again and the VRS back not a 1.2 tsi hire car :)

So will be keeping it for many more years.

Glad to hear that it is fixed and that you received a substantial goodwill contribution. The 2 year warranty on the new engine is a worthwhile bonus. Having the tensioner and timing chain changed on the original engine for the latest versions would probably have cost you £600 to buy peace of mind; and a 2 year extended warranty could well have cost more than that.

So after reading this thread I have a few questions.

First off i am looking at 59reg 2l

I am nervous about the tensioner now...

Anyone replaced just the tensioner.... If so how much?

What's this about a extended warranty who's that with and where from?

Don't want to buy this car then it go pop!!

For a warranty contact Car Care Plan on 0844 573 8017. They provide the Skoda Approved Extended Warranty - and Assistance Cover too if you want Europe-wide breakdown cover.

I would guess that replacing the timing chain tensioner and timing chain for the latest revisions would cost circa £600. That should provide permanent fixes and peace of mind for tensioner failure and timing chain stretch. If you are buying from a dealer, ask them to do the job. Otherwise ask for the selling price to be reduced to cover the likely cost of the work.

Brilliant thanks

How much leverage do I have about asking them to do work?

I have already asked them and they have said the chains good for 80k :-/

The chain doesn't have a service interval so ask them where the figure of 80K comes from. The leverage you have is to walk away from the deal - if you haven't signed a contract already.

  • 2 weeks later...

OK so my paranoia is starting to get the best of me! I have a 59 plate VRS TSI with 77k miles on it. It is out of warranty and I'm now paranoid about cam chain tensioner failure. Has anyone actually had their chain tensioner and chain replaced as a precaution by an indie garage and if so how much did it cost and who did the use??

Get the work done by a Skoda dealer because you will then have a 2 year warranty on the parts (and job) and/or buy an extended warranty.

Hi all,

First post and all that.

2010 Octavia vRs - reg in April so I think V1 timing chains, horrible rattling noise on start up.

Can somebody point me at a manual to swap the chain ? - I did the cam belt on my HATR last year - the timing chain can't be that different ( I hope-LOL)

Thanks,

Another casualty to add to the list.... :-( 2009 vRS more than likely one of the earliest if not the earliest facelifts on 65,400 miles.

Car was driving fine on Monday night but car wouldn't start Tuesday AM and is currently stuck outside my house, shiny, full of petrol but useless!

Car has been looked over by an acquaintance who suspects timing chain / cam tensioner issue and has advised me to brace myself for pain - I have in the first instance e-mailed SUK with a link to this thread to ask for advice - before having it recovered / transported (a challenge in itself).

The car has mainly Skoda SH which leaves me in a challenging position whereby I don't know if I'll be entitled to any contribution from Skoda for what as far as I can see is a known issue. The car is worth circa what I owe on it which leaves me in a potentially devastating financial position.

I may find myself having to sell the vehicle as is and taking the hit as repair by main dealer will not be economical?! What is the likelihood of finding a potential buyer with a borked engine??!

Advice would be appreciated - I am in the doom & gloom / depression phase at the moment - to some people this may be a rare issue but to others, such as myself it has massive implications! I just

I am sorry to hear your news. In the first instance I would try and get a diagnostic scan done before moving the car to check if the two fault codes in the TPI are present. If you have breakdown cover at home with one of the bigger organisations they should be able to do a scan, but you might then be committed to having your car recovered to a dealer/garage as part of that call-out before you have considered all your options. There are 4 Briskoda members in and around Manchester who might be able to help with a scan - see the thread below - although you may not be able to send PMs yet as a new member. I suggest that you post an urgent request for help with a scan in our Diagnostics Forum.

The information you need is available in ERWIN. See the first thread below for information on how to access that. I believe that the second thread below - in Russian - describes in pictures what is involved. It is a big job and ERWIN states that the assistance of a second person is needed, plus the use of special tools.

Thanks Denis

Our IT Officer at work and audi owner has VAG - COM and will potentially be able to undertake the diagnostic on my behalf

Thanks again I'll keep all updated.

Glad to help with advice. On a few occasions where the tensioner has failed and the chain has slipped, there has been no damage to pistons and valves. Keep your fingers crossed.

I will add details of your car to the list in Post #1 once the nature of the failure is clearer.

Am I right in thinking it only affects the 2.0 TSI engine? If so is the TFsi engine the same?

The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of replacing my 2003 Octy Vrs mk1 which I've owned from nearly new, with a face lift mk2 (2009-2013) 2.0 petrol Vrs, is this the FL?

What engine code should I be looking for, any tell tale signs/sounds etc.

Is there a buyers guide in this section of Briskoda?

  • Author

It affects the 1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engines fitted to Skodas; these engines have a timing chain. Confusingly, the same engines when fitted to Audis and VWs are called TFSIs. The facelift Octavia II vRS you are thinking of buying has a 2.0TSI engine. Walk away if you hear any timing chain rattle, particularly on cold start, or ask for the timing chain tensioner and timing chain to be replaced as part of the deal.

The relevant engine codes are in the post below:

Thanks for the info, I've decided to give "The Lion Garage" in Hinckley a chance, they will change the chain, tensioner and guides and do the cars oil and filter service for £450, so should that go alright I'll plan on servicing the chain as if it was a belt, maybe every 4 years/40k miles.

They indicated it would cost about £800 ish for a rebuilt head if the chain let go.

Cheers,

Cheers,

seems very cheap. I'm sure other threads quoted nearer to £800 to have this done not including your oil service as well.

Does anyone know what the latest revision code is for the tensioner?

See DGW post #516 (four slots above yours), all the information you need is in there.

Doh! So it is - sorry and thank you :)

The local VW main dealer want £800, at £100/hour, the garage I have picked  - http://www.liongarage.co.uk recon on their hourly rate as £43/hour and they claim to be a specialist.

So I'm kinda hoping they are ok, and since they can't fit me until next week, I'm guessing good enough to be busy.

The alternative would be sell the Skoda as I don't trust it.

From my research (and various posts on this forum) I have seen these 2 kits;

http://www.redlinespeedworx.com/2-0t-tsi-timing-chain-failure/

http://www.hstuning.com/product_info.php?products_id=3619

I would like to change my tensioner to the latest version and would like to get all the bolts etc that comes in these kits, does anyone have access to the part numbers for the cover, bolts and other needed bits (sealant etc) so I could buy from TPS?
