Felicia suspension

Featured Replies

Hi chaps, right Im after a little info, Im new to skoda ownership. Iv just took delivery of my grandparents ex pride and joy which takes shape as a S reg felicia 1600 which is transforming in to my road rally car, question is I need to beef up the suspension as its a little urmmm "soft" to much body roll. I need to keep ride up up near where itis now as we use mostley country lanes even white (bridel ways) and need it to be stiff but not back braking (sailsbury plane in placesis a little rough andi like my spine) do any other vag springs sit on the shockers andgive this result? iv got my hands on a set of mk3 golf 8vgti springs but not tried them yet, anybody any ideas?

Also basicly same question refrence front brakes???

thanks guys

Welcome to the forum!

I don't know many interchangeable parts, I'm sure I've heard that Golf springs can be used (not sure about a MK3 - same era, so must be true?). I know that big break conversions can be done, also rear axles and disk breaks can be fitted from a Golf (again). Also, a lot of Felicias came standard with a front strut brace, it may be worth fitting one of these to stiffen up the car around the twistys. :)

Hi thanks yeah it does have a front strut brace. Do you know of any front brakes that will fit dont realy need to go much if any bigger but would be nice to have some vented items up there if ya know what i mean, oh and im not to fussed about the back as there quite good and the handle brake works very well ;-) hehe I think that springs its going to take a while of trying and failing to get it right.

thanks for that info mate thats ace!

I'v been looking in to it a little myself and iv found out that the front springs are the same on a 1.6 and the diesel's so that isnt going to stiffin it up at all, iv also dug a litle deeper and found out the lower arms, rack ends and track rod ends are the same as fitted to a 96-00 vw caddy van and the front springs differ by one diggit on the end of the part number ie abc1234 and abc1235 so im thinking they might be slightly thicker steel or longer (along those lines for the little extra weight on the front end) I have also found online a company that dose a poly bush kit for the caddy van (but they list year as 96-03).

I was thinking oflooking down the golf brake route changing over had carrier, I know the ball joint on the felly is 2mm thinner but the golf ball joint will bolt in to the skoda lower arm but i dont know about shocker diamiter or the track rod end difference.....................but mk1 mondeo and kia it is! :-D

The kit for a 9k van is no use to you, they are totally different to the 9u and 6u type chassis on the skodas, I can pretty much guaranty you there is no poly bush kit in existence for a felicia, I made my own many moons ago, I did try and drum p some interested parties for a group buy to get the required amount a company to make a batch but there wasn't enough interest.. It's worth contacting some engineering places to see if they can machine you some up from an engineering plastic called delrin, but in all honesty it's probablyy not worth the effort.

Anti-roll bars are the way to sort body roll, not stiffer springs. You may need stiffer springs, but the ARB is the right way to go to sort that - obviously you'd need to look at front/rear roll stiffness as well or alter the handling as a result...

Tom's right about the poly bushes - everyone I know who've searched found there were none, and some have had them made up in suitable plastic. I would also concur that it's not worth the effort.

yes diesel springs will be stiffer than the 1.6 ones and lift it 1" too, failing that some ford front struts fit to the hub and are more readily available uprated, get a pickup front ARB and bushes as they are 22mm (much better than the std one but hard to find), do the front brake upgrade and fit decent pads if road rallying, I am using M1144 mintex and have done a few road rallies on them with no sign of fade at all, also worth beefing up the front chassis member under the rad as they bend for fun and gives somewhere handy for a sumpguard to be mounted from.

The biggest thing I found with road rallies in my felly was the crap lights even with 130/90w bulbs in but the facelift model has better ones.

Thanks for the info guys. Felicia16v when you say derv springs help which derv springs because in my local parts place (kyb springs i think) list the same spring for the 1.6 and derv.

Brakes I must admit iv read teflon toms write up about brakes and intend to do that, and yes i agree M1144's are good pads I use those in my astra atm, ith dot 5.1.

Lights I hope to have sorted with a pair of ring rally giants (again used on the astra) with 130w H3's in to help light the way.

So to the talk about arb you say to use the one from a pick up, I assume you mean a derv Felly pick u?.

Oh and thank you for the heads up on bracing the front cross member Im sure I would have found that out after it was to late! :-D

The felicia derv springs are definatly different to the 1.6 ones mate, best bet is get a pair of origional ones off a scrapper, KYB also think the same spring is used on on an octavia car and estate so I wouldn't go by them personally

ah right! ah wont be kyb then! lol do any other after market makers list differents springs? jut so i can put new springs on!

i think you'll be surprised how cheap the springs are geunine from skoda tbh, approx £35 each iirc which is roughly what you would get kyb springs for from a motor factor

there are 7 different springs listed for the front of a felicia, 2 of which are for the diesel models and the part numbers are 6u0411105F or 6u0411105G, both springs are largely the same except for the weight rating, the part number ending in G is the stiffest/heighest one they make, hope this helps

i've just looked up the rear springs too, theres 5 different types of rear springs, but the weight rating is not listed with the part numbers, but there is a few which are listed as combi/combi with heavy duty suspension, so that might be a good place to look. the rear heavy duty spring from an estate model might give you a bit extra ground clearance on the back end... the estate springs definitely fit the hatchback models

front anti roll bar you are looking for is from a fun model, which is 22mm the part number is 6u7411309, not all of the pickups have a anti roll bar fitted as standard, and some of them just have the normal 20mm one that the hatch uses, i bought one of these anti roll bars from a vw van dealer in southampton for about £80, the skoda dealer told me they couldnt get them because it was for a commercial vehicle, the 22mm inner roll bar bushes are 6u74011314 but you just use the standard outer links/bushes because they dont make a 22mm version of the outer bush

There is a poly bush kit available for the Felicia, from Kolar Motorsport in Czech. One of the founders is English, and they will ship to the UK. I've got a set, and though I've not yet fitted it to my Felicia rally car, it looks and feels pretty well made to me.

They do the engine/gearbox mounts too.

Cheers

Hi Satchellm

I am thinking of doing the same for a 99 1.3 Felicia. How did the job go? I am thinking of getting the shocks/springs off a 1.9D estate and fitting them. Will any other parts need to be salvaged/bought for the job.

Thanks
