first DSG issue...

Featured Replies

ok, had my first glitch with the DSG today (45k)

I was drivivng to the shop from my house, started cold, ran fine...

engine about half warmed up, pulled out of a t-junction onto a country road and when it went to change from 1st to second (or possibly secdond to third) I just got revs, there was some drive, but the clutch was slipping!

no knocks or bang or anything, no warning messages.

I was in an awkrard part of the road, not willing to stop as it would be dangerous...

tried the paddels, no effect.

just kept going with the clutch massively slipping and slight drive, until i could pull off the dangerous road... (to the smell of burning clutch.. again, no error messages, I know it should post up if the clutch gets hot, then start to simulate clutch slip to make you back off until the clutches cool... but nothing)

parked off road, put it in reverse (feild entrance) then back into drive and off... no problems, and no problems since!

anyone else had any similar issue ?

if it happens again, it'll knock my faith and I'll be looking to change!

not sure about taking it to dealers, as its now not showing anything wrong....

going to check my drive recorder, see if I can find the incident...

anyone else had anythng similar happan? and if so what was the outcome?

shark.

edit: sorting out the video now....

edit: I think it was first to second watching the vid.

The trouble is these ride the clutch into 2nd when we aren't ready for it anyway!

I'd much rather hang in 1st for a but then it shift to second.

right, as I pull out, I didn't have enough gas to get the high revs you hear in first, i was suprised it didn't change up much earlier, at a much lower speed (you know, like it goes from first to second almost straight away) ...... then you can just hear it revving until I pull off the road :(

the first drop in revs is just me letting go of the gas, as I was confused why it wasn't changing up... it wasn't a gear change.....

and I know in an overheating situation they ride the clutch deliberatly, so they can do it... this is what makes me think it was a glitch, because its capable of that, and there were no error messages at all..

maybe a faulty clutch temp sensor?

Or the clutch is faulty as my Skoda dealer replaced clutches on a superb with 50k miles, warranty helped out though.

Just watched vid - sounds like mega slip in 1st/2nd to me. That or it didn't want to change up... Get it looked at for peace of mind.

No swearing? hope you get it fixed quick - off to the dealers.

it seemed, like it moved off in first, and selected second, but then just had big slip in second gear....... odd....

I didn't swear 32k 'cause I have warrenty until september ;)

I have alot on at the moment, but will go to the dealer (or book it in) when I have some time.... I firmly beleive however (even though they are a good dealer) that they will do nothing if they cannot replicate the fault!

That's not good. Sounds like it didn't want to change up. I've noticed with mine that it will hold onto gears a bit longer than normal sometimes in D a bit like S does which I rarely use. Even in everyday driving I switch between D and paddles to stick sometimes. This doesn't fill me with confidence

it definatly changed up, (so 2nd was selected as I stil have (very) limited drive) but it never fully engaged the clutch.....

odd.

I was looking at thr RS clio as a replacememnt, given that the 6-speed twin clutch box they are going to use is a brand new renault design, It puts me off that a bit, as VAG have had millions of miles of testing to perfect the boxes, and are still getting issues.... wonder what the failure rate on the new renault box will be? hhhmmm

edit: just thinking and analizing what happened.... watching some youtube vids, software issues on some pologti's cause a box full of neutrals.. this wasn't the case, I didn't turn the engine off, and I didn't reset anything, just reversed away from the gate and all was well again... plus no warning lights or messages....

regardless of what i just said above, i suppose that could have still been 1st gear, and it just started slipping.....

note: it was reading D3 on the display!

*sigh, i dont know.

Hmm, doesn't sound good! All I can think of is maybe it got confused about what it needed to do?

If I'm not firm with mine sometimes, like when you press then let off quickly on a roundabout- glides into it in 2nd, rides the clutch for a moment before actually engaging 2nd again. In that time it feels like nothing is happening then the chargers cuts in and your off. Not the same I know, but maybe a much much more dramatic version of that?

Could this be the start of a second major fault with an otherwise amazing car. 1st oil use and now potentially the box. Mine is an early one and this all makes me weary of keeping the car outside the manufacturers warranty.

Is yours standard Sharkrider or have you remapped or TMC boxed?

I agree, I usually change at 3 years (which is in sept) when the warrenty runs out, and cannot think of a replacement really, so was seriously considering keeping mine long term....... Quentin wilsons warrenty comapny (cant remember the name) cover wear and tear and DSG (i.e replacement box if it fails) so was gonna go for them....

hopefully this is just an anomoly, a freaky thing that got something in the box's brain confused... I'm clinging to this as there were NO error or fail messages, and it carried on running without a "turn it off and on" without issue, and there havent been any problems since....

I can accept that there may be an anomoly once every 40k....... that last for a few seconds, and is not terminal....

it also gives me a bit of faith that this hasn't been experianced by anyone else, adds to the anomoly theory ! lol....

going on a long trip next weekend, we'll see how she goes ;)

it could be something as simple as the gear lever maybe not exactly in drive ? i.e you could in theory select N while driving....... I don't know, I'll report back over the next few thousand miles, got a long way to go next weekend.

mine isn't remapped.

Yeah I've been looking into Warranty Wise which is the one you are talking about but it isn't cheap. Talking towards £1,000 for a 3 year warranty. I've only had mine a year as i got it second hand so makes the decision even more difficult.

Apparently the gearbox oil needs changing after 40k. Have you had yours done? Could be related?

only the "wet clutch" DGS's need the 40k oil change, the "dry clutch" like the 7-speed in the vRS needs no oil change : :)

edit: £1000 over 3 years is expensive, but aren't these boxes about £4.5k to replace? would give peace of mind..... plus turbo supercharger ect ... all potentially expensive items ..

However I don't think we have had a turbo failure OR a supercharger failure yet (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) and there have been a few gearbox replacements, but those cars have had issues from new, i don't think there has been a gearbox that WAS working properply thats been replaced.....

mind you, i was the only member to have a gearbox replacement under warrenty on the mark I vRS ! lol...

Dave that's a big wpps ;) oil usage and now this , as above dealer visit I think

I stand corrected then :whew: . Year but would you rather put the £1000 towards a new car that's the question I'm asking myself. On the other hand, trade is prices r probably pretty poor due to the 0% VAT offer atm..

Someone on here had an experience with the DSG when pulling onto a roundabout when it did a similar thing to yours come to think of it. No errors and self fixed so seems like a slight glitch which hopefully is the same as yours.

Hope so... And agreed, that's a thought, £1000 towards a new car rather than a warrant hhhmmm

I've still not topped up with oil :) this is worrying, but like most men, I'm going to ignore it, and hope it goes away'

Theres been no blown up turbos yet as far as I can remember... Even Sy's managed to last a while on his Shark map which made it spew out white smoke without breaking.

There might of been some reported on vagoc.co.uk but ive not been on there in ages... I'll keep an eye on mines but im starting to feel like, for the lack of a better term, driving on egg shells with this car...

Mmmm it seems as the general mileage goes up, maybe there will be failures, but the only thing I can think to replace this with is another one!

You chaps got me thinking, so have looked at the two popular warranty companies tonight and see that it is about a grand for three years. On reflection that it is fairly standard when considering how much the Skoda extended warranty costs when you buy your car from new so not completely unreasonable. In addition these warranties can be bought by the year, works out slightly more expensive and there may well be some other T&C's involved, but would allow for flexibility in the future.

I must admit that the price of a new engine (£4k) and a rumoured cost of a replacement DSG (£4.5k) leaves me a little cold. But then I am a pessimist, definitely not at optimist :)

Sharkrider, sorry to here about the DSG woe, hopefully it is a one off glitch and nothing else.

Thanks Jerry, all is well for now! It's such a complicated system I am hoping it is, as the title suggests , a glitch....

I will be a little upset if my car has a serious problem, as I try to fight the corner of ' these can be reluable' but only a few of us have got this mileage on...

Let's see how it goes :)

Sharkrider, I am hoping mine will be reliable now as well. Currently have 32500 on the clock and the new job I start next Monday involves a 100 mile daily commute :( Thought about changing the car to something with a diesel lump in it but at the end of the day I own the VRS so if I run it for another one or two years it will probably be worth nothing but then I also haven't spent any more money either.

Besides, like you it is difficult to decide what you can replace it with, there is nothing really that will give the same kick for the price (and certainly not in the diesel market) so ultimately the Fabia offers pretty good value for money.

Mmmm it seems as the general mileage goes up, maybe there will be failures, but the only thing I can think to replace this with is another one!

Thats the thing. You cart go faster for less and with all the toys that can be put on for not a lot of money.

Cheap to insure, fuel, tax and buy. Nothing comes even close!
