I'd imagine the CLK would take longer to stop if you were driving on a fjord... ;)

Absolutely true if you've just hit a tree. In fact the CLK's stopping distance is probably a few mm more in such an event. ;)

maybe more with these new fangled deformable crash structures...

We recently had customer with an Audi TT - came in complaining of windnoise at 75-80 MPH - he was correctly advised by reception that we could not drive above 60mph in our local area,he asked if we would roadtest to see if noise was apparent then,ok so I send one of my technicians -- 35 minutes later the technician walks back into the workshop white as a sheet -- our "customer" had proceeded to drive on an A road -- at over 120MPH -- he then asked technician if he could hear noise - technician asked driver to pull over - he did, technician got out and walked back....

Oh that is just classic, Dave!!! I can almost see the poor bloke's face...

soft arse tech... having seen/known many garage tech's driving customers cars at more than that he must have been a bit of a wimp...

To go totally offtopic here... I have noticed that there are not many women on this forum... or are you all lurking, waiting for it to be safe to surface...?

With people like Paul "looking after your daughters interests" it is hardly a surprise... ;)

I would be a lier if I said that my technicians never break the speed limit - especialy in performance models, but we would NEVERtake a customer out and drive like that, especialy on the kind of roads this driver did.

We do sometimes need to open a car out to check a fault - there are some test's that need speed to be done(with a 2nd tech),however we carefully choose the road and time of day so as to minimise any risk -- it was peak time on a busy A road when my technician was taken out -- the speed didn't worry him -- the general standard / style / attitude very much did.

Not withstanding the fact that we sometimes do need speed - we would not break the 100MPH mark - anywhere, anytime in a customers car - can you imagine the resulting publicity if we were to have an accident -- NIGHTMARE.

I should also point out we have very strict rules as to who can drive what vehicles - i.e anyone below 25 -- gets all the excitement they want as long as its no faster than a NON-TURBO 1.8 -- and to drive anything remotely fast, like an RS4 or RS6 - you have to be 30 minimum.

The official line from Audi(UK) is that if we have a customer that comes to us complaining of a mechanical fault, that may be a safety issue, that can't be rectified without high speed(100mph+) runs -- they will -- in certain cases arrange the use of a track to enable the technical dept to have a day out thrashing around the trac, err of course I mean diagnose the fault :D -- we have never been able to get this yet tho!!

Although I must admit to once telling a technician to scare the living daylights out of one customer -- who kept coming back saying his car was slower than it should be.......

Funnily enough he never complained about the pace of his car again.... :D

back to topic... ish

do gatsos work properly in fog...? i was out in heavy fog in the tvr last night (great combo) tootling down the back roads of accrington when the gps activated to warn me of a camera ahead.. warned 40mph limit... went through at gps indicated 33 and it flashed? bemused doesnt come close? any thoughts?

Did you take not of the speed limit at all? On a sign that is, not the gps.

in the fog i couldnt see the signs... but was 40 limit from pre experiece... althought one of my work colleagues seems to thing it may have changed to a 30 a few weeks back? we shall see.. its a dealer courtesy car which is not yet regesitered to them so they might never find me.... assuming a pic of a chimera in thick fog with the fog lights on does come out... and assuming that at 33 they bother to prosecute?
