Keys

Featured Replies

I have a couple of questions about keys for my octavia.

First how do you take the 2 button remote apart ? I have bought a new case as the ket clip is missing of my original key !

Secondly when i got the car the guy gave me three keys for the car 2 remote keys one normal, One of the remote keys does nt work properly, the guy lost if for a bit and i think then got the non remote key, The key turned up one day but it doesnt start the car properly, It unlocks fine by remote but it will start the car for about a second then the car cuts out ????

The key should just pull apart it might need a small screwdrive to prize apart carefully as for the key that dosent work properly any kind of re sync to the key is a main dealer job they will tell u if its broken a new remote from the dealers isnt cheap you can get ebay ones but it will still need the main dealer to sync it to your car .

The reason the car cuts out with the found key is because when the owner purchased the non remote key, to pair it with the immobiliser all keys have to be erased and re-added. The found key is not working because its been deleted from the immobiliser, to get it working again the two functioning keys need to be deleted and all three added to the immobiliser. This requires either a dealer or VCDS along with the 4 digit SKC if you DIY it.

Thanks for you replys, I did wonder if the key needs recoding to the car, Is there anyone local other than the dealer who can do this, mannyo ? I ask you as you are local to me !

I take it the dealer can supply the 4 digit code ? No doubt for a price. I will check if the code is with the car as the previous owner got the replacement key from the main dealer.

I only had one key with my VRS and went to the dealers, was quoted around £ 105 for the key and about 50 to code it.So I did abit of looking online and did what the bloke you bought your car off and got a new normal key cut and coded for about £50.If you can find someone with vagtacho & vagcom it will probably be cheaper than the dealers.

i bought a remote locking kit for my octy, as it is that old, i couldn't find a remote fob that would work on it. the kit worked fine, however there was no "chip" in the key for the immobiliser. I took it along to a local locksmith in the market one saturday, along with the original key with the chip, and he cloned a chip for the new remote key, which worked perfectly. iirc it only cost about £15 and took him half an hour to clone it and fit it in the key. No need for dealers, or SKK

|Oh almost forgot, he cut the keyblade too.

don't take it to the dealers for any kind of key programming/resync! do a bit of research. There's plenty of people that will come to you & do it for a fraction of the cost

I have one key for my 2000 octy, I was stunned at quotes for a second key - 180quid in one case!!!

I managed to get hold of a copy of vagtacho - can I clone my existing key with that programme if I buy

a second hand one on ebay? (I found one that LOOKS identical to mine on ebay (see pic below) is likely it to work for me?

or are there lots of different versions in the same case?)

My existing key has a 2 button remote in the key like in the pic below

Will the vagtacho process also programme the remote locking or is that a separate process to linking the key to the immobiliser?

Thanks

Tony

vagtacho doesn't clone keys. It programs them into the system as a totally new key with it's own id. Yes there's different versions of remote in the same case so don't buy 1 just because it looks the same.

Also if you buy a 2nd hand key your not going to be able to program it to start your car as the transponder is locked to the original car it came from. Ao by the time you've bought a 2nd hand remote key, fitted a new blade & transponder to it you may as well have just bought a new remote as they're not that expensive. You can also go for the better flip type.

Part number you need is 1j0959753N. They can be picked up easily enough from ebay. I will have some in stock as well

Thanks actionman.

So when Quarry Bodger said that he had a key cloned how would that be done?

If I got a key from you how do I match it to my car?

it depends on which transponder is in the key as to if it can be cloned or not. The pre 2000 Octavia use id13 transponder which can be cloned using a TP5 cloning transponder, 2000 onwards use an id48 which can't be cloned so they have to be programmed diagnostically using VAG software or key programming equipment. You'll also need the SKC

I am in the same boat.

2004 classic with 1 key.

What is SKC???

security key code. You can't program keys into the car without it. I'm actually sorting a group buy meet down South for keys on the TT forum at the moment. It's going to be 1 Saturday over the next few weeks. Done 2 already down South with TT forum. Usually meet at Cobham services just off the M25.

Then i normally make a detour or 2 on my way back up home to do keys for others that aren't that far South & don't want to drive to Cobham

my trip South is gonna be on Sat 22nd June

Thanks Actionman. What are the different ways of getting a SKC?

Would this be essential if I came on 22nd?

(are you am32 on ebay???)

the only way to read the SKC is to plug some kind of diagnostic equipment/software into the car that can extract the SKC.

As for if it's essential. If your car uses an id48 transponder then yes it is, just as i said in my previous post id48 can't be cloned. I have 4 or 5 different bits of software & equipment that reads VAG SKC's. If it uses an id13 transponder then i wouldn't need the SKC as i could clone it if I wanted to, which I wouldn't. I'm not a fan of cloning so i always program diagnostically unless for some reason none my equipment hasn't managed to extract the SKC, which is extremely rare. Doing it that way gives the new transponder it's own id in the system. If you clone key no2 for example then some time later if the immob decides it doesn't like key no2 then you end up with 2 keys that won't work.

This is very very rare, but i still prefer to do it diagnostically

Yes i'm am32 on Ebay
