Is there a set mileage where you change the water pump or is it generally when you change the cam belt? or do you not even need to replace the water pump every x K miles?

Car has its belt replaced last time at 60k and has just go over the 101k mark.

Easier to chnge pump while you do your cambelt. Save on labour and peace of mind.

As above for the minimal extra cost it's normally done at the belt change to save the extra time/labour if it fails at a later date.

It's a lot easier to do both together, as in it takes as much work to change a water pump by itself as to change a cambelt.

The water pump is less failure prone on diesels and petrol atmos than on the 1.8T, but a mate of mine had his (diesel car) pump strip the drive splines off the impellor between cambelts.

Most independant specialists now treat the water pump as a service item.

Its looking right at you when the cambelt is off. its only 3 bolts and it comes out! plus you can change the coolent so everything makes sense.

£45 for a genuine one on ebay and the like.

I believe the quality of water pumps you have to be careful with. I've read genuine Skoda water pumps have a plastic impeller, which has been know to break up. You are better to buy (or make sure the garage buys) a non-genuine pump with a metal impeller. http://www.briskoda....for-vrs-please/

I'd also change the Auxiliary belt (sometimes called V-belt or fanbelt) at the same time. A coolant flush and change won't do any harm either.
