New home ISP now sorted, thanks all :)

Featured Replies

Just been informed that o2 home broadband has been sold to Sky, that's me looking for a new BB supplier then as I refuse to give any money to the Murdoch empire. Such a shame as o2 BB is brilliant :(

Any suggestions for a good ISP welcome :)

  • I'd seriously recommend ditching your scruples on this one and just getting Sky. They're an excellent ISP. I've got their fibre offering and it's superb. I've only gone for the 40mbit, not the 80, but

  • If speed and contention ratios are going to be important considerations then you'd be better off staying away from the cheaper venders. PlusNet like BT/TalkTalk are going to squeeze the bandwidth as m

Are you in a Virgin cabled area?

I HATE Murdoch too

BT BB seems reliable and the Infinity is fast. Also you can get a cheap YouView box for catchup TV.

Sky are really very good - and Murdoch doesn't own all of them, just 40%

No, unfortunately :(

Thanks for the suggestions so far all, I have our phone with talk talk so might have a look at getting BB from them too :wonder:

Been with PlusNet for a year now, no problems. However I am now leaving for TalkTalk as PlusNet retentions wouldn't play ball at renewal time.

Cheers Ian, I'll have a good look at that later.

If you want to use P2P you HAVE to avoid the big guys, they have to comply with the website blocking orders; whereas the smaller ISPs (like mine), dont..

Have a look here, every ISP in Europe is covered

Well the company I use isn't listed, nor is the local supplier in town here.

However, I have used a small company for 5 years now, and although it might cost me a few pounds more each month it is great, if there is a problem, to be able to ring up someone with a name I know, and who recognises my name, and is able to sort the problem out quickly (and in English!!)

So, who's your supplier then? :)

Company called "Headweb" based in Kidderminster.

Thanks, I'll check them out. A long time ago I was with Pipex who weren't cheap but by gum they were good.

Switched to Plusnet last month. All went very smoothly and no complaints so far.

That......

Don't forget about FREESAT  :p

You'll need to checkout what providers are LLU at your telephone exchange, otherwise you'll just piggyback off BT's infrastructure with all its restrictions passed onto wholesale. For example Sky Connect is run over BT and is heavily throttled by BT since sky only pay for a certain amount of bandwidth from BT.

Although you may not like the thought of Sky, they are very good if you can get full SKY LLU.

Avoid talktalk like the plague, its sold at a budget price for a reason. Poor service to your home and terrible customer service when you complain, that is if you can actually get the indian call centre to understand you as their CS staff have to follow a predefined script and there is no deviation from that.

I am however also thinking of ditching sky (TV, Internet and phone), to save money and move over to BT infinity and Freesat. However I may have issues down the line whilst tied into the 18 month contract.

Sky have also bought O2 and are looking to heavily invest and upgrade the ailing infrastructure.

Cleverly they'll get a chunk of 3G and 4G spectrum overlap which they can deploy as wifi space - which is why BT bid for a 4G licence

Not quite. From Sky's own web site:

The deal is due to complete by the end of April, subject to regulatory approval.

Just re-read one source I saw yesterday about Sky & O2 and the one I'm sure mentioned buying o2 from Telefonica now says it's fixed line only side they're buying. The mobile side isn't changing.

Tell them to contact Mark at ISPR and he will add them to the ISPR listings and create a forum area for them.

http://www.ispreview...uk/submit.shtml

Most start-ups notify him as a matter of course, but sometimes the very small ones forget, or dont know about ISPR, so unless someone wanders in and asks specifically about that ISP, he wont know to add them.

HOWEVER, if they dont/wont meet the rules and regs for UK ISPs, he wont list them - occasionally rogue ISPs appear, and this is the best way to stop them using the ISPR system to tout for business.

PS, if they are that small (and I have never heard of them, despite living just down the road), the chances are they are a VISP - selling someone elses service; so you need to know WHO they use - or you could end up on a TalkTalk pipe.

BTW BT Wholesale do NOT pass on all their restrictions to customers/resellers; if they did I would be unable to read TBP, H33T or other P2P sites recently blocked; if SKY Connect is heavily throttled then the blame almost certainly lies with SKY being too tight to pay for an adequately sized pipe to connect them to the BT system. SKY has always had bad press for the slow speed of its non LLU'd areas.
