A single tap sound from rear wheel area as I brake.. TDI Estate 07..

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had my rear pads done about 2 months ago and all is fine, but only just recently I hear a single tap sound from the rear wheel area when I brake.

Any ideas as to what it could be..?

Thanks

Stephen..

Do you hear it with the windows up or down? Have you double checked the rear cubbies and spare wheel area for anything loose or rolling around? The spare wheel itself should be checked that it is secure.

Hi,

No there is nothing rattling around in the boot or the spare wheel compartment..... the noise seems to come through the interior a little.. its quite hard to really stick my head out the window to see if its more of an external noise.. breaking seems fine and does so in a straight line.. no lights coming up on the dash.. hmmm...

If there's nothing superficial like the suggestion in #2, then perhaps a proper check over is in order? It is difficult to diagnose remotely from a pretty vague description.

Brakes and/or suspension could be suspects and are best kept in proper working order rather than waiting for a more serious manifestation of their impending demise.

If you suspect the recent brake work done may be the cause, why not go back to the company that did the work and ask them?

If there is something less likely to cause catastrophic failure, like an exhaust bracket/hanger say, then that should be discovered too.

These inspections can be very easily and far more effectively carried out on a proper vehicle lift than by jacking up a corner at a time.

Cultivating your local garage/independant pays dividends, they can usually see the benefit of a bit of free diagnostics, unlike some franchises who expect payment for every minute.

My 20p worth (2p, with allowance for quantative easing).

+1 on getting the garage to look at it but to possibly help check this thread out:

Don't know if it rings a bell, but mine was more noticeable on braking, tap tap tap, but I had the same problem Wardy described and diagnosed. Was easy to fix once wheel is off,and would be easier still on a ramp, just remove arch liner and tighten the bolts holding the suspension arm.
