Annoying rattle

Featured Replies

I'm extremely pleased with my new vRS, not least because it's so quiet, or it would be were it not for an intermittent plastic-sounding rattle from the boot. Not a loud noise, but that makes it all the more annoying. :swear:

I've done all the usual things, removed all items, had the trims off, secured any less than perfectly routed wiring etc etc etc. I can see nothing that could be making the noise -- except possibly the vents shown in the picture.

The 2 vents have hard plastic flaps which, although spring loaded, move with very little force.

Grasping at straws I'm beginning to think it could be these that are making the noise.

Next step is to secure them temporarily with foam or similar, though as it's an intermittent rattle it could be some days before I can tell.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

A similar rattle on my Roomster turned out to be a rear seat belt buckle touching the trim

A rattle in my brand new vRS turned out to be one of the plastic studs and bolt that holds the high level brake light in place - it had sheared off (guess over tightened during manufacture) and was rolling around inside the plastic trim on the inside/top of the tailgate.

Drove me nuts for 3 weeks before I found it!

Both mine have done this, but because it only seems to be for a few minutes when I first set off (if at all), I haven't seriously tried to find the cause. Funny how it seems to go once everything warms up.

Plastic trim on the upper rear tailgate for me. Little foam between it and the window/metal sorted it!

Seats not fully locked back?

Thanks for all the ideas folks.

Now, seats locked in placed OK.

Seat belts fastened to eliminate that one.

Tailgate trims (both) removed when checking for ????? Nothing seemed amiss in there & went back without trouble.

Was out in it yesterday for a couple of hours and not a sound, but then it did that a week back and the following day the damn rattle was back. Doesn't appear to be related to temp either. It's beginning to really annoy me now :wall:

But I will find it... so guess it's off to the car again!

Parcel shelf? where does sound seem to be coming from? Low down? Ive heard people mention the upper brakelight too

Not the parcel shelf, to test I removed that altogether.

From the drivers seat best I can say is offside (probably), but I've discounted the vents now.

Maybe when I sit the Mrs in the back it may become clearer to pinpoint, but right now I deserve a pint!

get your mrs to drive the car around while you sit in the boot?

or.. just take it back to the dealer - its under warranty still?

I've got a similar rattle.

Can be heard when going over rough surfaces.

Sounds like something rattling around.

Booked in for 18th at the dealers so will see what they see.

Have had a look myself but can't seem to find anything.

Phil

def go down a road where you know it makes the noise and get the mrs to drive, from experience I would say your chances of a dealer sorting this for you easily are slim

Tailgate not tight enough when closed? Happened to me (estate). Adjusted stoppers, silicon on rubber. Rattle sorted.

Good luck with it!

Thanks for the further suggestions. Afraid the Mrs driving is one too far though.....!!!!:giggle:

Strange thing is it doesn't need to be a rough road, just slightly uneven is enough to hear it. Then other days on a quite rough surface & not a sound. Very strange.

Knowing dealers (& my luck) the damn noise wouldn't materialise if I took it in. So for now I'll persevere, (& maybe check back after the 18th if I haven't won {Phil-E}.)

What I did with a mate. Found it in 5 seconds flat.

I think he was actually kidding................

I've had a similar rattle(s) for 3 years; since it was 2 months old in fact. Dealer couldn't find, and the rattle was and is intermittent. Never occurs on very cold days or very bad roads. I'm used to it now and my mates have stopped making old Skoda jokes after all we are talking German engineering design here.

Good luck in your quest for rattle free motoring

Was the high level brake light cover in mine. It's had a little bit of tape on it for 6yr nearly now.

I keep seeing this mentioned but the cover on mine is rock solid and no movement in it.

Is it the same on preFL and FL?

Phil

No idea I'm afraid.

I've also has the rear seat bolster rattling but that just needed reseating. It's a pretty goo car for rattles really. My Clio was an orchestra of squeaks and rattles at half the age of the Octy.

I had a similar problem in my megane took me ages to figure out what it was. I even spent a whole night in the boot with the wife driving round all sort of roads.

In found the problem to be the boot locking mechanism. The small metal bar and hook didn't lock tightly and causes a rattle some electrical tape tightly wrapped around the bar shut the boot and locked it went for a drive and rattle gone. Maybe try this out?

Just had the tailgate trims (both) off again. Could see nothing amiss, HL brake light solid, & trims firm when in place, can't make either rattle. Tailgate closes/fits well. Lock solid enough.

Had the rear seat bolsters off, again OK.

At least I'm getting pretty good at removing/refitting the various trims, and I will not be beaten! :punch:

Yes, my feelings until today, life is too short and I am beaten! Yesterday had the rear seat bolsters off to see if I could get rear seats to drop flat. After putting bolsters back and checking for tight fit I took car for drive and hells bells a new set of rattles. SWMBO reckons I should leave well enough alone and get on with life ie all those odd jobs about the place.

I wonder if its the start for you of the fault I have, see the thread in this section I revived yest. I could have sworn it was interior trim till I took it all off and listened very carefully in the back while my dad drove.

I haven't got to that stage yet, and as for odd jobs.. priorities! Must get the pride & joy sorted first
