Annoying rattle

Featured Replies

Sorted!! All is now quiet.

Turns out it was the LH support for the luggage compartment cover that hadn't been fitted properly at the factory, meaning that a broken clip wasn't holding it in the correct position. No obvious signs though, as the parcel shelf seemed rock steady. Just about the only thing I hadn't suspected.

Once wedged temporarily the rattle was no more. A new panel fitted under warranty completed the job.

I'd like to say I found it but in fact it took the dealer a full day, then once a panel had been received another hour & half to fix. Still, it was worth it as I'm now driving a superbly quiet car.

Good man! My parents' fully loaded Superb developed a very annoying rattle in the boot area.

Dad went back to the dealer, who insisted on...climbing in the boot, closing the bootlid and yelling at my dad "just drive around a little, find a speedbump or something"

Turned out to be a nut rolling around in the ski bag thingie (and I'm not talking about the dealer) :giggle:

Hiya, yes I get annoyed by two or three different rattles on my 12-plate Octy vrs TDi CR everyday! One rattle sounds like it is coming from the dashboard/glove box panel area and seems to appear at around the 30-40 mph mark. Another rattle/vibration comes from the door tweeter on the front passenger side. Never had a car that has had such consistent rattles/vibrations from the interior trim. Other than that though, I love the car!

Ooops... don't know what happened to the image above but in case anyone's interested it here...

Thanks for the update. Will check on my car... when I finally get it back...

One of mine was the lock catch - even adjusting the boot stoppers wouldn't cure it without putting too much tension against the catch - so I just wrapped a bit of loom tape round the metal loop and no more rattle.

I had a similar rattle/buzz from the glove box/A pillar area intermittantly. I tried all the solutions on here but it never disappeared. One day out of desperation I began tapping around underneath the car (FL 2011 model). On both sides running from the front wheearch back are two long metal covers protecting the gubbins underneath the car. When I tapped these I found they rattled like hell. Turns out they are great collectors of small pieces of grit and stone which collect inside and then have nowhere to go. I got my son to bang these covers and sure enough when inside the car the rattle appears to come from the A pillar/front corners of the car. Due to a severe lack of any mechanical ability I was not willing to attempt to remove the covers but eventually came up with another solution. I parked on a steep slope facing uphill and banged the plates from the front. All the grit bounces to the back and then out of the end of the covers. You can even reach in and collect it as there's a small lip at the end just in front of the rear wheel (porbably how it gets in there in the first place). There was a hell of a lot in mine. Sure enough I have had no rattles for a few weeks now. I know it sounds crazy but I started on the premise that the rattle doesn't always come from the area you think and if you give it a go it may work for you too.

I definitely have something rolling around inside the trim on the boot lid (estate) how easy do the plastic panels come off? Its only a few months old and I don't want to damage it. I want to avoid a trek to the dealers so may live with it.

i think it is expanding material sound , just turn the heat to max wait few minutes without drive the car , then turn the it to coold air fastely , then you can click sounds from random places ,

Had a broken tailgate cover clip rattling around in mine upon delivery, sorted under warranty. Otherwise have to agree its generally v good for not ratting; have a couple of minor door trim rattles caused by speaker vibrations, mainly on the rear doors and also the climate control temp rings buzz with certain RPMs ans a bit of a lacknof sound deadening in the engine bay otherwise not much to moan about.....in a way its better that the MK6 Golf I came from....not quite so "plush" perhaps but generally more solidly bolted together....to be fair though I did have an early MK6 and it did have a few build quality issues.

I had quite a lot of practice with my hatchback. :whew: Not a difficult job with a little care.

Start with top pic. Remove screw 2, then from A work around the edge with a trim removal tool (or something wide & flat that won't damage the trim). The clips just pull out, with a little effort.

Then pic 2. Remove the parcel shelf retainers at 4 (be sure to use a well fitting torx socket as these damage easily otherwise) & screws 2. Again unclip from A.

Before you refit just be sure all the clips are fastened into the trim panels.

Thanks guys. I will maybe live with it until I need to go for a service of some more serious warranty work. The sound of a car seat rattling is more annoying (as is the noise coming from the child in it:-)

A big thanks to rob_e for the heads up on the rattle he had.

I noticed an annoying rattle from the rear of the car, it would seem to roll around as I cornered.

Turns out I too have one of the three studs sheared during the fitting of the high level brake light.

My question is now do I just ignore the fact the light is held on with 2/3 of the desired fittings or take it back to the dealer for a new light?

It depends on how much of a perfectionist you are. If it's held firm you could leave it, but personally I'd have it replaced (as it's warranty & to avoid any similar issues later).

Glad you got it sorted, that's exactly the same piece of plastic i pulled out from mine.. :)

The brake light seems to be fine with one missing stud - i'll mention it to the guys when it goes in for the first service but tbh i'm not fussed about replacing it - it seems fine as it is.

Had exactly the same thing in my Combi.

10 minutes spent stripping the panels off and finding the culprit.

Job worth doing.

A rattle in my brand new vRS turned out to be one of the plastic studs and bolt that holds the high level brake light in place - it had sheared off (guess over tightened during manufacture) and was rolling around inside the plastic trim on the inside/top of the tailgate.

Drove me nuts for 3 weeks before I found it!

Hi Rob, I think I have the same rattle or rolling sound. Did it sound like it was rolling around during corners and when stopping or starting off? Also what did you have to take off to find it? the red light lens cover or the hole rear trim? Mines still under warranty but I'm willing to try it myself as it's quicker than making an appointment with the dealer and having to convince him to sit in the cargo area so he can hear it.  Thanks if you can help at all.

I had the same problem with my brand new one.

Rather than take time to go back to the dealers I pulled off the inner panel from the taligate and found the culprit.

Put back on the panel, I suppose less than 10 minutes in total and job done.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely can hear it by the 3rd brake light. I just have to safely take off the panel. I don't want to break any of the clips holding it on. Car noises drive me crazy.

yep, as above - the inner panel clips off pretty easily and you'll find the offending piece of plastic.

Guys I need some advice.

Took the lower trim and upper trim off to try and find any loose bits but can't find any.

I am having a nightmare trying to slide the lower trim back into place and line the clips up on my own. Plus I bust one of the clips argh!

Any advice for refitting?

I had the same problem, remove the parcel shelf and kneel in the boot facing out, it is easy to align the left and right (pointed part) then push in the clips at edge C. Before pushing in clips (no. 4) make sure the wedge shaped piece of plastic inboard of the clips is fed up into the tailgate before pressing home, the rest of the clips on the lower edge should go in no problem.

Have a look at #36, the pic should help.

Annoying vibration - I too have a rattle in my new Octavia drivers door panel and it is slowly getting louder.

It sounds like a mechanical sound to me?
