Where do i stand?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just a quick question that I'm sure one of the knowledgeable folk here will be able to answer.

I'm taking my VRS estate back to the dealer to have the rear wiper motor replaced, which I am told is extremely common due to a fault with the motor itself. They called me to tell me the new revised motor is in stock and that I can drop it off when ever is convenient and they will fit it for me.

They were more than happy to help and I must say, was very pleased with the service i received.

Now onto killing multiple birds with one stone.

I have had the car for less than a week, was on just over 1400 miles, and since I have covered around 250 miles, avoiding any potholes, and haven't bumped up any kerbs etc. I noticed yesterday that the front, drivers side tyre has a bulge in the sidewall so, it obviously needs replacing.

I understand tyres are wear and tear parts, but covering the short distance I have, and being mindful of any holes/bumps. Do I need to fork out for some new rubber, or would this be considered a fault with the tyre and be replaced by the dealer?

Also, on my trip to the dealer, is it worth asking for an MDI cable, or is it too late? As i understand that these should be supplied?

Thanks, Ryan.

Don't like your chances with the tyre, unless the alloy is buckled?

Put the spare on and drive at reduced speed until the tyre is replaced.

*Is the bulge on the outside and you have only just noticed it?

Call into a good tyre fitting centre, play dumb about the tyre and ask them to look at it, and get an opinion.

Or just tell them the truth and ask an opinion.

If you have damaged it you need to replace and pay.

If in their opinion it looks faulty, then ask the Dealership about the tyre and the PDI used car inspection & was the tyres checked well.

what tyres fitted and what tyre pressure did they come to you at?

(if you never checked the pressures when you collected the car and before driving,

check them now, if all over the place and incorrectly set, then that strengthens the case to argue the bulge was there and they never checked the car properly, the Dealership may not dispute then..)

Ask for the MDI cable IMO.

*was this a Demonstrator that you bought?*

What faulty rear wiper that is a common fault.

If something is faulty regularly and there are revised parts for them, they should be checking better before putting vehicles out to customers, not wasting customers time..

(they speak with forked tonque)

since they tell fibs push for a new tyre free gratis.

Thanks for all the info George, going to go into a tyre place and get their opinion like you said, then based on what they say I will take it up with the dealer.

Fair enough, if it's down to something I did then I am happy to pay for a replacement but in my opinion I can't have treated the tyres any better, avoiding any potential nasties. Will try and follow this up today and see what happens, will return here with the outcome.

In answer to your questions:

-Yes the bulge is on the outside, I noticed it yesterday but it may have been there for a while.

-The car was a demonstrator.

Thanks for the input guys!

Hopefully the Dealership will not argue with you.

They will know which Salesperson was driving the car and their driving habits.

Checking how the pressures are set is always a good negotiation point to show that the vehicle was not really checked over before delivery,

EDIT.

(the car washer/valeter normally notices more than the Techs and would see a bulge on a tyre.)

Have fun, it is a lovely car. I spotted it in the Register last night.

Will check the pressures before i set off, hopefully will get the result I need. Don't particularly want to fork out for a new tyre after such a short period but we will see how it goes.

Lets hope this is only a small hiccup to the start of my ownership of a fantastic car :)

Cheers George.

Just beautiful in the fastest colour.

(not very Q car tho, watch out you do not want points on the licence.)

I'd have thought the dealer would sound surprised that it had developed a wiper fault so soon, instead of making up a 'well known fault' story - surely that would actually sound worse to a new car purchaser?

Just occurred to me, but... do tyres come with any sort of warranty? Obviously, not against wearing out, but premature failure?

My 62 plate Roomster was a 3 month old 3k demo. Made the mistake of collecting it at dusk - in cold light of day noticed the radio aerial and MDI cable were missing, also a small badly repaired scratch on the tailgate - all sorted without complaint and with profuse apologies from the salesman. Was told MDI cables often go missing from demonstrators (perhaps not surprising at 20 quid a pop).

Ryan, tyres like everything else these days have a warranty against faulty manufacture. It's limited with tyres. But a good tyre tech can usually tell if the bulge is due to faulty manufacture or impact by examining the inside bands. This has clearly happened at low miles so may just be faulty manufacture. A bulge is caused by damage to the bands, and caused by faulty manufacture or impact. Sometimes it's very clear what has happened and the tyre can be replaced under warranty if it's not impact damage. Worth getting it examined, and good luck!

Perhaps it's a well known fault with them because they have a staff member who always forgets to swich off rear wipers so they work away for hours on dry screens!!!
