Tyre Pressures

Featured Replies

I know this will have been asked before but I wanted to gauge opinion on tyre pressures (specifically the rear).

I pumped my tyes up to 32PSI all round recently, however there seems to be an annoying "scuttle" at the rear of the car when going over very minor bumps in the road. This wasn't an issue previously when all tyres were at 28PSI.

Any opinions on what's for the best? I rarely carry any load whatsoever unless I'm taking stuff to the tip, and drive 100% on-road.

Taverymuch

  • I think I'll try helium in mine so I can 'float' over the bumps!

  • Some will say its a "characteristic" of the 17" rims and rubber band tyres I don't get this on my 16" rims with balloons for tyres...!!

  • Just to be different I'm running my winters on 2.4 bar, which is the recommended +0.2 over standard.

What size tyres are fitted to yours?

What pressures are listed inside the fuel hatch?

Ah sorry, 225/50/17.....not sure what's on the inside of my fuel flap, I'm sat at my desk!

It reads 2.1 bar front and back without cargo!

1 bar = 14.5037738 pounds per square inch

so 2.1 = 30.5lb/sq"

I run my diesel 4x4 at 34lb/sq" unless I've got the caravan hitched up.

Sounds like I've over-inflated them

Thanks as always my ever-reliable Yeti-brethren :sun:

I run mine at 32psi all round (17" wheels) if I'm towing my boat I put the rear on 34psi

(but I usually forget!)

32psi all round on mine

+ another

+ 1 more........32 PSI (2.2 Bar) all round works for me [Dunlop SP 225/50 R17]

And another one here

Yep - 225/50/17's @ 32lbs all round.

Answer seems to be 32lbs

It's also what I've been running at!

It says 2.2bar inside my filler cap so that's what I use. Presumably it might differ with different models? A 1.2 TSi 2wd manual will weigh a lot less than a 140dsg.

Would agree the weird ride characteristics and occasional poor grip does appear to be associated with the 17" rims. Noticed it with Yeti no. 1 but on switching to 205/55 R16 winters it went away, hence why I went to the effort of getting Yeti II on 16". I would also suggest the 215/60 are even better than the 205/55 and absolutely spot on perfect for the cars chassis and suspension ratings. Nearly 30k on the clock now and I'm in no doubt taking on SUK was more than worth that effort.

Being SI educated, I concur 2.2 Bar, is what I'm using ;-) What is PSI? ;-)

Hope everyone is not using electric pumps gauges to verify the pressure? They are no where near as accurate as the good old mechnical deflection gauge.....

Speaking of Imperial any chance anyone knows how to change the navigation (amunsden+), in the to Read in Metric? Yards and feet is doing my head in?

2.2bar = 32psi. My label says 2.2 all round normal, 2.4 front x 3.0 rear fully loaded. It shows the same info for 16" and 17" tyres.

I use an electric pump, pressures adjusted to suit readings on an old-fashioned stick gauge (there was another thread on gauges a few months ago).

Forecourt pressure gauges used to be notoriously inaccurate.

Perhaps these days they are better, I don't know and am not prepared to take the risk.

I use one of those High Pressure bicycle pump type things that looks like an old fashioned stirrup pump. I check pressures with a Draper (69924) gauge - its about £8-9 and sits on the end of a rubber hose. The best bit is that it locks the reading so that you can stand up and adjust your glasses for a better look.

Forecourt pumps are now subject to testing by Environmental Health (Weights and Measures to us oldies) and certainly around here are done quite regularly. There is a very small percentage error allowed!

And I wonder how many people have had their old "stick" or "pop-up" gauge checked? Drop one of those a few times or don't lightly lubricate them and they soon loose accuracy. The electonic Michelin ones always seem to get excellent reports, but aren't cheap.

My self I use the one on my electric pump and it is consistent and as far as I can tell accurate with my very old but occasionally maintained "pop-up"

The problem with any forecourt or public access gauge is the public have access. Having witnessed some of the clumsiness metered out to inanimate objects by the great unwashed, the gauge can be perfect in the morning and bust by lunchtime. Most of the local garages removed the free ones and replaced them with coin op ones years ago. Now they are just removing them, the local BP has been broken for 18 months that I know to.

I bought a digital one that slips in easily to the seat back stowage. £4.99 along with other clutter from lidl. Not sure how accurate it is, but the tyres feel firm to the toe after being ministered to.

Are we allowed to finish sentences with "to"? That's three times in one post. Along with all the other errors to which I am prone.
