Amundsen or Columbus?

Featured Replies

I was just looking at the options on a new Octavia and was wondering what the difference is between the Amundsen sat nav and the Columbus one?

My current Renault Laguna has an inbuilt TomTom with traffic info and speed camera alerts and I need the Skoda system to be equally as good as the TomTom.

Also, on the Skoda units, if I plug a usb memory stick full of music in folders into the usb socket, does the playlist/folders come up on the screen? My current Renault has aux in and bluetooth but all I can do with the car controls is volume adjust and skip tracks.

Many thanks,

Kevin.

Neither of those (using TMC) will be as good as TomTom traffic.

Good point - must remember to take a USB stick with files / folders / playlists on it when I have my demo tomorrow.

I have a feeling I may keep using my TomTom 750 for Live Traffic and PocketGPSWorld camera alerts, though that seems a bit like overkill in an Elegance spec car...

The Columbus is a much better system than the Amundsen. The only issue I have with inbuilt sat nav's are the price!

You can import the pocketgpsworld database into the columbus, and display them as POI's but you get no audible warnings. The import is done via SD card, for this to work it must be running the latest firmware.

The traffic on the columbus is just fine, you get full european TMC data for free and from my experience it seems very accurate.

I was worried, having ordered an Octy 3 with amundsen that the screen would be too small given that all the publicity shots ands road test cars has columbus fitted. but having test driven an Octy with the amundsen fitted i'm relieved to find the screen to be big enough, most controls appear intuitive but i'll have to study the manual ( available online) for sure

The Octy 3 system is totally different.

Edit:- Maybe I should have said that the Amundsen and Columbus on the Octy 3 are different from the Amundsen & Columbus on the Octy 2 as I missed which car the OP was considering buying!

Just had a quick play with the the Amsden and didn't realise it showed up details from the car on it like mpg, distance and so on. This car had no details as it was loaded into the showroom

You will see the details in the small screen beside the pdo. That's the main thing as a plus for a fixed GPS. I have a Amundsen+ in ny car and just love it. The only bad thing is that i can't add my own POI as speed cams.

Personally I struggle to see the value in paying so much money to upgrade from Amundsen; sure Columbus is ulltimately better but it in reality probably won't navigate any better. Only downside is 2D maps but I'd probably just live with it.

I have amundsen + in the blackline and love it....what does Columbus have that the amundsen + doesn't?

Does the admunsen have a disk drive

It has a smaller screen and a 2d display from what I have seen

The amundsen + holds maps on internal memory. It also has 3d maps.
