Rainx

Featured Replies

I tried this on my Fabia and was not particulary impressed. It took a lot of elbow grease to remove the bloom it left. I was hoping that rain would easily bounce off, but no - at least not at speeds up to 50mph. It gathers in small globules. I remember using something many years ago (called Rainkote, I think) that caused rain to bounce of so easily that I didn't need to use the wipers.

What do others think of Rainx? Is there anything better available?

I use rainx and am pleased with it, and it tends to last for a while before needing to do it again. Then again, not tried any other rain repellant so maybe I dont know what I am missing.

I only use it on the rear window, I am a bit cynical about it working on the front, also what are the wipers on the front for ?

Presumably the same purpose as the wiper on the rear :)

bit lost by that one too

I was quite impressed with rain-x.

Whilst it wont eliminate the need for wipers (that would just be silly) It does increase visability when it is raining and you have your wipers on.

Rain X in my view is a great product as it help to clear the rain from your windscreen and it does exactly what it says on the bottle.

It definately aids your view in the rain as the rain is cleared that much quicker, whether your wipers are on or off and your windows keep cleaner as well.

As previously mentioned you only need to apply it about once a month and does need much application, give it a try you won't be disappointed.

And for the price you really cant go wrong!

If rain-x is good enough for amateur racing drivers with no windscreen wipers, its good enough for me. Works well, esp. at higher speeds

halfords do a pritty good rain repelant works great

The short video clip looks just as I would have expected of Rainx - although I haven't driven at speed in torrential rain with it yet. It is a bit expensive though. I was amused at the following comment on the website:

"Fantastic - I have bought it for the whole family!" Mr PS, London

What did he do - apply it to their foreheads?

Save on hair washing maybe :D

But it does work ...on cars:thumbup: did the whole of mine including side windows and will be getting some for the next car

Re the expense thing on the Ombrello, I just had to reapply mine :( It only lasted 48,000 miles :D

Read the reviews section on it.

I'd vote for Ombrello too :D

Never got round to requiring a re-application on mine ;) :(

We did a group buy some time ago, organised by Jon and Jason IIRC.

As with all of those products though, I think it really really really really really pays to clean the windows / windscreen well before applying :)

Actually applied rainx for the first time this weekend and been quite inmpressed. If nothing else, it should help cut down the amount of dead insect life glued to the screen.

Has anyone used the rainx screenwash additive? It claims to help preserve the rainx coat on your windows with regular use.

Is it any good, and do you use it as well as or instead of your usual screenwash?

Further to my previous info, Costco sell this product from time to time and they normally include a glass cleaner as well, can't remember the exact price I paid, but it was in the region of about

JON?! Only 48000 miles!? You've been had mate!

My ombrello is starting to come to the end of its life now, and thats after approximately 30,000 miles.... But I think its more to do with the fact I gave it a rub down with some glass cutter with the aim of removing it entirely... It didn't work and still does the "up the screen" thing in rain at mild speed. :D

I got two more new packets here too. Gonna try one more coat of cutter & polish, then put a fresh coat on.

I used to swear by RainX until I tried Ombrello. Ombrello is far superior and does mean that I can regularly drive in rain without needing to use wipers to see because the rain just beads and streams off.

It costs a little more than RainX but it only takes 30 mins to prep the glass, apply and buff, unlike RainX which took me the best part of 2 hours because you have to spray with water and buff repeatedly. As Jon said it all lasts for ages :D

Anyone want to set up a group buy? I need some for my new car :D

I may give Ombrello a go, but how do I get the Rainx off?

I believe if you use a "degreasing" glass cleaner like Mr Muscle or Windowlene, it should remove it :D

However after using the rainx screenwash additive on its own for a while, it does seem to have built up some rain-repellence.

I add it to my regular screenwash.

Hi to All

I have been using rain-x for years on a number of cars. Of course for the windscreen, you get the bead up and roll off effect at moderate speeds (most cars seem not to need the wipers on above 50Mph). However, that is just the start of it's uses. If you treat side and rear windows, they seem to stay cleaner for longer than untreated. Also useful on glass headlights and mirrors (dont use on plastic mirrors or lenses) again, keeps em cleaner longer and will even aid self cleaning of the headlights in a winter downpour).

I cannot understand why anyone would take 2 hours to rain-x prep a windscreen. Smearing and haze may be a side effect of some waxing compound contaminating the glass or perhaps if the glass was not well dried when the rain-x was applied. I would suggest using a glass cleaning polish or a VERY FINE cerium oxide optical finishing paste to remove any film (the cerium oxide optical grinding paste can also reduce the appearence of fine wiper scratches and wiper wear areas on older screens. It is really hard work though). For treating with rain-x, just clean and very thouroughly dry the glass, apply with a paper towel block and leave for 15 mins. When haze forms, wipe over with a wet cloth, then rinse or hose off as you are washing the car. Silicone squeegee dry, 20 mins work tops.

You must fly round the car to prep and apply it in 15 mins! It takes me 30 mins to do the windscreen and the windows with Mr Muscle! I still prefer Ombrello, after using both, but I wish there was a better supply network in this country as Weathertec are sloooooooow at processing orders!

Chris

Still have the twin pack of Ombrello in my boot. One of these days I'll get round to spending however long it takes to apply it - I'm guessing 2 hours altogether.

Things that concern me are - surely the wipers will just wear it off over time, the amount of preparation required, and the buffing process which seems very complex, and I guess if done wrong leaves you with a streaky coating on your windscreen that you can't get off.
