Tyres/Wheels

Featured Replies

We all know the steel spare on a Furbie vRS is marked "50 mph max". I'm thinking about getting some steel wheels (possibly from all you guys who have now got alloy spares) and fitting some tyres for use in the winter months. This will keep my alloys nice and clean and salt free to use in the summer. Are the steel wheels strong enough for this task or do they have to be run at no more than 50 mph. Any comments guy's :) I know winter is a long way off but i'm planning ahead

Contact Jason, he has a full set of steels which are capable of taking your car beyond 100mph (though not on a public road of course, that would be silly)

If the wheel is a space saver then you definately can't use 4 of them, i would suggest just getting a set of standard steelies off a fabia 1.4 or something, that would also probably be the cheapest option !

but saying that you could probably put any skoda / VW / Seat wheels on aslong as the offset and ET are roughly the same ( i have no doubt someone will correct me on this )

The 50mph restriction applies to the spacesaver tyre, not to steel wheels as a whole, as posted by others. I'm not sure if the wheels are the same as the ones with the spacesaver tyre on - what you want is a set of steel wheels that have been replaced by the owner with alloys. Jason is your man.

I think you should de-badge too and have yourself a street sleeper, could be fun :)

oh wait, i just read your signature...great minds

The sticker's there simply because the tyres have an outside and inside - assuming they're put on the rim accordingly before fitting they're W rated just like your alloys.

I was just thinking if you have steel wheels and no vrs badges people wont realise you have the quick fabia, which is good if you dont like unwanted attention or enjoy surprising people

sorry if i didnt make any sense

My spare is a standard Vrs Steel wheel with a 205/45/16 michelin, what I would like to know is....If I get three more and fit suitable tyres can I run them unrestricted or are they still restricted to 50 mph....... Is it the wheel or the tyre restricted to 50 mph

Non is restricted in reality. That's there to make sure you change your spare as soon as possible. It's like how odl honda models had a tiny ugly yellow 'bicycle' wheel for spare, just to make sure you go and change that tyre.

Very true, the tyre isnt directional and is the same size as the ones on the car. There isnt any reason why you cant use it as a normal tyre.

My contis are directional.

I thought they were aysemetric not directional. But if thats the case then thats the reason why for the conti's. But michelins arent directional.

I had this conversation with my dealer and was told it was due the tyre being directional, and if the spare gets fitted on the 'wrong' side and therefore rotating the wrong way it must be limited to 56MPH. However the Michelin Pilot's aren't directional. He was adamant the Conti's on the showroom car were directional...but they weren't either.

The Bridgestones aren't directional either. Can't see any reason not to drive normally on the steel spare. I suppose the wheels are different weights? Does that make any difference

I doubt Jason will sell his steelies.. what about when he puts his car back to standard :rofl:
