Selling BMW and someone wants to use paypal

Featured Replies

Hi

As title I put my BMW on eBay last night and someone emailed to say he wanted to buy the car for his daughter in russia and pay via paypal and his mother would pick up wen payment clears, I said I wud prefer cash on pick up coz of the paypal fees n he said he would pay the fees? I smell a rat

What do u think?

Nothing strange there until the Russian connection. Cash on collection, though I doubt they'll turn up.

Scam mate I'd say

I instantly thought it was wierd but he might be genuine. If he payed via paypal and I payed it into my account is that good to go. I wud still prefer cash on collection.

What if he goes threw eBay would I be covered then?

I smell a rat

Seems to be a few eBay/PayPal scams going on, you'd probably receive an official looking email from PayPal saying they have received funds from the buyer, in the hope you will just arrange collection without checking the money has actually gone in.

definably a scam. I was almost lured into a similar situation last time I sold a car. You will find that the situation evolves quickly and all of a sudden they want the a courier to collect the car and the paypal transaction goes pear shaped. - avoid like the plague

Definitely a scam, avoid. They may well pay you, but it will be from a hacked paypal account then you'll lose your car and your money when paypal are informed by the actual owner of the account. Accept nothing but cash in hand or a direct bank transfer, a direct bank transfer cannot be recalled.

would ebay's buyer protection scheme leave you open to loosing your car if he pays via paypal if it' some sort of scam, e.g. he pays via paypal, picks up car, claims it's a duffer, gets paypal to refund him, meanwhile your car's on it's may to Ruskie never to be seen again?

All a bit Grimsby to me

I have said I will accept cash on collection still waiting for a response

Sensible decision but suspect you will never hear another word

Either cash on pick up or one-on-one bank transfer confirmed by bank employees. Depending on the amount of money involved. Never, ever anything else.

I've paid for a car via paypal, admittedly it was a few years ago but i spoke to the bloke on phone first before i did it and i paid abit extra to cover paypal fees

I would be cautious about accepting a substantial amount of cash unless I saw it being withdrawn from a bank so that I could be certain that it was not counterfeit. And I would also want to deposit it in a bank soonest to avoid any possibility of being 'relieved' of it having handed over a car.

Complete scam i used to get them daily when selling on ebay / autotrader!

Another favourite is 'im working away right now but i will get a lowloader to collect car from you im out of phone range'

Ignore them! If they cant pick up the phone then its a scam

Bargepole, don't touch with one
