Octavia 3 sports suspension

Recommended Posts

I would hope that 3 months of ownership the suspension is settled.

There's no rubber between any of the springs..... When I first took delivery I was concerned that the factory had fitted normal suspension but the delivery sheet specifically called out all extras added to the car and the suspension was on there.

Then again, 15mm lower isn't a huge difference.

Heres a photo (not great, i admit), but I think it will sufice to see how low it sits and compare with yours ... http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/8091/hsrn.jpg

I've driven our three week old Combi elegance with sport suspension and 18" Golus 1200 km's, and so far I'm not too impressed with the handling. Whether or not this is a torsion beam issue or something else, I don't know. Let's say I'm driving on the motorway and over painted markings (excuse me for the lack of vocabulary) in a curve, and the rear wheels tend to "skip". As if the shock absorbers aren't responsive enough. I can feel the entire car sort of shifts sideways...

I haven't checked the tyre pressure, Maybe that is part of the issue...

.

Sorry to harp on about it yet again, but this "skipping" sounds very much like the behaviour I noticed on a new car I had (not a Skoda) before I got the slightly misaligned suspension geometry corrected.  If you care about the handling and you've spent quite a lot of money on a new car, you might consider it worth spending a comparatively small additional amount of money at an competent and experienced specialist workshop making sure that you really are enjoying the potentially excellent handling which you've paid for.

I was amazed what a large difference a small adjustment made - getting the alignment adjusted from "a bit out of tolerance" to "spot-on, right in the middle of the tolerance band" and absolutely identical either side.  All sorts of odd effects which I had previously just accepted, completley disappeared.  The car became totally predicatble, felt more "planted" on the road and was a delight to drive.

I suspect that sports suspension and large diameter wheels with low-profile tyres make accurate wheel alignnnment / suspension geometry (and yes, as you mention, spot-on tyre pressures!) even more crucial.

Just my thoughts ... but based on experience.

Sorry for ressurecting the thread:), but if anybody is interested.......today I have exchanged the oem sport suspension with KW Street Comfort coilovers....the first impressions are great, night and day difference

compared to the OEM sport.......the car was even lowered more than I wanted initialy  (about 25mm lower than sport, and 40mm than regular,  i will probably raise it a bit, cause i often tend to travel full), but the ride is of totally different character. It is much less harsh, the bumps are absorbed fluently, no more hard chrashing feeling through the spine, Its by no means a cruiser, it still has 18" wheels, but now its totally clear that OEM sport suspension was mismatched shocks and strings.....the in-car noise over the road imperfections is greatly reduced, all in all the car rides miles better than it used to. Really didnt think it would make this much difference, i even reduced the tyre pressure to 2.0 psi with the OEM to reduce the crashing and now im riding on the normal 2.3 pressure.

I have 3 days to test it and than I will go back to the shop and make all the fine tuning, set the height and do the balance and wheels geometry.  If anybody is interested I will keep them posted.

Cheers :D

Having come from a Bilstein B12 kit on a Octy II PD140 Estate (so the 55mm struts) and 18" Zeniths, to a Octy III with 18" Golus and standard suspension I can tell very little difference in stiffness and ride comfort between the two.

The standard Octy III suspension is a lot stiffer than I was expecting, I was expecting to find it wallowy, but it stays flat in the corners like the B12s did.

It is slightly smoother at low speeds than the B12 kit, and has very slightly more give when cornering hard.

I have the sport suspension and 18 wheels and I'm dissatisfied with this comfort.

Soon I'll ride a 16 steel wheels with the Goodyear Efficientgrip performance in 205 55 r16. These wheels are supposed to be silent.

I hope that with the highest profile of these tires, their lower profile width and less sporty can improve comfort.

Was thinking of installing these myself when mine arrives but read this today in the owner's manual:

? A change to the vehicle's wheel suspension, including the use of non-ap- proved wheels and tire combinations, can alter the functioning of the airbag system - risk of accident and fatal injury!

NO really..... dont believe that, its Bull**** all the way. the cars can be delivered om 19" wheels and sportsuspension. So just go on and buy what you want, Think that if this was true, the aftermarked for cars would die in 5 days.

Might be, but let say your airbag misfires and causes injuries or even an accident. According to the manual you will have tough time proving that faulty sensor and not your modified suspension caused it.

I simply don't believe in that statement. Apparently neither does Skoda since you can have it fitted at factory. So... they put something on the car that makes important safety features fail..? I wouldn't think so...

Agrees totally with Aknedude! So what about the text in owner's manual then? Well if you read carefully it says. " non-approved wheels and tire combinations". I would say the key word is "non-approved".

Just go for it is my opinion!!   I have it and it makes the car i) look much better!! ii) feel better!

Actually I completely agree. I have no problems with the factory fitted ones but would rather go for KW or Eibach but am not sure what does getting it "approved" actually mean. Will probably go with the factory ones for start as I can order them with XDS and then change to something else if the ride is no good as OP suggests.

I want to share my view after changing the golus 18 steel wheels of 16 inches.

Now the car is more comfortable, faster and uses less fuel, but the suspension ... I still noticing a little dry, or at least makes a lot of noise when passing through any bumps or messed asphalt.

Perhaps most convenient is not to think about it and pray that with the passing of the milles probably softened suspension.

If this moment never comes, will be the time to consider the suspension kw, but I worry that the investment is not worth it and I do not know any shop specializing in them.

Everything I have heard so far about the factory sport suspension was extremely negative. Even my dealer advised me against it.

I have only driven one that already had 18.000km on it and I found it manageable so wouldn't know if it actaully loosens up but if my

car behaves similarly after 15.000km I'll be happy.

If you want more comfort in your car just buy H&R springs. The stock (sport)springs are noisy over bumps and not very conf..

"Might be, but let say your airbag misfires and causes injuries or even an accident. According to the manual you will have tough time proving that faulty sensor and not your modified suspension caused it."

Listen here. In the US. they put a Sticker on a microwave   "Dont put cats and other live animals in the microwave" This is just as stupid.

Maybe you dont so much about cars, and thats okay. Me, I work with cars every day and i can asure you that its no problem putting other springs and wheels on your new car.

I can just replace springs (as I do not need to change complete coilovers)?

The KW coilovers are TUV certified, which means that german regulatory body, in charge of determining and certifying all the necessery features of products put out on german market, determined

that the KW product in no way compromises the cars safety in any way......the germans are pretty strict about such things, and if something is TUV certified, no need to worry about it....

Skoda just wants to earn extra by selling "original" parts, that most certainly can be subpar to parts produced by specialised producers......skodas original suspension is, no doubt about it,

a cheaper product than the KW suspension, really dont think that they spend 1200-1500€ on OEM suspension....

Just replace springs thats it. remember to check you cars weight, there is two different springs one for gasoline and one for Diesel. and check if your car has multilnk rear suspension
