Head studs, never by a head bolt again.

Featured Replies

I was reading a copy of diesel power (us magazine for diesel tuning). They had a top 10 ways to bullet proof your engin. The suggested head studs to replace head bolts. Had been having a little difficulty with stretch bolts stretching to much with big turbo and full nos.

I went on to APR website to look up and ordered the ones for VAG 1.9 and 1.6 diesels. They cost £205. Still this is the 7th set and at £40 a set, it adds up. When I got them they were were for non PD 1.9s. APR don't do ones for PD.

The guys at Coordsport were really helpful in sorting out the correct ones. They are shipping from US. The new ones were only £170.

When I get them and make sure they fit I will post part numbers.

Don't forget the import duty and VAT and handling fee unless they are samples or a gift *hint* :)

Have had no issues at my power level using the PD150 headbolts. No head-lift at all.

Have you changed the head gasket? Or are you just whacking in head bolts?

Gasket really needs changing

no ****!

Yes... But is it to the OP?

Fair point but if he's looking at arp's then id like to think he knows this

Having worked in a engine machine shop you'd be surprised the amount of people who haven't changed headgaskets on car's when things such as this happens. Even know some garage's to reuse head gaskets when cambelts have snapped, but worst of all I recall one garage owner not replacing a bent valve after a cambelt failure as his fix for it was 'reving it to redline as soon as I start it to straighten the valve'

Nice one!

My favourite is during an oil change

Drop the oil

Then rev nuts off engine to get all the old oil out!

Lol

No need to import the head studs, Darkside do a set for Pd engines - Not cheap though!

I've done this on a Renault scenic. Got nothing to lose by trying it and worked a treat, still going. To be honest though it wasn't bent at high speeds it hadn't been locked off with tools when a new belt was put on

The 150 arl bolts are better :)

Are you serious? The potential for the valve guide breaking and dropping into the combustion chamber and putting a hole in a piston out weighs the cost of a replacement valve roughly £3+VAT plus the cost of cutting the seat around £4 V's a new engine?

The guy who did it couldn't afford to pay me to take the head off and sort it so was going to scrap the car so I timed it up correctly got it warm then drove it on the limiter. Gave it a oil and filter change and its still running fine 4 years on, like I said he had nothing to lose he was going to scrap it but in the end I saved him his car. Obviously wouldn't of done it if he wasn't on about scrapping it lol

Yes it gets new head gaskets. New timing belt every 3 rd time head is off.

The price from coordsport was inclusive of everything.

Have you had the head skimmed to make sure it is flat? Any signs of failure on the gasket also? If it seems the gasket is the weak link going along a cometic gasket route may help.
