Poorly aircon

Featured Replies

Aircon sounds like a leaking gas canister when running.

61 vRS, has it died over the winter?

Dodgy compressor or condensor.

Or you have a leak.

When the gas gets low they make some strange noises.

Your under warranty, get it booked in before more damage is done.

Had it on yesterday for a few minutes, didn't sound too well so looks like it's gonna have to go in.

Mine did this & I suspected the compressor - however, I was (relatively) pleasantly surprised to discover that it had run low on gas & is now nice & cold (and quiet) again.

I'd get it looked at asap though - like Silver1011 says, you don't want to risk causing any more damage.

Good luck.. :)

Not using it all until until it's been looked at.

Shame, as we are going away this weekend and sods laws says it will be nice and warm! Although

I can't complain if the weather is nice. The kids will have to roast in the back!

Just curious but did you have a leak too? Or did the re-gas cure the problem?

I was led to believe that the A/C system is sealed and that the only way the gas can escpae is if there is a leak?

Therefore a re-gas is only a short-term solution until the leak is discovered and fixed?

Hello,

I believe there could well be a leak somewhere - the garage know the car & have put dye in the system to trace any leakage.

A quick squint under the bonnet has not uncovered any tell-tale colouring (yet) but I'll take it back to them in a month or so, so's they can have a proper look for any traces.

To be honest, I'm just glad it's not a total failure of the compressor as I'd originally suspected - they're notorious for going kaput I believe..

You won't see the dye, it is visible under UV light only.

Hello,

The noises you are talking are something like these ones?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXFm6i9Xfc0

My car always do this sound when the ignition is on, with or without air con switched on.

Is this normal? Gas problem? Compressor problem?

My father has a Superb that makes the same sound, but both aircon's work very well.

Thanks,

Regards,

Tiago Matias

Tiago, the noise mine made was more a grumbling one from the engine bay accompanied by a kind of hissing, gurgling noise from the vents - not the knocking sound as heard in your video - not sure what's causing that I'm afraid.

As for the leakage dye, I'll have to dig out my black lights I guess..!

Yes they are sealed systems. Some leakage occurs over a number of years through the rubber hoses which requires a re-gas, but they are essentially sealed systems.
