Been away from the forum for 2 weeks cruising the med.... So much to catch up on especially regarding the vrs ! The journeys to Southampton and back gave me fastest and longest runs in the Octy thus far and fully loaded it managed 49.5 mpg indicated which translates to approx 46 mpg actual which given the brisk progress made, I'm very pleased with. The Octy was a quiet and relaxing place to be in, sport mode allowed slower traffic to passed with ease and the sat nav automatically diverted me off the M3 and around the gridlock, which ensured I didn't miss the ship :)

Nice review of the car, I hope I get close to your MPG out of my DSG.

I like the cream interior, I have it on my Fabia but due to the kids I decided sense had to prevail and I just had the standard black Elegance seats.

Still waiting its arrival.

I'm beginning to wish I'd saved the £2k and opted for the TSI 140 as my mpg is only marginally better at 55mpg, but now that the cooler weather has arrived it's nearer to 52mpg on recent fill ups. I think some of the buzzes and rattles I'm experiencing are also related to the increased vibration from the CR lump which is obviously less refined, I just never expected the real world economy difference to be so marginal against the new TSI as compared with my old CR 170 Superb II which used to average 50-52mpg vs SWMBOs 1.8TSI Octy II which averages around 39-41 mpg when I use it for my commute, I still expected there would be about 20% better economy with the CR over the TSI even though I knew the official CR mpg figures would never be attainable.

Effectively, the difference of 4mpg, keeping the maths simple equates to 8%, taking the difference in fuel cost currently 6-7ppl more for diesel, so approx 5%, leaves only 3% saving on fuel with the diesel. I cover approx 22-24k per year averaging about £2700 in fuel costs at current prices so diesel is only saving me about £80 per annum. I expect some of the difference will be recouped come trade in, so lets say an optimistic £750-£1000 more for the equivalent diesel in p.ex after 4 yrs, but that still means I would have lost out and would need to keep the CR for over 10 years to pay back the initial extra outlay, but by then the difference in p.ex would be less so prob the pay back is nearer to 15 years! Oh, and that assumes I don't need a couple of DPF sensors along the way!

TSI for me next! Only downside is the new TSI is belt driven, no worse than the CR but SWMBOs 1.8 TSI160 is chain driven, so that's a definite keeper bearing in mind she has only done 24k since new in 2009

Have to take it all back, starting to think that a TSi Elegance DSG estate might be the right replacement for my Blackline when the time comes.

one of the biggest issues I have with my Mk2 vRS is its poor ride on anything other than decent surfaces; given that ultimately its used as a family car its not ideal. Standard suspension and 17" wheels the remedy I suspect.

The combination of an economical but still half quick petrol engine, 7 speed DSG, lots of toys and an exterior thats not remotely "look at me" is really pressing all the buttons for me.....just amazed a little 140hp 1.4 gives the diesel vRS a run for its money in performance but can still produce 50+ mpg economy. My old Fabia vRS only returned 32 over 11k miles!

Think these days TDI only really makes sense for economy where mega annual miles are involved, or like me your car has Haldex 4x4 and there is a noticeable jump in fuel and tax costs by going TSI 4x4.
