Excessive road noise and wear a bit like this, but only on the inside. I think this is sawtoothing?

So I get new tyres, following a service (I had not noticed this wear, as it was only on inside of both rears. Guy doing service says it is common and I need 4 wheel allignment (he is a vag speciallist and sees this often)

I get new tyres and take for a 'hunter 4 wheel allignment' where the guy says the fronts are out, but the rear is spot on and doesn't need doing.

So I am a bit confused. What causes this odd wear, other than allignment. Service indicated front shocks, but rear did not need changing.

Could it be the rears were unbalanced? I had also been using the max pressure on the tyrewall to inflate and doing them up to 48psi, not knowing it should be a lot less. Could it just be my own stupidity?

I do 3000. Miles per month on motorways if that has a bearing on it.

New tyres are much quieter than the pzeros and b rated for wet braking and also efficiency, although budget meant I got cheapies this time round.

Any ideas?

Excess pressure will cause more wear in the centre of the tyre. It really does look like the alignment is out. Did you get a print out after it was done?

No, but I watched it all on the screen as he did it. I did not get a printout, as he did not do it or charge me for it as it was all green on the settings.

All green doesn't mean set up properly, it just means within tolerance. If all the settings are all over the place then this could be the cause of your problems. The tyres wouldn't wear like that if all was OK. It's possible the rear shockers are shot, but you need to know that the geometry is set up properly.

well, he seemed to know his stuff and seemed the type that would've hapilly took my cash if he could. he was honest the front needed doing and showed me on the screen, but was adamant the rear was spot on. he said he got the front bang on too to exact specs.

You don't need to tell, at that mileage they are well past their best. Might pass an MoT but all that means is they aren't leaking and provide some damping.

That sawtoothing is caused by incorrect rear camber settings. What was the camber reading on each rear corner?

You can bounce on each corner of the car and see that it returns and stops. If it keeps bouncing up and down it's a sign they're worn. It isn't so easy to tell using that method though.

Look at the shocks and check for leaks. If they're covered in oil they're no good. Slight misting is OK.

The other way is to remove them and see how they feel.

You could have someone follow you down the road. If they are totally gone, the wheels will be bouncing about. You might expect to feel that in the car though.

As andyvee says, at 120000 miles they'll be past their best.

don't know, not even sure what the settings should be. he was adamant it didn't need doing though. I guess I need to try somewhere else then....

have to say though, a new set of tyres is infinitely quieter than before. like driving on silk...

For now, until they go the same way.

Get it checked again and get a print out. Toe and camber need to be bang on the recommended values, not just within the allowable range, and need to be equal on both sides on the same axle. A good place will check all the bushes for excessive wear as well.

I had exactly the same thing happen to mine on my VRS TDi LE to two sets of rears. I thought I had a wheel bearing gone with the noise it made. I was told by the dealer that due to the sports suspension set up on the VRs combined with lots of motorway miles the tyres didn't achieve even wear. Ideally it was better for the tyres to have all round usage i.e. motorway and back lane blasts.

The last i saw ware similar to this on my old Vectra (granted a different car but a my give you another angle)

It turn out to be a suspension bush that had failed.

100% the alignment is out, excessive negative camber and toe out, but the tyre wear is questionable . The tyre even though running stressed with the alignment, should have warn evenly on the inside edge and not with high and low spots which will have caused the road noise / wheel bearing type of sound .

Get your tracking done ! 4 wheel alignment and check the dampers haven't gone soft.
