Well, the digital camera didn't work out quite as well as I'd hoped. The image quality is bearable (just). Certainly I don't see myself giving up my 35mm SLR for a digital any time soon.

Nice to see the pics. Never seen so many Octy's outside a dealer! The only way to get better pictures from digital is to get more megapixels! I never thought I'd convert from SLR, until I saw what a 3 megapixel camera could do. Hence my 3.3 Megapixel Nikon 950!

Im looking to buy a digi cam with my hard earned pre xmas overtime , so what should i go for .... is 2mill pixels enough or should i look for 3 mill or above....really dont want to spend more than 200 quid as im no David Bailey (kids...ask your parents..lol) but i dont want to waste cash on a duffer....what resolution was the cam used on the pix in this thread??

I use the fujifilm 4900Zoom.

The important thing for a successful digi camera ownersip is knowing what you want to do with it. To this end the 4900 has a 6 optical and adaptor plates can be obtained for filters, wide lens etc. Fuji do a wierd thing *will not try to remember or explain* to increase there pixel count. for me it's fine maxing out at 1600x1200 res in jpg's and then one higher in tiff format at about 12mb per pic; which I never use.

Consider:

Lens, Pixel count, application ie web or printing.

Optical zoom (digital zoom is a waste IMHO as the same result can be had on a PC editing package)

Storage, if your out and about, media adds up, personally I would avoid sony for this reason. The fuji uses smart media and are easily lost...

Connectivity, as above, if you travel with a laptop or usb etc.

Battery life, only negative part of the fuji, is it relies upon li-ion packs and not AA cells etc so when I'm half way round the Alp's I'm knackered with a flat pack.

Other factors: external flash mount (mounted flashes are useless on these things if your serious about indoor work)

Dislay, view finder (4900 is a see what you take not off set, but pay the price in batt life as I power a lcd instead of a lens)

All in all I'm really chuffed with the camera and TBH it's prob as good as home users need. If you want I can send you some *looks for a good one* pictures of landscapes, action :lol: etc etc

Just let me know as there 700+kb each, so I'll pull a quality selection.

The other one I was looking at and looking back should of got is a cannon one, cannot recall the model, but had a flip lcd screen on the read and could take a IBM microdisc, it was avery very nice camera but 100 more than the fuji at the time (2+years ago).

The 4900 in it's day was about as close to an slr as I could find. I have not used it as an SLR as much as I would of hoped for; instead relying on the point and click functionailty. But it is nice to be able to fiddle with exposure and field depth occasionally.

When the battery packs give up on this model (I have three) I will look at fashoining external power supplies, currently the three packs offer me about 6 hours of picture taking which is alot of work. But still very short compared to others on the market today...ho hum.

Best bet, find a copy of what digital camera, a for reviews and b online vendors saving you alot over currys/dixons prices and mupperty at the counter.

Lol Baaheed....I wouldnt know how to use an SLR camera either , but then again i dont need to coz all i 'phot' are cars and trains , im not trying to get owt published! I guess ill have a look round the shops to find the cheapest digicam i can find with optical zoom and 3 mill pixels , maybe test it out on the car over the hols!
