Old Polo GTI / daytime headlights double-header

Featured Replies

Both things on the way into work this morning, so going to put them in the same thread!

1. It was murky when I set off for work this morning, but cleared up as I was driving along. But I still had my lights on, and by gum, it's a great way to clear the outside lane when you're in a hurry - no 60mph dawdlers in my way this morning!

2. Maybe Josh may be able to comment on this, but the performance of the old Polo GTI that was in front of me was frankly pants. It had even had its exhaust done, so obvioulsy some money had been spent on performance mods. 50-70 up the sliproad in, er, well I don't know 'cos I'd got onto the motorway and had already passed him by then. VERY slow, and franly a bit disappointing. For the huge mark-up of the new Polo GTI over Fabia and Ibiza, I hope VW have come up with something a bit better than their last effort...

The old polo wasnt that slow tbh. it did only have 125bhp compared with the fabia but i would imagine it was lighter then the fabia. im sure 0-60 was around 8.5. fairly nippy but not extremely fast.

what makes you think it was trying to race you? it might have been a GTi lookalike too.

 nice thread ;)

 nice thread :)

The fact that he cut me up as I was trying to pass makes me think he was having a go, and as for the lookalike theory, it had the xenons as well as the alloys and the front bumper, so I reckon it was kosher. Maybe he was just getting in my way out of sheer arsey-ness...

As for thread quality, what can I say? Laziness... :D

Had some guy do that (well, he tried...) to me joining the A34. Stupid g*t was in the left-hand lane, which ends up going to the same road, a little further down, and decided that instead of checking whether a car was next to him in the right-hand lane, he'd just indicate whilst 2/3rds of my car were next to him already. Up to this point all was well, unfortunately he didnt appreciate my horn blast as he nearly pushed me out of the right-hand lane in front of the lorry.

My decision was to plant it and make sure that I would not cut up the lorry driver, as slamming on the brakes wouldn't have got me safely behind the lorry anyway :(

The other guy was a little annoyed and gestured quite a bit, but then it was his fault for not looking, being in the wrong lane and unnecessarily attempting to drive over the top of my car.... As soon as I had gone past he then forced the lorry to brake sharply as he did the usual 'straight into fast lane' thing, again not spotting a car in that lane doing probably slightly illegal figures...

Pretty much decided to leave him behind me by then, don't like being near people who are likely to cause accidents...

yeah he might of been trying then, who knows. fabia feels quicker but i was just going on figues, ive never timed how quick they both are but they are both quick in different ways(driven and family currently own both types)

good thread as in not a dangerous or illiegal move

good thread as in not a dangerous or illiegal move

I see your point, although in my defence it was a two-lane sliproad (M60 clockwise > M62 Westbound), and I was in the right-hand lane long before he was. My original point was that he was accelerating up the sliproad at a slower rate than me, so I moved out to pass him and then he pulled out right in front of me and just SAT THERE. So I couldn't pass until I'd got onto the motorway, and to be fair I always check over my shoulder when joining a main road - unlike the drivers I saw in Portugal when I was over there  . Anyway, I think I've done this thread to death already...

yeah i know what you mean mate, it wasnt a dig on my part. some drivers can be so frustrating and pointlessly get in your way.

Regarding point one, I always have my lights on when I drive... See and be Seen was ROSPA's motto when I was a kid...

The Polo GTi isn't that quick really... It's fairly light, so it's got 120 bhp/tonne, but it only has 115 lbft, so mid range acceleration is pretty poor... As is it's 0-100 time.

That's why I stuck a 50 shot of Nitrous on mine lol.

Am I right in thinking the Lupo GTI got the same engine as the Polo GTI?

Yep, it's the same lump but different engine code iirc... Nothing too different though... I believe they're like the later Polo GTi's (ie more environmentally friendly).

Same BHP and Torque, but you get a 6 speed box on the later lupos.

A mate used to have a Lupo GTI. Although it had quick throttle response, it lacked the power in the midrange & top end.

I found myself revving the knackers of it, much to the disgust of my mate! :D

I think I scared him a couple of times as I threw into some corners!
