Try an app called network info II, and sent the info it generates to Orange.

I did the same to tmob after being fobbed off, and surprisingly my problems disappeared after several attmpts at resetting my account, manually putting the settings in my phone (despite them being there and correct), its because I'm on Sim only I should switch to a 24 month contract and them insisting I factory reset my phone - no fricking way, pass me to disconnections was my reply.

  • Bet you'd still prefer to have consistent, more wide-ranging 3G coverage though hey?!

my wife found a bargain on that phone SIM free this week. Asda direct online. Can't remember which one was cheaper, but if you look for an S3 mini and an SIII mini one of them was £50 cheaper .

  • Android is losing it's shine for me. Far too consumerist. I like to run my devices how I want not how Google or Facebook want me to. When my Nexus is out of warranty it'll be getting rooted it.

Will get on to that right now thanks (using Wi-Fi as I have no alternative..................still grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

Today my GPRS started to play up. Bloody Orange keep fiddling with stuff.......grrrrrrrrrr I fail to understand how living in Stretford, which is a built up area and also being in the second biggest city in Britain, I can't get 3G. I also can't get the S4 from EE, even though they said it was in stock. Might see if they have an HTC One (I've had several HTC phones and love them). The deal they are offering is really strong though, so I need a bit more patience :(

I eventually went for the HTC One - it is awesome (if not a little pricey SIM free). I'm with Orange at the moment and we don't have a 4G signal in our small part of the country yet (the normal 3G service is very good so I'm not bothered about swapping). I was in a London suburb last week and could not get a data connection at all though - absolutely shocking in the capital city - whether this is due to replacing 3G masts for 4G I don't know but if it is, it doesn't bode well for future none LTE equipped phones or monthly plans.

I'll be going SIM only in November so it will give me plenty of time to research best deals/coverage by then.

Galaxy S3 is probably the best bet, but if you want bug free I still say you can't get smoother than iOS

iOS bug free?? seriously?? Get your head out the bucket of Apples there.

Android on a nexus 4 is the smoothest software you will ever come across.

I couldn't justify a sim free £5-600 phone its silly.

That's interesting. Wonder if Orange have c0cked it up? this moving masts for "more even coverage" might be a smoke screen. Or there again perhaps its just to facilitate the better coverage of 4G. :D

Btw the coverage checker says I have good 3G and even Orange said I had good 3G until they got on to their Tech apartment.

That makes no sense.

Nexus4 is perfect for me. No OS customisation, just a fast Android experience. Plus access to the latest updates is a real boon for me.

Great screen, decent battery life (relatively speaking compared with the competition and performance on offer) and doesn't seem to lag at all. A very, very good GPS chip and accuracy too, if that's important to you.

Yes I'd have preferred a removable battery and an expansion slot, but c'est la vie. I just went with the 8GB version as don't actually need to carry around large amounts of data on my phone. I have other ways of doing that.

Getting my S4 tomorrow, so hopefully in about a fortnight I will have it up and running :D Wonder if it will pair with my car properly :( :D I'd forgotten about the joys of trying to beat a new phone into submission...........sigh

Was hoping to have my s4 by the end of last week, unfortunately o2's computer system has broke my account meaning I can't upgrade till they figure out what wrong button they've pressed and delete my order :(

+1 for the Nexus 4. Fast and relatively futureproof as you can be sure of getting Android updates as soon as they are released.

but needs 32gb upgrade soon.

Not sure if you sorted this in the end, but an S3 Mini might be a good compromise phone.

Has a micro SD slot, isn't too big, is plenty fast enough and works nicely.

Got my S4 a few hours ago and now have it up to date and running. probably spend the next few weeks tweaking though :( Anyhoo the speed of Goole sync was astounding! I have over 550 contacts, most with email and multiple phone numbers and many with address and photos linked to them. the sync took a few seconds. Much much quicker than any other Android phone I have owned. also I had forgotten I had synced all sorts of other stuff with Google and about 30 Apps also download in the next few seconds. Incredible and all my settings were saved (it even remembered where I was in Bad Piggies and Angry Birds :D) Anyhoo after 20 mins of updates :( and a lot of fettling with the home pages and settings I am nearly happy. not tried to sync with my car yet, but the phone itself flies along and the speaker is a big improvement on my previous HTC Sensation XE. Oh, the screen is pretty good too :)

Popped down to my local Currys (White City Manchester) to grab a new SD card and did a 4G speed test whilst there........................

Ping: 55ms

Download 23mb/s

Upload: 12mb/s

Got home (Stretford, Manchester) where I have discovered I not only have no 3G, but also no 4G and so I checked my speed again again

EE better get a mast switched on near me soon, or I think I will be falling out with them soon :(

Just need swmbo to try one first as not getting crap for another phone she doesn't get on with for being slow etc.

Last night she said she just wants a phone to make calls and texts. Showed her one on the Web last night and first things she asked were will she still have all her apps, and will she still have email, maps, camera........

WOMEN!

You will get that speed if you are in a 4g area. Its how I got released from my contract.

If you are hooked onto a T-Mobile 3G transmitter you will be fine - Orange however is another matter.

You can easily test.

If you are on Orange, do a network search and choose the first EE in the list. If you are on Tmobile chose the second EE in the list. This will connect you to the Orange transmitter.....Then do a speed test and watch the shocking speeds. Do the opposite and you will get up to 22MBPS.

Thanks. I already used the rubbish 3G reception (ie none existent since they removed my local mast 6 weeks ago) as the bargaining chip for a 4G phone and as I posted earlier, got a pretty good deal. I was told that 4G should be available in my house, albeit with a low signal strength. They assured me that this would improve over time. Unfortunately there is no 4G at all in my immediate area. But I think I will live with it for now, owing to the- free S4, early upgrade (10 months early) unlimited calls and texts, 50mms, 16gb data and the full phone clone, all for £52,75. I have been bought and I sold my soul :D

Couldn't find anywhere with a Motorola RAZR I, but she tried an S3 Mini and seemed to be impressed.

So looks like I'll be ordering one from Asda who seem the cheapest reliable retailer

I was at an industry meeting yesterday and a guy from EE said they would only roll out 4G further if the taxpayer pays them subsidy for doing it.

They must of realised not many people will pay extra for what is really a gimmick, most people are fine with the normal 3g speed.

Mrs is going back to tmobile and the contract deals are appalling compared to SIM only

Three will be doing 4G at no extra charge, eventually.

No he realised just how much of the country doesn't yet have 3g

I have a JCB smartphone. Mrs G bought it for my 40th.

Because for a smartphone it's tough. I could use it to smash up an iphone,

but tbh it does suffer from being heavy and thick as a result of the strengthening.

IP67 rated it can survive a half hour submerged in up to a metre deep water.

Ideal for my line of work. The camera is very slow on it though :(

I've never had a smart phone before, so even though as smartphones go

it is far from the most modern thing available, to me it does loads more than my

last nokia push button toughphone which was made in 2007.

So to me it's very modern. :p

Just been in central Manchester and the 4G download speed is just over 25mb/s and the upload is 18mb/s. Quite quick really :D The best bit is even though it was pretty busy, as yet not to many people are using it, so it stays quick :) Sure this will be slowly eroded over time though
