Thoughts on ownership after 6 months?

Featured Replies

I bought a DSG Blackline in middle October and have only covered 4000 miles. As this is my first Skoda I wondered what other people, new to the brand thought about the octavia after 6 months of ownership? I have had no issues that require a return to the dealers and other that put fuel in its been fine. I have thought briefly about trading it in already on a new focus ST that caught my eye but managed to keep the head and walk away :whew:

Overall i still like the look of the car and performance is enough to keep it interesting for now, as for mods there are none i'd do as of yet, its all good. May consider a tuning box/remap later this year..

Still like walking to the car in the underground carpark at my work, looks very stealth in the gloomy light.

Blackline, 7000 miles. Just over 6 months.

Love it. Handles great, loads of performance. Looks stunning in blue. Still smile as I approach it.

Just treating it to a 'Carlack' clean/seal, then a layer of Colinite 476S.

All standard, probably keep it that way until its 3 years have passed.

Last car was BMW 320d, only thing I miss is the uber low seating position, but as a whole package for a family Skoda wins every time for me.

Not my first VRs but I do like the black wheels and leather interior. Way too many miles on it at 9.5K and already going in for it's first service. I have taken off the Octavia wording and will be fitting the new style badges.

Still enjoying the Vrs after nearly 6 months, just under 3500miles

Warranty: Cars been back once for the whistling noise at speed, and some wind noise from the passenger door.

Mods: well I've done quite a few

Plans: still in the process of fitting heated seat, Park assist and RVC is also on the to do list.

Hi mate. I got mine the same time as you. We were constantly on the massive Blackline thread on here! Lol.

If you remember, not long after getting mine, I got cold feet. Buyers remorse you could call it.

6 months, and 6000 miles later?

Love my Blackline.

Nothing has gone wrong apart from the reversing sensors that don't like getting washed. They seem to fix themselves though once they've dried out after a few hours.

I will say though its not a comfy car for me to drive long distance. My backside and left foot go numb from that chuffing drivers seat.

I can honestly say that the black alloys grew on me. I love them now.

The admiring looks from loads of people still surprises me. The VRS is a handsome car that seems to appeal to many levels.

The cruise control is lovely. The satnav is handy. The economy is great. We averaged 52 mpg on a trip to York yesterday heeding the speed limits. Performance? I'm still sure the standard VRS I test drove was quicker than mine! But it's quick enough for what it is.

By the way. I had a new ST. Bought one in December. Got rid after about 8 weeks. Terrible car in my opinion.

Now back in my FOURTH Focus RS. Get one of those instead.

3 months and 3k later in Blackline hasnt yet put a foot wrong.

Sat Nav, DAB and Bluetooth all nice to have. DSG is generally very good but gear selection in drive is a bit shoddy and it lacks smoothness at low speeds....Also hate the way it goes into 1st when coming to a stop in manual mode, makes the car very lurchy. Still dont think id trade it for a manual though as its amazing when really pushing on.

Leather seats are nice but shame they arent heated, also still not convinced they'll stand the test of time all that well...I dont tend to own cars all that long so hopefully wont become an issue. I think id have preferred the black alcantara trim myself and stand by the fact id have gone for that on a factory order.

Refinement wise its not too bad, not as hushed as my old MK6 Golf but its fine. Drives great and stops brilliantly. Diesel is very good but not very quick until you get past the first few gears, also found the fuel economy whilst quite adequate hasnt blown me away, gets about 46/47 on a good run which I guess is pretty good for a 170hp diesel. I think if id had my time again Id have probably gone for a TSi and let the fuel card get rinsed as whist I dont really miss the car, I am starting to miss the punch and flexibility of the twincharger set up in my old vRS Fabia. The one and only area the car doesnt have one up on the Fabia.

Ita an estate so extremely pleased with how versatile it is, glad now I didnt buy a hatch.

If the pricing is right on the MK3 I may well own another but am already thinking I might go the MK7 GTi Performance Pack route next time and accept the lesser practicality.

I'm happy with my blackline after 6 months and 3000 miles even tho it has been back to the dealers for various faults including needing a new steering control module, new heater control module (still waiting to be fixed), new plastic stone chip guard on the passanger side just in front of the rear wheel, new aerial base for the sat nav (not solved the problem so its going back in again) and a few other bits that i can't remember at the minute.

The only other thing that i don't like is how quickly the front tyres are wearing but them again that is just down to my lead foot as my fuelly signature below will testify. I only know of one other person on here that has a lower average mpg than me for a cr vrs....

My Blackline was averaging 54mpg on the way back from Birmingham to South Wales last week, my last CR was doing about the same. I agree that the VRs is heavy on tyres I changed my fronts at 8K again no different to my 2010 VRs.

Me by any chance? :giggle:

I have to admit that I'm very happy with mine - even after the horrific first 7 weeks of ownership! For the price it can't be beaten for what it offers - it's not as quick as the petrol but it's a reasonably economical (although not mine), fairly quick, practical, sporty(ish) family car.

I had to have it in blue, and I had to have the DSG as that was all that was left in the hatchbacks and the wife didn't want another estate. I wasn't sure about the blue, or the black wheels but they soon grew on me and I think that they look awesome - in fact washed and waxed it attracts quite a few looks from passers-by which is quite unusual. DSG? Not sold on it completey but I'm a bit of a control freak and like manual gearboxes. That said, it's nice and relaxing around town although that change into 1st when slowing doesn't make for the smoothest of stops!

I'm certainly not planning on swapping any time soon which is saying something as my last two cars I managed to keep for about 7 months each!

Mine is not DSG, could that be the economy issue?

I've had my BL since October, bought it on a bit of a whim when I had a 1.4 SE plus which I liked but didn't tick all the boxes for me. Absolutely no regrets. It's had nothing go wrong with it so I'm made up in that department. The 2 lower ratios on the manual gearbox don't work IMO, especially when combined with 350nm but 3rd on is a hoot. I got 51mpg back from Cornwall fully loaded, which was impressive as I wasn't in miss Diasy mode. The boot is epic and the only real problem I've had is I can't stop cleaning it. Best car on the market for the money IMO. I'm even getting better MPG than smaller petrol engine Skodas. Best bit for me is the huge torque wave, makes driving a joy whether you just want to gently plod along or get a wiggle on. I love it.

3 months, 8k, average around 34mpg over that distance, and it's flying as a petrol turbo should. Doesn't make me want to open the curtains every morning, but it's a a Q car hoot to drive, especially as an estate.

Me by any chance? :giggle:

It wasn't you that i was thinking of. I'm on my phone so i can't see if you have a fuelly signature to see what you get but i can't remember the name of the guy whe was getting less than me but if i remember right he was getting 37 mpg average. I think that he has sold it and got a petrol vrs instead now.

How much do you get out of yours?

Fuelly is averaging it at 39.5 mpg at the moment which is not great but it does get a lot of town use as well.

It was probably me, I had one of the early CR vRS's; I averaged 37mpg in mine and saw 50mpg once when I drove like an old woman. I did then have a petrol vRS but that went last year. Now enjoying low 20s in my R! Having said that I got 32mpg last week driving at 70-74mph (gps indicated) from Newcastle to Blackpool.

I do think that the DSG hits economy a lot more than the official figures would suggest, especially for town use. That said, I think that I sometimes see people with high 40's as their overall average and become a little disappointed, but I remind myself that mine is actually mainly doing quite short urban journeys with the odd longer run thrown in. I also like to experience the torque & power which doesn't always help the economy!

The best I've managed over a tankful is about 45mpg - again mixed driving but quite a bit of A road usage so I suppose it's not too bad really - nothing I have is ever particularly economical so I have to put it down to my driving "style".

Yeah it was you. I just sort of remembered on one of the petrol v diesel threads that someone commented that they only got 37 mpg from the diesel and i was like how is that possible. Now i know. It is just so damn fun putting your foot down in the vrs (within the speed limit and when safe to do so). My mate has a mk2 focus st and he can't believe that i am only averaging just over 40 mpg. He keeps on telling me that he can get 33 mpg out of the st but i keep on telling him that it i was to drive the way that he does to get that then i'd get over 50 mpg but he doesn't seem to understand bless him.

Right when i get home at the end of the month i'll have to try and get my average down by 3.5 mpg to beat you :p

I did drive mine like I'd just stolen it but I didn't find it much fun if I'm being honest. Horses for courses though.

I wish i could get my mpg as high as that. The highest i've managed is 42 and that was the very first tank full when i was still running it in

I find mine to be loads of fun but then again this is only the second car that i have owned and the first was a ford focus c-max. I get to drive loads of random wagons at work and they are always fun to drive.....

I drive various hire cars every week and most are fairly bland and dull, with recent exceptions being a Ford Kuga and a Nissan X Trail. The Kuga really handled well.

I was very particular how I drove mine from new.

Basically, as long as the engine was warm, if I wanted to drive it hard - I did. No fannying on with it at all.

The result? Never used one drop of oil in 6000 miles, and an engine that is both quick (for what it is) and economical.

Job done.

I also got mine in October. Black manual Blackline manual estate, from Henry's Glasgow. My first Skoda, after having owned a few VW's.

I'm impressed with the quality, practicality and performance. Inspires confidence at higher speed, seems really stable and planted. Once some friends / neighbours actually sit in it and get whizzed about they seem to like it too, forgetting their badge prejudices :sun: I find that the Battle music from Gladiator is a particularly effective way to showcase the stereo !

Average mpg for me is about 44 at the mo, after 5.5k miles.

I've had one or two issues with the parking sensors, when they were dirty (dry or wet). But fingers crossed all OK now. Also, when I was up at Crail Airfield for a blast in a Gallardo and Ferrari 430 (Xmas pressie voucher), the sat nav tried to send me down a cycle path just outside Crail - lol !!! Mind you I saw a guy in a Clio do the same thing, so it's not a Skoda issue I guess.

My front tyres seem to have worn down quite quickly, which is a wee bit disappointing. And no, I don't drive everywhere with a heavy right foot, neither does my wife. Once it was run in I did stretch its legs a bit though  . I also agree with the comments about 1st and 2nd gear.

I'm getting used to the black wheels now, but they really do show any scratches or chips. And I've been really careful washing them, microfibre mitt and two bucket method etc. But when the car's clean and shiny it does look fantastic. I actually like the Q car looks it has too, has presence but is subtle at the same time.

I swear that for the first few weeks I had it, people on the M77 thought I was an unmarked cop car, since I saw a lot of people pulling over sharpish when I approached behind them (just driving normally). - lol

Funny other thing is, I know from reading here and talking to the dealer that there are a few kicking about in Scotland, but I haven't seen one Blackline since getting it, only normal VRS's.

Anyway, overall very pleased I made a bit of an impulse decision and went for it, especially with the 0% VAT and free servicing deal. For the money I don't think there's a better complete package on the market.

Some good post here. One thing I have to agree with some is the drivers seat. I expect it to be my fat arse tho but I'm not sure how well it will look when av done with it. Also my right thigh does get numb after a while and can be distracting shifting about in the seat trying to get comfy.

Wheels do scratch easily even with careful washing but it does look the biz when washed and waxed. I did get a few bits wrapped and the car does get loads of looks.....
