Mk IV Golf GTi

Featured Replies

Does anybody know if you can tell the difference (externally that is) between the 150 and 180bhp Golf GTi? Is the "i" red on the 180?

My neighbour has one but i'm not going to ask him because he'd probably lie and say its the 180.

Much obliged

I thought the GTI all in sliver was either the 1.8 20v or the 2l 8v and the red "i" denoted the 1.8T (150BHP).

Not sure about the 180bhp Golf...I only thought they came out as the Anniversary limited edition...18'' alloys, red calipers and Anniversary interior trim.

After a long trail round other VAG forums it appears the difference between 150 and 180 is that the 150 has a 5 speed box and the 180 has a 6 speed box. Still haven't stumbled across whether the red i makes a difference.

SkodiRS you are definitely right about the anniversary being a 180, apparently it was the first golf to be available with that version of engine but after that it became available as an option on the standard GTi.

Of course i might be wrong, any further advances?

When I was looking for a Golf GTi before seeing the light and getting the Skud there didn't seem to be an external difference between the 150 and the 180. I was told that the 180 was only available in limited numbers...

After more searching the red i appears to be down to what the factory had in stock. If it was a silver day then thats what u got. Although dealers supplied red ones to fit at your own leisure.

Also it appears the 180 got ventilated rear discs.

Thankfully you don't see this kind of mix up with skodas. Or do you?

I was looking at passats before I bought the Octy. Generaly speaking, the more red letters the VW has on the back, the "hotter" it is. If the Gold spec's are anything like Passat's then it's a minefield.

Skoda's are nice and simple :D

The only external indication is the brakes are bigger. The 180 has 312mm up front and 256mm vented at the rear whilst the 150 has 288mm at the front and small unvented at the rear (can't remeber exact size). Also the non-turbo GTI's don't have a 3rd rear headrest.
