Setting up a network

Featured Replies

got a belkin ADSL modem with wireless g router today.stop to the guys in PC world about how to set it up etc cause i didnt know myself.he said all you do is take the RJ11 cable from the current modem into the belken and conneted up the ethernet and it didnt work.on the router its self the light is flashing which means its tryin to connect to the internet but isnt, but as soon as you plug it into the old on it connects straight away.anyone know how to set these up,ive follow all the instructions in the manual as well

You'd need to put the registration details into the router for it to connect to the ADSL supplier. Also you'd have to make sure to unplug the old modem.

Then depending on whether your old modem was USB-based (in which case you'll have the connection settings under dial-up networking) or not (in which case you shouldn't have to do anything) you will need to set it to 'never dial a connection' in IE and Outlook.

Then you should be able to connect to the router admin pages and take it from there :)

got as far as the router admin pages but it still wouldnt connect

Which ISP are you with? If you put your old modem back on, go to the ISP home page and note down the setting details for an router/modem. Most ISP have this on their HELP page.

Connect your new ADSL router to your PC via the Ethernet cable and log into the Admin page. Make sure your old modem is disconnected, and the new one is conencted to the ADSL filer.

Most Routers have a Easy Set up routing, where you need to enter your ISP account details, user name ect, and what type of conenction (PPPoe or ppoa)

Follow this routing, and you should then get a connection. It can take a few minutes for your new router MAC address to be accepted by the ISP.

Let us know how it goes!

its with tiscali which have nothing on there page

Hi Andrew

This is the link to the page on the Tiscali help page you need (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/broadband/router_settings.html)

You will need to make sure your router has these settings, especially the DNS server IP's and your account Username and password.

ok good news, the router is now showing all the lights to show everything is working, bad news it still isnt connetting to the internet even with the settings :(

Hi Andrew

Excellent! Ok, how are you trying to connct at the moment, using the wireless or Ethernet (wired) connection? I would recommend you first try with the Ethernet cable attached, WiFi is a different beast!

Your router should have an IP Address, normally this is what you type in the internet explorer window to to get to your Admin Page.

We Need to make sure that your PC and the Router can "see" each other. To do this open a command window (START>RUN>CMD). Type Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (replace the xxx with your IP address ie "Ping 192.168.0.1")

If your PC can see the router, you will get back 4 replies.

If you get 4 replies from the router, check that your firewall is set to allow the new network connection.

Any probs, let us know

Rob :)

try that and it came up all 4 times saying connection timed out

Hi Andrew

Ok, that mean that your PC cannot see your router and therefore not see the way onto the 'tinternet!

Silly question I know, but has your PC got a RJ45 Network Card? If so, Are you connected to the router using a Ethernet cable, did a network cable come with the router?

its conneted using a ethernet cable that came with the router

Are you running Norton Internet Security by chance or any other software firewall?? If you are, disable it and try again. Once you are using the router, you won't need the software firewall at all.

If you can't log onto the router admin page using the 192.168.0.1 address (also try 192.168.1.1 cos thats a popular default too) then your network port might be firewalled.

ok that worked i got 4 replies that time

Hi Andrew

Ok, with your Firewall down then, are you able to get a connection to the 'tinternet now?

nop still dont know what its doing.its registering a lan network but thats it

HI Andrew

OK, at a command prompt type: ipconfig

What IP address did you get back? If your getting an address of 169.254.x.x You need to look at your router settings to enable DHCP. This way your PC will be given an IP Address that your router will know.

Other thing to try, which I guess you've done, is with the new router attached, re-boot your PC.

Let us know how it goes.

its only registering the ethernet not the internet

Yeah, thats what you should be getting - your router handles your internet IP address, but also handles and issues the data packets to your LAN machines. So, you should be getting an ip address in the same range as your router (i.e. if your routers address is 192.168.0.1, your PC should have an address of 192.168.0.x).
