Which tyres for VRS?

Featured Replies

Black Magic Octavia Mk 1 VRS with cruise, sunroof, rear parking sensors, 18" RS4 Wheels, ECU Evolution remap, CompBrake DV, Weitec Hicon GT coilovers, SuperPRO dogbone bush, PiperX panel filter, de-locked, Philips X-treme bulbs, Osram Diadem indicator bulbs, LED interior bulbs, Headlight protectors, Alpine HU+uprated speakers, German number plates, Whiteline rear ARB, Mintex Extreme front pads, KVW100 window/sunroof closure, Mk4 Golf aero wipers. Regards, Rob:)

You spent all this on your car and fitted budget tyres? Doesnt make sense IMO.

Thats nothing.

What about my car? I had budgets on most of the time.

Imo none of them are dangerouse. Just drive accordingly.

Granted there is big differences but still depends what you use it for. Even cheap tyres I had were reasonable in the dry.

Best tyres ive used.

Michelin pilot sport 2

Worst

Kumho 712

(Still perfectly usable but in wet getaway was not good)

Best for the money

At the time marangoni mythos. Not now tho they have gone up in price a bit.

Fav tyres are hankook v12 and toyo t1r which are no longer available.

winter tyres too I put the cheapest of cheap ones on and they did really well. Even in 25deg heat when I needed to use them to get other set sorted. Never let me down I could get places 4x4 couldnt.

Drive with a head and not like your invincible and any tyre will be good to use.

Oh n look after them. Keep checking and keep inflated correctly. Limits any chance of failure people seem to report on cheep tyres.

I have had all the Kuhmo, Toyo, Continental, Falken etc etc, these are equally as good as the others, and they just happen to be cheaper, so why not? They were actually recommended by another vrs owner on here, don`t knock them till you`ve tried them ;)

Continental Contact Sport 5's - Awesome Tyre

There is a whole tyre sub section that's worth a look.

I've got Hankook Ventus S1 Evos on the front of mine, excellent grip wet or dry and I'm expecting to get over 20k miles out of them. Also had Ventus Prime 2s, seem to be similar grip/wear rate but are noticeably softer.

its just not as fun in there ;)

I think they are the achilles heel of that car.

Just replaced my two rear tyres with primewell pz900's. why? When i bought the car thats what was fitted. They were pretty much past it but the grip in the dry and wet is fine, they get a B rating for wet driving.

:(

just gotta love tyre snobs lol.

Not a snob, theyre very important and cant be overlooked for a budget make.

After blasting around Bedford today on an old set of Avon ZZ3 tyres, I would recommend them all day long, also I had Kumho KU39's on the rear, these were great too.

I also watched a few of the lads with Maxxis tyres on today and they also gripped well.

Try event tyres on the internet for some good prices.

considering all 4 tyres give you a contact patch around t he size of an A4 piece of paper I'm happy not to take the risk on cheap rubber

also you are happy to save £60 on tyres when your car must be worth £2k - each to their own I say

I always go for a decent brand tyre - not necessarily tyre snob, but wouldn't touch the unknowns

kuhmo etc I'd put on car but happy to spend extra £5 for goodyear or bridgestone

After seeing the guys on track today with premium rubber on the car having a bad day as the tyres turned to chocolate, I was surprised to see that so called budget tyres were out performing premium rubber.

Ultimately is personal choice, each to there own.

Probably harder compound, so didnt shred as easily.

Running Vredestein Vorti 225/45's. Unfortunately cannot compare with other tyres, but very impressed. Have a sneaky feeling the wear rate will be moderately high

love the way people make you feel small and inferior for using cheap tyres lol, yes branded tyres are good but just for steady driving around there is nothing wrong with cheap tyres, if the grip isn't there then don't drive like a tool.

Never had any trouble with budget tyres, they can be more fun too lol

test of your driving skills

my 2k car is just as safe as yours if not safer even tho I have cheap tyres on as I drive accordingly, if you say budgets are dangerous then you obviously don't.

Same on every car based forum

I don't think that is what people are saying, we all reckon we are safe, many folk who think that ought to do an IAM course and try for their pass and they will find out just how "safe" they are.

All I'm saying is I won't risk an expensive car over a £60 saving when you have no idea what is around the corner or what uncontrollable event may occur in front of you on the road. Besides why own a car like the VRS if you are going to drive like miss daisy everywhere cos you don't trust your tyres?

I have no issues with Kuhmo, toyo etc but what I'd never touch are the cheap chinese crap such as wanli etc etc

False economy IMO

I really rate vredestein sportrac 3s been running them on mine for ages now, very good wear and great in the wet.

Simply hilarious. Some budget tyres are downright dangerous, granted, I had Nankang NS2`s on the RS4`s when I bought them, and they were pants, did`nt inspire confidence, and were truly shocking in the wet. I do not drive like Miss Daisy I can assure you, and the Achilles suits me fine, wet and dry, and seem to be wearing ok too, time will tell.

Keep buying your overpriced `premium` tyres with the pretty name on the side, thinking you are somehow superior. Being a tyre snob, you probably would`nt bring yourself to try a decent budget tyre, which is a shame.

How much are the Achilles? The sporttrac 3s were about 80-90 the last time I bought them.

I understand exactly what people are saying about only driving to your cars capabilities but as soon as you drive at 60-70 mph you are already going to see a big difference in tyre ability if you need to stop or attempt to avoid collision caused by some other idiot!

IMO It is not good enough to say ''I was driving my car within its limits...'' Always nice to have that little bit extra if you happen to need it.

Anyone who says they haven't been a little bit caught out by the grip of a wet roundabout or junction surface at some stage in their driving time is lying or it just hasn't happened yet. Unless you can predict the future, you cannot say that your tyres are good enough for the roads (remembering that it is not just you on them)

I'd like to think that the other drivers on the road are making responsible decisions when it comes to their tyre choice and maintenance and if not, I at least want to give myself the best chance possible if I ever have a close call.

Anyway, back on topic... I have just changed from Goodyear efficient grip which were very nice all-round and lasted 18,000 miles of mixed driving on a stage 1 vrs to Dunlop sportmaxx rt. With these the car has very good grip in all conditions, stopping and starting, corner grip is very good and predictable and they displace water extremely well. I have them at 40psi and still find a little bit of movement in the tyre wall, it's an unusual feeling but they are in 205 55 r16 so maybe a lower profile would be better. They get a little noisy when really pushed hard in the corners, grip does not suffer at all though. Highly recommend them.

As you say, some budgets are downright dangerous...fact! they have been tested alongside other brands, and braking distance and breakaway tollerances are very different.

To say someone anticipate an accident/issue and drive accordingly is foolish, as in an accident at 60-70 as stated you have a split second to react, thats where breaking distances come into effect and poor tyres don't cut the mustard.

That being said plenty of tyres on here mentioned as budget are very good, ie marangoni, fulda, falken and khumos...budget imo is linglog chinese carp and the like.

I have falken 452's on mine .. don't cost the earth and not had any probs :bandit:

thats cos they are a good tyre imo, not premium but not budget imo, more a mid range ish tyre
