Economy On The Octy Vrs?

Featured Replies

The Fabia does do super economy but the Octavia would be just as good in Diesel guise - infact the TDi ambiente is more economical than the TDi Fabia and 60+ is easily possible on a motorway blast. The Fabia does superbly cross country and 60 is what I got on a 150 mile run yesterday witha full load. Has anybody tried the PD 130 Octavia because it is supposidly brilliant!

We have an owner of one of the first 130PDs Octavias on here - but I forget his name !

Back to topic though, the 1.8T engine is about the best engine of its type for performance/economy balance, even remapped.

If you do want the next jump for economy I'd highly recommend the 130PD as the starting point for tuning. Not the most refined but a really good compromise - just shows how good an engine it is when it powers the Fabia/Ibiza up to the Sharan.

Sounds like someone is planning a change...?

I would probably be tempted too, if I could afford to a) insure myself & B) keep filling it with petrol. I'm going to have to wait for some serious years to put on & salary to go up!

Maybe a change a bit later on in the year, but I think the running costs on an Octavia vRS would be a lot higher than the Fab.

I had a look at a couple of Octavias the other day, including the vRS which was really impressive.

I could do with something bigger (front room is great in the fab, but the back is tight for carrying people around in and the boot is a little small)

My head is telling me to go for that bargain Elegance 110, but heart says vRS!

Better not rush into anything just yet though and maybe wait for the new Octavia when it comes out.

I still love my Fabia though! :D

Meeee too

But I would also get a vRS if the money was there. I'd need a lot more than I have now

Done a dash and back down to Plymouth this weekend, and averaged 48 mpg. Not bad seeing as the cruise was employed at around 80, and also allowing for the still infuriating single carriageway bits. (I wasnt doing this as an economy/holiday run either!)

Cheers

Andy,

Thats a really good figure for a big, fairly heavy car like the Superb..

Thats the sort of thing that I would miss if I swapped the TDi - the fact that you can sit at 90-100mph all day long (on private roads obviously!) and still get around 45mpg.

;)

We have a 1.8T Oct estate and av 32.8 for all trips. thats been acheved on seting 2 on the computer. Had had it for 3 years and 30ish k.

The tdi Fabia we have had for the last 8k and av 50mph.

Is the real question what do you want the car for? what size suits?

we got the estate cos we needed a family car, i got the fabia cos the scooby only did 20mph, and have at 7 when i want to go fast

TBH my car only carries me for 80% of the time (girlfriend and mates/family the other) and the Octavia might be too big for my needs, although the large boot of the Octy means I could put my mountain bike in the back etc etc..

Maybe I should just get a roof rack!

Sounds about the best thing to do, Pendle do some cracking tow ball mounted types if you have a tow ball that is..

Since I've had my vRS -- MPG has improved slightly -- when new it was struggling to get above 28MPG -- 7,900 miles later and the average is upto 32mpg -- and upto 38mpg on a run.

Will be interesting to see what happens after the remap

Yep...mpg (and performance:D ) will improve with miles.

MPG after remap? Apparently it's supposed to be the same............must be doing something wrong then.:D;)

Too busy enjoying the remap.:D

fuel consumption is pretty good in my vRS, I generally get about 38mpg on my trip to and from work, which involves a fair amount of A road driving and town driving. Similar figures if I do the motorway trip.

I am currently using optimax (most of the time) and have found my trip consumption figure to be anywhere up to 4mpg better than with Normal unleaded, the normal work trip would be about 34mpg.

I am definitely thinking of cruise control, not only for consumption, but also preserving my driving license :D

Cheers,

Keoghan

mine managed 28.6mpg from santa pod to home crusing at 90ish

Would probably be 33-35 without the wing ... :p

nah its the tyres...

Ah, see, you need nice skinny tyres on steel wheels...not that I'd see much over 28mpg cruising at that sort of speed. Based on theory, of course.

:D

Matthew,

I'm off to the Ring this weekend. May I borrow your Fabia TDI to see what sort of figures I can achieve?

Does that mean I get to use your vRS? :D

  • 1 month later...

31.27 mpg overall, with 33.24 on the last 67 litres put in - and that's post-Jabba and for a 4X4.

Im rating 28.4mpg for my first 600 miles in the vRS.

If optimax really gives + 4mpg that must make it pretty cost effective. Anyone think this likely? or doubtful?

Since my visit to Jabba the car tells me it has averaged 27.9mpg, I am happy with this as it doesnt really get opened up, a recent trip to Milton Keynes resulted in a 38mpg average though.

Pretty happy overall considering the performance and the conditions (I live on the edge of the peak district so lots of hills)

I think it very unlikely to be true. I am sticking to mainstream 4 star petrol - ie BP, Esso etc - where one can have a reasonable expectation that the fuel will actually perform as advertised. From members' comments it would appear that the quality, ie octane rating, of Optimax can be distinctly 'iffy' at times. That said, some members swear by it.
