Intercoolers...

Featured Replies

Again, covered by many... but not a definitive answer.

Have searched, every post I read ends with seat sport intercooler being cheapest.

Pricing is irrelevant in the matter. Just looking which has the bigger core and build quality ?

Forge or THS seat sport style intercooler ?

Dark side pipework will be used anyway.

Forge being popular, but has anyone got the THS one?

Thanks

Luke

In terms of "ease", the Forge or the SEAT Sport can be the simplest and quickest to fit. If getting the SEAT Sport, preferably get the THS one or the Forge version as they're fully welded.

There's also a Pro-alloy intercooler that's sold by Jabbasport.

Next up would be a 540x140x65 cored intercooler fitted under the crash bar. There is a kit for the Ibiza at £249. There has been a group buy on here. I've heard mixed things about it since. Ideally, get a similar intercooler and spec your own pipework and decent silicone bends.

Out of interest Dan how thick is the SS one?

I'll measure mine tomorrow so we can update with some core depths

Will measure it later mate :)

The ths one fits the ibiza with the crash bar in place am guessing the Fabia crash bar must be diffrent

Yes it's much larger. I have an ibiza crash bar to fit to mine tonight / tomorrow :)

Those heavy intercoolers must lower speed performance, does little or nothing to the running of the car in general.

But it must do wonders for the ego trip and wish them the very best. LOL

These cars are little diesels and NOT high performance vehicles, even tweaking engine management/exhaust system etc they are still are only little diesels.

If you want to flash your BIG intercooler, stick it on the roof, now that would be different. LOL

I do agree to an extent they are little diesels but they have a huge heart plus the pd engine loves maxium air yes the intercooler won't make much diffrance untill u get into the big figures.

but u also buy things that are better quilty than what's standerd ie my seat sport intercooler on my Cupra tdi is leaking due to grimped end tanks.

Now the ths and forge coolers have welded end tanks so there for a better quilty so why not replace with then when there better built and wi last longer.

Plus these so called little tdi engines have been very underestermated there is A huge power to be had out of them if pockets are deep enough

What do you mean by lower recess? It is a substantial intercooler that does not require crash bar modification as far as I know and the pipework does not obstruct the towing eye like some do. As far as performance is concerned, I'm pretty sure it'll cope with whatever can be produced from our engines.

Allard do an FMIC also, not an option mentioned yet.

I know, the Pro alloy one is a very well made one, but does it not only sit in the lower grille ?

Correct me if I am wrong ?

Regarding the Allard twin pass, looks good, but the pipe work that comes with it looks odd shaped ? And does anyone have it ?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Except the guy who wants one on his roof.

Just had a good look at the allard intercooler and pipeing. The piping looks ok but my slef I don't think the intercooler looks as good as the ths and forge coolers.

Just measured and the core on the forge SS cooler is 55mm thick

You can't tell if an intercooler is any good by 'looking' at it, you need figures for net pressure drop and delta T. It could be very well made but very badly designed.

Oh, and size isn't everything either, volume is more important.

No your correct you can not tell how good anything is by just looking but being a welder my self I can tell the weld quilty on the allard cooler doesn't look as good as the ths or forge.

And defo agreed its volume required more than anything on the pd engine

The THS intercooler has a 70mm thick core.

Just measured mine now as been messing about with it from my old car.

However Allard do have massive experience with turbocharging going way, way back, I met Alan Allard once when I was just a junior engineer back in the eighties, hugely knowledgeable and a really decent bloke. Anyway, I would expect Allard to have done their homework with the design and specification so you might be rather pleasantly surprised at the performance of their intercooler if not the appearance.

Did you have to cut the crash bar much? Does seem nice and chunky :)

Post is wrong!

The stock intercooler is crap! The performance intercoolers are aluminium so weigh very little!

Just the side nearest the the pipe inlet/outlets to allow enough clearance for the pipe's to not foul.

Can just see it here on this pic

Oh and for the idiot who said the standard one is more than enough......I beg to differ

Ueah the ths one is probebly 3x the volume of the standard cooler

Just measured and the core on the forge SS cooler is 55mm thick

Normal SS one is 55mm thick too Charlie :)

The standard one can't cope with remapped power, it's only good for one boot through the gears when remapped then drops power , i logged temps with vcds.

Thanks Dan :)

Told ya it was no deeper :)

Told ya it was no deeper :)

Good call :)

Still it's well made and at £523 brand new with pipes etc it was good value, compared to the £800 odd for the other forge Fabia ic
