Revs at 70mph

Featured Replies

Hi all just trying to see if I have problem. I have 2005 VRS all standard. No mods.

I am keeping constant revs at 2K in 6th gear doing 70mph. The car is still nippy but I think when I bought it a month ago or so it was doing lower revs on motorway cruising and power was instant. I also feel I have lost something I just cannot put my finger on. It was sooo fast on the motorway now I feel it needs more revs to reach the same kind of crusing speeds.

I am about to book the car in to try to diagnose. Just hope theres nothing iffy with the turbo. Car has done 63k - very low mileage. I am not mechanically minded whatsoever but it has some how lost it "flying machine" feel and noticed the lift off from 2nd and 3rd is just not as quick almost slight lag before it takes off in most gears. I want to keep the car and need it running top notch to restore its original feel. I have been very careful since I bought and I drive sensibly.

Could any one please carry out a like for like check for me. Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks.

My pd 130 asz is doing 1750rpm @70 mph on GPS . 2600rpm @100mph but runs 17" wheels on 205/40/17 tyres. Std wheels were 16" on 205 /45/16's .

If you have a problem causing a bit of a power loss it can't affect your rpm /speed this is set by gear ratios and wheel and tyre size.

If you've worn say 6 mm of tread from your tyres that could alter your gearing?

Its warmer? (at last...)

I think I get the same but I'm not sure. I just can't put my finger on what it is but I'm sure my car used to feel faster or go through stages of feeling fantastic to as slow as a tractor..could it be weather?..differences in fuel? I feel my car changes from week to week and the gap between it feeling like a rocket seems to be widening!

Turbocharged engines work better and produce more power when it's cool.

You lose power as the weather gets warmer, particularly with a side mount

intercooler tucked away from proper airflow.

And you're probably getting more used to the car as well.

Your car will not be doing different revs at 70 mph - that's for certain!

if the car is used constantly at low revs let it warm up properly take it out of the way and kick its arse .... it may just be getting slightly choked

I suppose slightly higher revs but same speed may indicate some minor

but constant clutch slip? Particularly in 6th at relatively low revs.

Do the revs jump then dip then it pulls when you get your toe down from a constant speed?

Is that the 'lag' you refer to maybe?

Thanks everyone. All i know is the car is not right. I don't agree with the theory of warmer weather as it has been like that a few weeks ago when the weather was crap. I do however agree there may be minor change but still does not account for power loss.

jamwatn thats exactly what i'm talking about.

As I say I think I have noticed more revs to maintain speeds I used to do. I need to stamp more accelerator to give me the performance I used to have. Almost like I am driving with no turbo at all just a nice bit 1.9 diesel engine.

I have got more used to the car but believe me when I say I haven't driven it hugely and have made a 100mile trip and still noticed. This all ties in soon after I reset the service indicator.

I thought about a limp home mode of some kind but no warnings or anything. I think I need to get it diagnosed at skoda, after all they are the experts. I just don't feel the power anymore so why have it?, also noticed the back box is really sooty on the outside, like black. Not sure if any of this makes sence I hope so. Thanks again.

Unless you've changed the gearbox or your wheel diameter the revs won't have changed.

Could you have a boost leak? Is the MAF out of spec?

Unless you've changed the gearbox or your wheel diameter the revs won't have changed.

Unless the transmission is slipping,

Are you remembering to put it in 6th? It sounds like slipping to me otherwise. I know my clutch slips sometimes, but only when accelerating never when maintaining a constant speed

Thanks guys. Very helpful

Possible faulty MAF.Unplug it and see if it goes better.

Or as said it could be the clutch slipping slightly.

Unpluging the maf doesnt work on these. The ecu doesnt have a preset value to use if maf is not there so if it dies or is unplugged it wont run right if at all for long iirc.

Are you sure it is actually reving more and not just a speed sensor showing more revs? Or something is making tge car feel rougher so to give the impression of more revs?

Does the ECU on these cars have a range of settings to move - pretty sure my old 3-series was like that and I've heard B6-chassis S4 owners complaining of the same thing: Drive it leisurely for a while and the car slips into an economic range of values, give a good caning and some sharp braking and it changes into the more performance-based range of values. Can't say I've felt it myself mind you but then I don't drive mine every day

Mines revvs at about 2200 at 70. Iv got 17inch alloys :)

Mine is around 2100 at 70mph '05 fabia and im on 16" alloys

Running on 205/45/R16 tyres with original alloys.

My old 2005 Fabia VRS reaches 112mph quickly, but from then on it takes it's time to reach it's 130mph (red-line) max.

At 2100 rpm in 6th gear for 70mph.

At 2500 rpm in 5th gear for 70mph.
