ASZ v BLT

Featured Replies

So talk to me people

I have made the rookie mistake of buying what I thought was a ASZ turbo only to find out it was a BLT turbo.....when I bolted it to the engine and found everything else didn't mount up properly! DOH!

So I know there were clearly EGR and anti shudder differences between the 2 engines but are the turbos identical below the different cast manifolds?

If I bolted on the BLT turbo and bought an ASZ EGR delete kit can I just blank off the relevant holes and job is a goodun? Or do the turbo differences run deeper than that?

Help

As far as I can tell cliff it's just the egr and anti shudder valve that's different. Egr delete is the way forward :)

Ok so second question why do you need an EGR delete and why can't you just blank off the turbo EGR hole and the matching hole in the EGR itself?

You can..

You can Cliff, people use the delete kit to remove the minor flow restriction that the plunger etc creates in the egr valve.

Had to do the same when I bought my hybrid a couple years ago on the Ibiza as the egr pipe didn't line up.

So a way to make my BLT turbo work when attached to my ASZ engine will be to buy a couple of darkside blanking plates cover the holes and job done?

Would I need an EML warning mapped out or given its ASV can it just be turned off with VAGCOM never to appear again?

Yeah or make a couple, whichever you prefer.

You'd need it mapped or the standard map tweaked to remove egr fault. It'll most likely flag up lack of flow or something along those lines.

Faboka could help out if you don't want to get an actual remap I think :)

Oh and disconnect the vac pipe for the egr and blank it with a small bolt.

Really it should be mapped out. Only way to truly remove the EGR. However if you physically have the EGR fitted with the vacuum pipework still there, only no pipe between the EGR and turbo manifold, then I think the car will still think the EGR is working, so no CEL.

....or make a couple

You are giving me more credit than I deserve.

Remember I am only asking these questions as I have bought and fitted the wrong turbo!!!

So as a temporary measure I could remove the pipe between EGR and turbo manifold, blank off the resulting holes, and drive the car.

In the mean time I could get AE Turbos to rebuild me a high spec KKK out of 1 of my 2 dead shells in my possession?

Yep blanking them off will be fine. As jase says it will need mapping out eventually.

I don't think turbo builders touch kkk turbos?

I don't think turbo builders touch kkk turbos?

I spoke to AET turbos back in march and they assured me they could rebuild it.

I might stick then both carcasses in a box and courier them up to them.

The worst that can happen is they say no I guess.

Still looks cheaper to buy a 'new' used turbo off eBay though.

Although how I have bought 2 second hand turbos from here for less than the price of the cheapest one for a breakers on eBay astounds me!

Or deffo much cheaper just to blank the 2 holes and see what happens! ;)

oh decisions decisions

...and so the 2 shall never meet

but if we blank off this from the turbo manifold

remove this pipe and blank of the resulting hole in the EGR

everything should run ok albeit potentionally with a CEL light or not?

I'm not even sure the CEL will come on, as the unit will be still there. I enjoy being proved wrong, but ultimately you could get it mapped out, or simply have VCDS on hand to check its only the EGR flow fault at fault. :)

Also, the EGR looks for less flow when you are caning it, so to keep the CEL off, simply thrash it everywhere, ;)

Spoke to Scott at Darkside who confirmed what we thought - although he may not thank me for saying it.

2 blanking plates will do the same job as the delete kit but (before you all stop buying delete kits!) can cause issues for the EGR down the line as it can get clogged due to not actually doing its recirculating job.

That is not a big enough risk for me to worry about short term :)

2 blanking plates on order and the car shall be back on the road shortly.

Now to find a purpose for my collection of ASZ KKK carcasses - hmm trade in 2 get one hybrid one back?

....simply thrash it everywhere, ;)

This my friend is what caused the problem ;)
