Anyone Run Slicks for Track days?

Featured Replies

As the title says, does anyone on here use slicks on standard vrs wheels or know the size you would put on a standard vrs wheel? Got a bit confused looking at the sizes lol, reason I ask is because my lovely new powder coated wheels have been destroyed by brake dust after I was at croft a few weeks back, looking into buying a set of steels for track use and putting some slicks on them, and size info welcome :)

Get some semi slicks? My mate runs the federal ones and boy do they stick.

Do you mean semi-slicks like the Toyo 888 ?

I don't think anyone (unless I am not aware of it) has ever run full-blown slicks.

Better off using trackday made semi-slick tyres which can also be used on the road.

No I've just ordered some Federal 595 RSR's ... I mean like a complete slick tyre, or a grooved slick, obviously

Only for dry weather..

I wouldn't run steels on a track either especially with proper tyres, the steels won't allow enough air thru em to cool the brakes properly and also don't absorb the heat from the hub as quickly as alloys do meaning the wheelbearings will cook easier too.

never even thought of anything like that, thanks !

On proper race slicks, the number which is normally the profile size (i.e 45 for a stock vRS alloy) is instead the total diameter.

Now a 205/45 R16 will be 45% of 205mm x 2 + 16". So I make that roughly, say 180mm + 16" is roughly 430mm, so a 610 is the rough total diameter.

So in theory a full race slick of 205/610 R16 is what you would need.

Never heard of anyone on here running full slicks.

If you want something better than a semi-slick will the car be able to handle the extra g force in the corners?

Thinking fluids etc...

I ran Michelin slicks at Brean on my fabia, a stage rally is not quite the same as a trackday I guess tho but I ran 190x50x15's on mine which were too big really and I couldn't get heat into them in the short stages especially the rears which were stone cold after a 4 mile stage. I would go for a decent road tyre unless you have super stiff (decent) suspension otherwise you will just highlight the problems with the rest of the set up and maybe make it less fun to drive for the day,

I found it tough enough building heat into semi slicks at Bedford. They were hard compound though.

I remember struggling with mine, especially the rears as on a Fabia they don't really do anything!

Thanks for all the replies guys... It's just I saw a guy at croft with a Mini Cooper S and he changed to slicks when he got there and to me it looked pretty standard apart from coilovers and fully stripped out and e was keeping up with Andy grady's Time Attack Subaru, really stuck to the road.... Hadn't thought of all the extra G force's and things, althought uprated anti roll bars are on the to do list, I have a rear strut brace I made myself which is made out of 42mm steel tube which hasn't stiffened the rear end up a lot. Like I say I have ordered some federal 595 RSR's as I'm at knockhill on 7th July will see what these are like

Before I go diving into slicks.

Once warm they were lovely. I think we had more heat/less damp than when you used 888s on the previous event. :)

A proper rear anti roll bar / sway bar will do way more for your car than bolting a bit of tube in the boot

well considering it cost me £0 to fabricate its done well tbh... But yeh couldn't agree more heard brilliant things about the rear anti roll bars on Fabia's so I will be investing in one soon

As has been eluded to earlier, I wouldn't go for full blown slicks. The extra load you will be able to carry through the corners will put way more load on things like wheel bearings and may get oil/fuel surge problems without a baffled sump and swirl pot.
