Oh for God's sake, stop WHINING!

Featured Replies

Just wondered - anyone have any experience/heard of/know anything about any problems with Octy vRS rear wheel bearings/brakes/other running gear which might cause a high pitched droning whine whilst cruising? Sounds to me to be coming from the nearside rear wheel.

The Octy's started doing it, you can hear it also whilst slowing down for example approacing a roundabout or similar, slowly decreasing in pitch as speed decreases.

Only recent events are new tyres fitted all round, and a couple of loud clunks from the rear suspension, (none since though) but I can find no evidence of anything broken/fallen off/loose. Just the whining noise.

Anyone?

I'd imagine that one of your bearings is on the way out, had this on previous cars. When you speed up the noise gets louder...

This is what I suspected, but I was wondering if there was any kind of known problem, as 20K seems a bit early for a wheel bearing to grind itself into dust!!!

When did it start?

Just wondering if you can put the dates together with when we met ;) Could of accelerated it's demise if unlucky.

Only 20K?

Get driving it man :)

hmm that does seem a bit early, maybe it needs adjusting?

I know this is the octavia section but Jane's fabia vRS has started something similar and its only 9 months old. When I first noticed it I thought it was the car next to us but it was Janes

I had presumed the brakes were sticking and I think thats probably the case.Normally only hear it slowing down.Sounds like the noise a bicycle makes when brakes are sticking slightly on the rim.

The dates just might tie up, Colin ;)

That's the noise... a high pitched whirry droney noise. Also sounds a bit like the noise my old grooved discs made when braking on my Punto... but it's there all the time. Especially noticeable whilst cruising with all the windows shut and the seats folded.

If its a bearing it will be more prominent when that wheel is loaded. When you hear the noise, gradually drift left and right and it should disappear when the weight is on teh opposite wheel. I.e if the noise is more apparent when you drift to the right, then its the nearside bearing as thats where the weight is. Nearside bearings go first in this country because of the way we go around roundabouts :) I wouldn't say bearing is high pitched, more of a drone.

It's a drone, definitely, but not at a low pitch. It's a higher pitch.

Dan, I've got a similar noise coming from the N/S rear wheel. It's a droning noise from about 40 mph up over and is quite loud when braking. I suspected a wheel bearing so took it into the delaer. The bearing was checked for play and also the strut was checked for vibration when the wheel was turned but nothing untoward to report.

On closer inspection the inside edge of my rear tyre has 'run off' with the odd flat spot noticeable at a change in tread pattern which is causing the noise. I swapped the wheels front to back and the car was almost undriveable

I've been advised to get a full alignment check done but it looks like 2 x new rear tyres will be on the cards :(

I'd suggest that this might be your problem but you've had new tyres on the back which has thrown me somewhat as my rear tyres have done over 20k miles....

Certainly sounds like a similar noise Jimmy... And it definitely sounds like a wheel bearing or similar rather than a tyre type noise, especially since it only seems to be that one wheel... and all four tyres are brand spanking new, only about 300 miles on them, no noise from the other three.

I don't know what to think, really... I'm sure it's going to be a bearing or something, but the noise doesn't appear to be getting worse. I might get the alignment checked just in case anyway.

Dan, Jack the rear in the air and check the bearing for play.

Don't want to teach me granny to suck eggs if you already know the process or have tried it but grab the tyre top and bottom and 'wiggle' the wheel to and fro. If there's any play then suspect the bearing. Other than that just take the car into the dealer and ask one of the techs to take it for a road test.

Jimmy, thanks for the advice... I do know the process... but I've become strangely lazy what with having a car with a warranty... SWMBO's Almera gets all the socket set action these days!

I'm thinking it's dealer time again. :D
