Weird fuel gauge issue

Featured Replies

I hope some can shed some light on my issue. I have a 2005 Octy 2.0 TDI PD with approximately 100K on the clock. With all the hot weather recently I believe my fuel gauge is playing up or the sender unit is doing something very strange.

This morning when driving to work I had 55 miles left according to the trip computer I traveled around 8 miles and when I pulled up and parked the car at work the trip computer said I have 35 miles left on it. I didn't drive the car like a maniac so I cant believe I have lost 12 miles somewhere.

Could this be an issue due to the hot weather diesel expands hence the incorrect fuel gauge readings?

Can I do something to remedy this is there button on the fuel cap to release trapped air etc?

Or is my engine suddenly eating this much fuel?

Thanks for your help!

Jumps like that are nothing unusual in my experience especially when getting down to the bottom of the tank. You might have even found the number gong back up.

The miles left is just a guess by the computer using a short term mpg average against the remaining fuel. A few traffic lights could easily drop the mpg and make the miles left bomb.

Thanks for the prompt reply I did notice it earlier as when driving home from work yesterday but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I was on 95 miles left and when I got home I was around the 75 miles left mark. It's just weird that I'm using so much fuel for an 8 mile trip.

It's working out you average. In my fabia vrs I could at times have my fuel light go back off due to the manner of my driving.

Will the actual fuel gauge be affected as well?

I can't honestly say I noticed the needle moving back up sorry.

You don't have a problem.  It's just a guide. That amount a variation is to be expected on a system that only displays to the nearest 5 miles and measures the amount of fuel remaining by using a float dangling in a sloshing puddle of fuel in the bottom of your tank.

Thanks eccleshill

Perhaps I'm being paranoid here.

I'm going to fill up at lunch time and shall reset my trip down to zero hopefully it will be ok.

Perhaps I'm being paranoid here.

You said it

If it is any comfort I set off this morning for my 8 mile commute with the gauge showing just under 1/4 tank and the maxidot showing 125 miles left.  Arrived at work - 105 miles left.

The variation increases massively as the tank empties - ironic really because that is when you need the greatest precision!

Too right we want precision we pay a lot of money for these things and petrol prices are not exactly cheap.

Filled up at lunch almost half a tank maxidot showing 265 miles left. Have reset my trip count to zero, will keep an eye on it. I'm driving to Europe  next Thursday and I'm hoping all is good, perhaps this is where my paranoia is coming from.
