2wd or 4wd that is the question

Featured Replies

My wife bought a IX35 4wd because the job she is in now means traavelling 15 miles each way to Queensbury . It snows 1st there  more than any other built up area in west yorkshire , my R36 has a haldex system too but that did not help me in the 8 foot drifts we had this year as ground clearence was the big issue as it was stuck up to the axels . There is no escaping 20% hills where we live as we live on the top of one , the unpredictably of our climate makes us reluctant to change to winter tyres, even my friend who is the biggest winter tyre advocate got caught out,AFTER changing back to summers. My wife had to cancel her sports day this year due to snow . Also the roads near us are the last places, sometimes never to get gritted. If you buy used the hassle and expense of changing your wheels as and when, makes the difference in initial cost much less. My wife by the way is an excellent driver and never in the 30 years has ever had an accident ,she just felt as did I as 4wd was the best for her, I meanwhile only do 1500 miles in my car and 12,000 cycling, but swap the wheels out with my spares with cycle-cross tyres but that only  takes 30 seconds a wheel! so when conditions are really bad I have only 1x2!  :giggle:

Can we agree on one thing?

We all made our choice and paid our money and bought Yeti's. Whether its 2x2 or  2x4 or 4x2 or 4x4, they all drive very well and for 99% of the time it doesn't matter how many wheels are powered.

Has anyone done a 6x6 or 6x2 Yeti conversion like the old (Overfinch?) Range Rover conversions from way back when... or maybe not so way back when?

Ive got enough cats in the garden.

Have you thought of getting a metal dealer in to give you a price for all the precious metal contained therein? Might be worthwhile.

AutoSocks and similar solutions come nowhere close to the capabilities of a 4x4. Sometime back I came across  a test done by a Norwegian motoring magazine to see the usefulness of such solutions. They compared an Octavia 4x4 and a 4x2 Yeti equipped with various options (winter tyres without studs, Autosocks, chains and another solution called Clack & go). The test was to drive up a 14-15 degree gradient with snowy/icy conditions from a standing start. Only the Octavia managed to pass the test. The Yeti 4x2 couldnt pass the test even with help from any of these solutions.

I know. I was just being a bit mischievous. I'm glad I threw it in because this article looks interesting (thank you). We've used AutoSocks on FWDs and found them useful for exactly what they are designed for – occasional use.

Or should I say Tusen Takk og har det bra (at risk of getting into more trouble after my – first and last, I promise! – German/Swiss German post yesterday!)   :giggle:

Tell me about it, but then again.....Its 35 degrees outside, kids are off school.....what better way to pass the time. Silly really, I'm supposed to be revising my 'Advanced Drivers' test. But then again I am HGV 1 trained so I think I will give it a miss and to be taught how to drive on the 'Yeti' forum.

Good luck with your advanced test. BTW, what are all the blue illuminations you see in oncoming HGV windscreens on the motorway? Been puzzling me for ages? (Serious question.)

Four wheel drive is quite useful and can do many many things but unfortunatly it cant change the weather in Finistere. I'm sure VAG are working on it.

j'espere!

Sorr-eeeeee!  Not even the odd quoted foreign language word, in italics of course if it hasn't been adopted into widespread English usage, as prescribed by convention and New Hart's Rules? (Other style guides are of course available).

Depends what country your in. When I go to the UK I tend to have instead in the window a 'Santa Claus' bent over backwards flashing his.....well you get the picture !

You need to move to the Dordogne for entertainment. Lovely weather, lots of Brits, and an endless supply of 'Fish & Chip' shops to remind you of home. Oh Vive la France.
