PD100 feels less gutsy

Featured Replies

Over the past few months I've noticed that the Fabia doesn't feel as torquey as it did two years ago when I first got it. Most of my driving is on the motorways and overtaking just takes that little bit longer. Maybe it's because I have gotten used to the TDI since moving up from an 8vMPI, but I thought I would post up and see what you all have to say.

MPGs in the first year (brim-to-brim, recorded on the FuelLog app) were 45-50, now tends to be 40-45. Oil, oil filter and air filter changed every 10k, fuel filter every 40k. No CEL and no VagCom errors (I only have the handheld one, not the laptop s/w with bells and whistles that draws all the graphs). Coolant temp sensor changed 40k ago and hits vertical within 3 miles. Tyres pressures regularly checked. Not mapped. When I'm bored on the motorway, I give it a bit of an Italian tune up....once a week or so. I wouldn't say my driving style has changed massively.....if anything I'm more cautious nowadays trying to be gentle with the engine+turbo so it lasts longer.

Reading on here I think possible issues are boost leak, faulty MAF or filthy EGR. But if any of these were to be the problem, would it not throw an error code to be picked up by VagCom?

All the tubes going into the valve block are secure and quite robust, the L-pipe between the EGR and air hose from the intercooler seems sturdy and the airbox and pipe leading to the inlet manifold seems secure too. I haven't taken anything apart, and can't see any excessive oil/fluid anywhere. I have to confess, I haven't done any engine bay cleaning so it's just accumulated muck. Maybe I should start by giving the bay a good wipe down and check regularly? Or clean the EGR?

I'd rather not go around changing parts for no reason and perhaps I'm just being paranoid.....but if anyone has any suggestions on what to investigate further, I'd be grateful. Just a few keywords/pointers and I'll search the forum for details.

Disconnect the battery and leave for 30 minutes, then ensure everything is switched off, restart at idle and leave it idling for 30 minutes to re-set the ECU.

Disconnect the MAF and see it runs better. If so then that's your culprit.

How about your air filter & fuel filter?

Changed recently?

Thanks for that, I will try in the am.

Thanks for the tip, I'll disconnect the MAF and report back.

I changed the air filter last week along with an oil change. Fuel filter was done 30k ago.

Well, I tried the ECU reset...switch all electronics off, disconnect earth for 30 mins, reconnect and let engine idle for another 30. During the idle it didn't sound like it was going to stall or 'hunt' for anything as per the sticky in the technical guide. The rpms stayed at 950, so I don't know if the process was done correctly. Driving around didn't feel any different. I've just filled up, so I'll get a brim-to-brim mpg soon.

On another note, doing this has thrown an HVAC error which I didn't have before:

01271 - Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68): Faulty

Possible Causes

Wiring/Connectors from/to Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68) faulty

Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68) blocked

Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68) faulty

The aircon is working fine, switches from cold to warm when I turn the temp regulator and recirc seems to be working too.

Not accepting paragraphs for some reason....sorry for the block text!

After going on a few longer drives, I'm happy to report it feels as gutsy as before now! It is more torquey and accelerates better. Thanks for the tip regarding resetting the ECU!

Just hope the temperature flap error thing doesn't play up.
