Issues with my Yeti

Featured Replies

Hi people.

Long time no post…

I’ve had my Yeti since March 2010. n It is an Experience 1.2 TSI DSG 7.

Overall satisfied with it so far. Only nag about fuel consumption.

I have the following issues so far that I will have to tackle before the warranty expires (March 2014):

1) When starting the engine from cold, it runs rough for a few seconds. The duration is anything from 5 to 15-20 seconds when left to idle. Usually stops when I engage the Reverse or Drive. The sound is something between a rattle and rough sounding engine. This behavior is rather frequent (something like 1 out of 5 starts) but mainly in cold weather and if it is left to cool for extended periods (at least overnight or longer).

- I reported the problem to the service department. A tightening of screws below did not have any result.

- A different dealership speculates that it could be the timing chain. Problem is there are not errors stored in memory and a friend who timing chain problems had a light come up and errors reporting timing faults.

Any ideas guys?

2) I have the DSG 7. Sometimes, after a stop, when I step on the accelerator, it will not go and rev the engine like it is on Neutral. Once I step on the break again and try the accelerator immediately after, it will accelerate like normal. It may do it on flat surface or even when s on an inclined road. Also, it will do it in Drive, after stopping, or after a stop and change from Drive to Reverse and vice versa. It occurs rarely, something between 1 in 75 to 100 stops. It is rather concerning though.

- I reported the problem to the service department. Again, no stored errors for the DSG. They suggested the battery could be failing. They had a case of a Yeti with a failing battery do something similar. In that case, they had to turn the ignition off and on to get the DSG to engage in gear again. In my case, depressing the break and then accelerating will do the trick. The truth is I had my battery drained twice over these years by accident, during Navi map CD installations, but the battery appears to function OK after I jumpstarted the car with a spare battery I keep in my garage. Also, the dealership supposedly checked the battery.

I have heard of various problems with the DSG, especially the DSG 6 with the wet clutched, but not with the DSG 7. Has anyone experienced anything similar here?

3) I have manual seats with lumbar support.  Driver’s seat back tends to have a little play. Adjusting the inclination of the back may result in a position with no play.

Any idea if there is something easily accessible that needs tightening or something like that?

Thank you all in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Speedster,

Page 98 of my manual explains that the engine will be noisier after a cold start.  May be nothing to worry about.

Mozart.

It's of limited significance to you but my dealer had my car in to do a 'DSG adapion reset', or something along those lines, (which incidentally seems to have helped with the juddering in second gear at low revs when pulling away)......and whilst it was in there the diagnostic procedure that they ran on the car showed that the timing chain had stretched. The camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor evidently showed some discrepancy.  They had the car in and changed the chain under warranty and I must report that it made not a scrap of difference to the car, but it was running fine before it went in - apart from the juddering second gear..  So surely, if they suspect a timing chain issue they could do the same diagnostic check that I had done??

I don't think anyone is going to be able to pinpoint the DSG issue unless they happen to have had the identical problem and can suggest something specific....but, of course, that's what you have the warranty for - and as it expires in March 14 then I think I'd be getting Skoda Technical involved and also thinking about whether Skoda will assure you of their "Goodwill" beyond three years in view of your ongoing problems within warranty...if not would you consider an extended warranty to be money well spent if you're keeping the car?

You just reminded me!

I have another ther issue with the DSG!

4) I also have the juddering in 2nd gear and low revs, like when turning. Also not occurring too often!

The thing is, I have VAGCOM, so I know for a fact I have no faults stored in memory.

Regarding the DSG and basic adaptation reset, I had it done when they reflashed the engine ECU under a recall.

After the reflash, there was a persistent fault stored regarding the cruise control. After consulting with the factory in Cz and the master mechanics in Athens, the performed an adaptation on the DSG, which took care of the fault for good.

Was the juddering cured with the adaptation?

The 1.6 FSI in my EOS does something similar, but it does it very rarely, for just a few seconds, and frankly, I have it since Jan. 2007 and I can't remember when was the last time it did it. It is supposed to have something to do with the oil drying from parts of the engine and taking a few seconds to circulate and lube everything.

With the Yeti it is more often and noticeable.

I'll be honest and say I do think it fixed it.  However, prior to having it done the judder was at it's worst when I drove it round congested town traffic with a hot engine.  Having said that it was never very bad and didn't do it all the time - far from it - but it was sometimes there and was irritating.  It's not happened since but I haven't subjected it to especially heavy town driving but, as I say, it is fine as we speak with the mixed driving it mostly does.

The engine rattle could possibly be a DMF issue.

I assume the petrol engines have them as well as the Diesel engines.

I honestly didn't think there was (is) one on the petrols.  Someone will confirm, but if there is then that's something else for me to worry about :-)

Well, the tech managed to replicate the problem with the juddering, as well as the failure to accelerate from a stop.

The battery checked out OK.

No clue about a firmware update or any campaign regarding the DSG.

They will report my case with the national importer in Athens.

I might get an answer in a couple of days.

I contacted my dealership today. After consulting with the national importer in the capital, the suggested full clutch replacement and probably timing chain replacement if they manage to replicate the rattling sound.

All of the above covered under warranty, however I am very disappointed. I consider the above very severe procedures that should not be considered in a care before 100.000 km.

I cannot imagine what else I might expect after these repairs/replacements.

I have NO problems with my 3yr old DSG gearbox whatsoever.  You're worrying.

Speedster, where are you?

It is very useful if you put that in your details on the left, under your avatar.

His "National Importer" is in Athens, I'd guess Greece.

I live in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Oh my poor YETI!

It is scheduled for surgery on Monday...

Prognosis is DSG clutch & timing chain replacement, all under warranty, but not part of a champagne or recall.

I am terrified of the outcome...
