Speedo fault - Things to check?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The speedo on my Fabia Mk1 has recently started playing up. After an incredibly hot weekend 2 weeks ago, it didn't come on until it had been driven a few miles. It has been doing this ever since. Before it comes on, it goes all over the place, then settles at the correct speed. The fault is always back by the next day. I've unplugged and put back the cables at the dash and the ECU and given (what I think is) the sensor a shoogle, all to no avail. Having just spent a grand getting through an mot, I'd like to get to the bottom of it, or at least try before having to put it in a garage. Is there anything obvious I should be looking at? Bear in mind I'm an utter novice with cars.

I should also point out that the recent work involved new wiring to the steering pump/warning light, so there has been some fiddling about going on there. The problem surfaced around 2 weeks after the work however.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

what model is it? most of them take a speed from the abs sensors to run the dash but it could be caused by something else like the power steering pump wiring being a bit dodgy at a guess.

I would get it scanned for fault codes first.

It's a 1.9 TDi estate (2001). The power steering wiring was done just a couple of weeks ago along with a new pump so that sounds like a possible culprit. The thing is, I'm out in the sticks, 80 miles from the nearest skoda garage (who were a nightmare to deal with recently). Can I get the codes read by any garage, or does it need to be from a skoda garage?

I think most garages have access to code reading for the majority of vehicles, I've had codes read at independents before. However I've also paid £45 for a code read before so could be worth investing in your own reader for the future, it may save on costs long-term! (And give you an idea of the fault which you can search these forums for and hopefully save a bit of money!)
