Daytime running lights on or off

Featured Replies

I keep them on.

As for other countries, when I went to Phoenix we hired a VW Jetta, it didn't have a switch to activate headlights or sidelights, they were on all the time, I then drove my Dad's Passat when we got to Sedona and this was the same, lights on and no choice for the driver!!

Does it make a difference if they are on or off? Volvo always had side lights on in the 80's and still do!!

  • There seems to be a misconception that DRL's are for nighttime use?   They are for daytime visibility, and should be on. Light coloured cars and a slight mist are good camouflage. Driving safety dep

  • ON!! They are there for a reason, to increase your chance of being seen.   And with the newer cars I understand it is actually impossible to turn them off, as they are now a legal requirement.

  • Ah, the good old DRL debate.   We'll get used to them eventually, it's called progress, some people are still adverse to anything 'new'.   I remember the discussions when xenon headlights were fir

From my point of view re the daytime lights. I think that the real benefit is two fold, first you will probably see  the other vehicle sooner and second you know instantly that it is coming towards or away from you no matter how far it is away.

OFF

As per pinkpanther.

If it's dark enough to be seen by other road users, then it's dark enough for the driver to see other road users, so switch on your main lights.

I think you are on the wrong track, it's Daytime Running Lights being talked about, not driving in the dark.

Definitely always ON in my case.

On the Škoda Rapid there is a dedicated switch to switch the DRLs on or off BUT it is hidden behind a panel next to the fuses!!!

The above button is also utilised on the Fabia too, although I'd read on the Rapid forum recently that on the latest UK models the button had been removed.

Now I'm not sure if this is because they could be turned on/off using Maxidot instead (making the fuse box button redundant) or whether it was an effort by Skoda to stop customers being able to decide for themselves if they wanted them on or off...

I can turn on/off mine under the maxi dot menu (June 2013 - Spain), and on the manual said that could be turned on or off with a combination of turn signal switch.

Copy & Paste from the Manual:

Deactivating the daytime running lights
› Pull the turn signal light lever towards the steering wheel within 3 seconds of
switching on the ignition and at the same time, slide it downwards and hold it in
this position for at least 3 seconds.

Activating the daytime running lights
› Pull the turn signal light lever towards the steering wheel within 3 seconds of
switching on the ignition and at the same time, slide it upwards and hold it in
this position for at least 3 seconds.
On vehicles with an information display, the daytime running lights can also be
activated or deactivated via the menu:
? Settings
? Lights & Vision

I've modify via VCDS this setting:

Cent Elect - 09
Coding - 07
Long Coding Helper
Byte 26 - Bit 3 (Activate)

With this, DayLight only works on AutoLight mode. If you put on 0, then DRL will be off.

Turn them on, chill out and carry on!
