Is it worth having a Octavia 2 VRS diesel engine tune up?

Featured Replies

I'm toying with the idea of uprating the already pretty good 170 horses under the hood. Can anyone say whether this is worth doing? I'd be interested in hearing from those who have already had a chip upgrade done and if it is worth it, is there anywhere that can be recommended in the High Wycombe area to do a really good, warranted, professional and trustworthy job? or indeed if there are other ways easy and fairly cheap ways of increasing the power, by way of air filters, etc

I've heard they can easily go up to a good 210 HP after tune without any problems?

Not sure you mean chip upgrade!

These days it's usually either 'flash'' tuning via the OBD port, or an external box (eg Tunit).

Don't look at the headline figures, I'd consider the way the system works, where the torques is increased etc (never forget the same car can produce wildly varying figures depending on which rolling road it is tested!).

I have a vehicle with a Tunit box, which has given excellent power gains, but evn more impressive torque gains, and a vehicle that has been tuned via the OBD.

I think you'll find companies like AMD, Revo, Shark, or R-tech are well established (R-tech seems to be getting very good reviews recently), as are Tunit.

Personally, I'd look at whether they include a full diagnostic check, rolling road run and possibly live mapping, but you pays your money....

Thanks for that. I ended going to Revo for a remap as you'll probably be aware they're vag approved agents. Got a remap done for £399 (£100 off apparently). The car is up to a moderate 208 bhp now. Drives very nicely, not a pig to drive with the extra torque at all so shows its been done properly. Very quick from stand still now, infact I can only get the best of the pullaway using the dsg in manual mode, otherwise the car losses too much traction in full auto (traction control lights up like a Christmas tree, particularly in the wet!)

Cheers, Guy :)

Quick question.  If Revo are VAG approved, will this mean the warranty isn't affected?  £399 is a sweet price too.

"VAG approved agents" - utter rubbish.

Any remap has the potential for a warranty claim to be rejected if the remap is believed to have been a contributing factor. Even if a particular VW dealer acts as a REVO agent (not aware of any) then this does not protect you from warranty issues.

YES :D Remaps are always 'worth it'

I'd go for a DPF (Diesel PArticulate Filter) removal first.

You'll be amazed at much of a restriction on engine performance this can have.

Plus if the car is a keeper you'll more than likely have issues with it at some point in the future too.

Did Revo do any sort of tuning to your DSG box to cope with the sxtra torque or was the 399 just for the ECU remap ???

If the car is up to a moderate 208bhp now, what more might you get after a DPF removal?

What might you expect with just the DPF removal (pre remap)?

I spoke to a guy in crewe reckons with dpf removal plus a map he gets bout 220bhp and seen some upto 240bhp which sounds good to me bout all that power would a front wheel drive car really put up with that sort of power?

Stage 1 remap plus dpf removal won't give 240bhp; 215-220bhp is more realistic. Remember that there's a lot of optimistic rolling roads out there. My old stage 1 tsi only did about 240bhp but with ~315lbs torque it was pretty quick. Mine would sometimes struggle to put all the power down even with suspension mods but it was manageable. On a general point, remember that there's front wheel drive cars out there with 300+ bhp, e.g Focus RS, but these typically have clever LSDs. Personally I prefer 4wd to put my power down though.

Well worth a map, loads more responsive and powerful. Also, economical. I got 57mpg on a steady drive back from meadow hall on the m1 today.

I got mine done yesterday, it's great, pulls loads harder from lower revs, more torque.

I had dpf delete, egr delete and map all in one and the mapper thinks it'll be good for approx 240bhp. Will get it on a rolling road soon.

Get it on some reliable rollers and I promise you it will be nowhere near 240bhp. My old CR managed 204bhp with just the remap. DPF delete will not give another ~40bhp. Remap companies typically tell you what you want to hear although there are some honest ones out there.
