7 or 13 Pin Towing electrics

Featured Replies

Hi

I need to get a Towbar fitted to the Yeti and would like to know the difference between 7 or 13 pin electrics

I will only be towing a Motorcycle trailer so am I right to assume the 7 pin is adequate.

Thanks in advance

7 pin is perfectly adequate to tow your existing trailer, but to reach e approval all new trailers must now have 13 pin electrics, even though most pins on the plug are not connected to anything. So for that reason only, it's worth having 13 pin electrics as that will be more attractive to subsequent buyers, or if you change your trailer at some point.

A simple adaptor to convert from yout trailer's 7 pin plug to the car's 13 pin socket can be found on the internet for under a fiver (I paid 99p for mine, including delivery from Hong Kong!)

I only tow a motorcycle trailer or use a light board with a bike rack so I have got 7 pin plug/sockets.

The electrics that are installed in the car is for 13pin and the unused ones are just not connected up. You can change it to a 13 later if need be.

I tow a small trailer and went for 13 pin with an Ebay converter

Having just had to change a wheel and so uncover   the spare wheel and jack I found a 13 pin 7 pin adaptor sitting neatly in its slot with the jack !

So did it come with the dealer installed spare wheel kit or with the official towbar prep and towbar install ?

Of course I had already bought an adaptor  .

I much refer the new 13 pin socket.

It fixes much more securely than the old 7 pin and doesn't seem to have the same corrosion issues too.

I would go 13 pin every time when getting a trailer.

Here we have only the newer  13 pin socket installed, the older 7 pin trailers can be connected with the adaptor.

Well thanks for all the reply`s it seems  its the 13 pin is the most common choice. I will have to scour ebay for a 7-13 pin  adapter

Once again thanks to you all for your comments/advice

My offical skoda tow bar kit I got and fitted to my yeti had the plug and play 13 pin electrics on it but I just use a convertor to downgrade to 7 pin so it works with my trailers.

Personally I would change the plug on the trailer for a 13 pin one. You will have a lot fewer problems.

The 13pin connector is a far better design with less likelihood of intermittent connections.

Also, as it's a twist fit connector, it is less likely to fall out!

There's no comparison really, go 13pin!

Agreed!!

I've now been using 13 pin plugs for 3 years and other than a quick spray with some silicone grease at the end of each season I haven't had to do any care of them, compared to having to fiddle with the old 7 pins ones every spring because at least one of the lights on the 'van didn't work.

13 pin sockets are now part of the MOT test while 7 pin sockets are not.

Yes as a caravan owner I can tell you that the 13 pin system is far superior.
