Sounds like your not very keen on it then   I've seen this car in the Flesh and I can tell you it's one of the best modded Vrs's around.   Prime example of what can be done.............Properly

  • I have considered it. If I was single, I'd keep it even though I don't need a diesel what with getting the train full time now.   I do love this car and I'd love to get some more benefit out of some

So here's a question. If not a B8 A4 2.0 TFSI, what else could we replace the Octavia with?

She doesn't really want a Skoda. I've had two in a row now so I'm happy enough to get something different just for variety, despite them both having been brilliant.

We want something reasonably economical, but diesels aren't appropriate because of her usage - lot's of short journeys and overall we'll definitely be under 10,000 a year.

Something that looks reasonable and isn't too depressing.

Something reasonably nice to drive.

Something that's a reasonable size for going on trips and holidays in, but not so big that my wife won't like driving it locally.

Nothing rear wheel drive because of where we live and what it's like in winter.

I also kind of like VAG stuff because I understand it to a reasonable degree and there's a good ecosystem around them and tools like VCDS.

Oh and here's the kicker - nothing too low or with too long overhangs because of the awkward entry into our drive! I'm having to discount A4s with S-Line suspension for this reason annoyingly.

Volvo V50 T5?

VW touareg

V50 T5 and Toureg both too thirsty. Toureg a bit big for her too I think.

Petrol, eh?

My slightly bonkers choices would be a first generation Audi RS6 Estate (I would love to be able to justify getting one one day) or a big engined Subaru Legacy Tourer or previous generation Outback (the nice looking one)

More realistic might by a SEAT Exeo ST (if your good lady can live with badge?) as it keeps it VAG. If a hatch would do it then you wouldn't go wrong with a Mk5 Golf GTi or newer.

Alfa 159 for car Nut points? As long as it could negotiate your drive?

I did look at the Scooby's actually. I do kind of like the Outbacks. Only trouble is I've heard that 2.5 petrol isn't as reliable as the 2.0s you use to get in the Imprezas.

I can't really get on board with an Exeo. They're INCREDIBLY rare in a petrol - just look at Autotrader, it's mental. Also, just get a B7 A4 and don't have to look at a Seat badge or those crap door mirrors Seat grafted on.

159? I can see the appeal but I don't see it passing the driveway challenge. Also I'm not enamoured with the build quality.

Lot of car for the money...  ;)

Oops it's RWD.

well if you start taking bits off the skoda or dont fancy a PX + cash for my standard VRS i could be interested in a few bits and pieces for mine :)

Yeah, thanks for the offer on the trade in, but it's not really what I'm looking to achieve. I'll keep you posted on the parts front from mine though.

Hey Nick, shame you're thinking of selling up but can understand your logic and reasoning,

I think the proposed spec you listed earlier strikes a good balance. Like you say, it's just not viable trying to remove the diff and other mods that are pretty integral.

For the new motor, I guess it comes down to budget? If it's not a Skoda then B8 would be where I'd look if it were me. And 1.8 TSi if diesel wasn't required.

Glad I got to see it properly in the flesh while its still in your ownership anyway. It's a credit to you.

Cheers,

Steve

This is sad news. I always looked to this vRS to see what I could/would do if funds would allow. Its a shame for it to be broken so to speak but thank you for creating such an inspirational vRS.

Sorry to see your selling up,epic car and if I had the funds to buy it I'd take it exactly as it is and wouldn't be put off by any of the mods done to it as its been done right, maintained properly and been well looked after, glws and hope you find a replacement that ticks all the right boxes :)

It's a shame to see you selling Nick but priorites change and your reasoning is well considered and to be respected. It's a lovely car but you never get the return on investment, that's the problem with modified cars, so your approch of removing numerous parts to sell separately makes good sense. I saw your car at Inters this year but didn't see you for a catch up which was a shame. Noticed you still hadn't fitted the rear blind!

As suggested above you can't go wrong with a Golf GTi, perhaps a later mk5 5 door? It really depends on how much boot space you need but remember the A4's aren't that much bigger. We manage perfectly well with the Golf (two small children!) even with the reduced boot size of the R.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide and keep us informed.

Such a helpful thing to say! Sometimes its best to keep pointless negative comments to yourself.

Have seen Nicks motor in the flesh (at many a show) and can vouch for its immaculate condition.(I dont know Nick personally).

Good luck on the sale Im sure it will attract a buyer soon!

I thought the comments from whitep were totally fair and reasonable.

Briskoda is full of enthusiasts and so will understand and appreciate what nickp has done to his car.

The vast majority of cars on the road do not have mods. How do you explain mods to these people? They probably have no interest in it and see it as a major headache - rightly or wrongly - both in terms of warranty/servicing and insurance.

Modding is a bit marmite I think - the vast majority of motorists are not going to understand or like it. You will not be able to maximise your sales price - and how do you value a car like this?

As a vrs driver I look for something as standard as possible but can appreciate the hard work and investment that has clearly gone into this car.

Cheers.

The car isn't in warranty, so there is no impact there. The EGR delete, dpf removal and single mass clutch flywheel and uprated clutch which are staying on the car only make the car more reliable, removing common modern diesel weak points. They make no difference to the servicing. The insurance with the full list of mods on the front page comes in within £50 of the very cheapest quote for a standard car for me.

Well, I've sat in a B8 S4 before and quite liked it. On the way back from getting some new tyres on the Corsa today I called in at the Audi dealership to try a B8 A4. Not impressed. The seats in the S-Line just don't suit me at all. They couldn't find the time to let me try an SE so I left, but looking at the SE, it looks so ungainly compared to the S-Line. And they really are quite tight on space. And the pedal offset on the manual is insane. I think I've cooled on the idea.

I'm now off on a Yeti 1.8TSI tack. I might go and look at http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305096683189/sort/default/usedcars/engine-size-cars/1-7l_to_1-9l/model/yeti/make/skoda/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/60/page/1/postcode/s174hu?logcode=p tomorrow. It's only an SE but that means it's got cruise, parking sensors and climate control. And this ones got Bluetooth. I guess I'll kind of miss auto-dipping mirror and xenons but I need to be flexible.

I could probably chop the Corsa in against that + 10k cash. Then prep the Octavia for sale.

dont suppose you have a video on tick over with the SMF on do you :)

Shame its lowered, I avoid lowered cars at all costs.

Damaged underside of the car, damages sump, damaged under engine covers, scrubbed out tyres, geometry all out after car manufacturers spend millions calculating it, CV joint failiure, wheel bearing faliure, damaged exhausts... You are 32 man, doing that to a car is what a 17 year old does! (risking backlash now, fingers in ears) Other than that, gorgeous car and I like the rest of the spec, bar EGR delete, imminent MOT fail. L&K bits deffo ggod choice.

Have you ever applied to go on 'Pointless'?

You are clearly not interested in the car, so why bother posting on the thread?

Nick is probably one of the most sensible people you could wish to meet, so to accuse him effectively of being immature shows your complete and utter naivety

For what it's worth, the car is an absolute belter, and has been looked after probably better than any other on here
