Flash and Crash for Cash.... New scam

Featured Replies

Yup, the devious b*******s have found a new way to get money out of your insurance company.

If you are waiting to turn right out of a side road they'll flash to let you out then just drive into the side of you.

They'll plan it so there are no witnesses, the insurance companies will deem it your fault and the usual claim for damages and injury starts.

We should all know that flashing of headlights means I am here, but there are too many drivers who assume it will be safe to pull out.

Don't be one of them please.

Hmmm. Not something a dashcam can really help with either. They can also presumably do this by either just slowing down, then accelerating into you or indicating to turn left so you think you have time. Re the latter, I always wait until they actually have started turning as you get numpties who leave their indicators on, or legitimately change their mind at the last moment.

Easy thing to do is turn dash cam before turning out ? If he's scamming he will flash again to let you " out" but it should be caught on camera ? And I'm pretty sure if you done go all the way forward to junction it will be caught on camera . This scam is due mainly because more and more people are using dashcams eventually dashcams will have 360* filming

Not really practical to adjust the camera at every junction :(

360 recording would do it, but it would make your car look a bit like the google cars :) Plus you would have, what, 4 cameras to steal.

All that I guess can be done is more vigilance and patience. If there's one car coming on an otherwise empty road, I normally let it pass anyway.

Yep - I had an extremely close call once where somebody had indicated that they were turning so I (wrongly) assumed it would be safe for me to go, turned out they were basically incompetent in the operation of their indicators and had no intention of turning.

No accident, but it taught me a lesson - never assume anything!

The Headlines today are 'Flash for Cash',

& not the already widely used term 'Crash for Cash',

Yes George, but when I posted this it had not been given its new title.

Just for you, I've edited the title :)

Anyway, I thought flash for cash could only be found in seedy peep shows.

Thats been happening for years!

Well, I've been flashing for ages and no one has given me any cash  :(

You shouldn't rely on people flashing you.

It's in the highway code.
